Default July S.C.A.T. Battle Day

Attention all Southern California (and adjacent region) tankers;

The next battleday is coming up soon - Saturday, July 19th. Due to fact it could be hot enough to MELT you tank at noon, this will be an evening battle.

Here is the message from the CO himself

"Let’s plan on starting at 3:00 pm. We can take our time setting up. We will start around 5:00 pm or 6:00 pm and battle till 10:00 pm. I have plenty of lights. If some want to arrive earlier and help more with the field or just mess with tank stuff that’s cool too!"

Even though this is a night battle, you might want to bring some shade for set-up. Don't forget all you other hot weather gear.

For the guys from AZ, treat it like a ordinary Spring day.

That is all.

Thanks SCAT!

Alright, I have something to combat the half tracks, testing went well and the Howitzer will be ready to go for the Military Day this Friday at Crusin Grand! And of course this will make a good bridge guard for one of Darins Bridges at SCAT on the 19th!

See you there!

The July battle day was a great success! We had over 30 people attend, with about 25 tank drives! The kickoff battle was 8 Allies vs 8 Axis. Any more drivers and we are going to need a bigger field!

There were a couple of close battles, and a few blowouts, but no one side dominated the day.

There were so many flashes going off when it got dark, I am sure you will be seeing a lot more picts

Check out the S.C.A.T. website in the coming days for more picts.

A huge Thanks to Steve, Kevin, and all of SCAT for a much needed fun day and night! Especially a Big Thanks to Steve’s wife for the excellent BBQ chicken dinner, and yes I went back for seconds on the potato salad, don’t tell my wife,,,!

Man the battle day/night was filled with ups and downs and a lot of great team work!
My King Tiger faired well probably the best I have battled with it yet and in one Battle Merle and I teamed up and lasted towards the end!
The Pershing did great in its first ever battle, Soulfly with his Heng Long Pershing and me teamed up to cut right through the middle of the battle field and it was getting dark by this time and that, plus the trees helped for cover! I have to give a lot of props to Soulfly! As a lot of you battlers know it is not easy to cover another tank that is about 5 feet in front of you because you risk hitting them with your own shots, so I was very impressed by how well he did! He allowed me to advance all the way to the edge of the river by protecting my flank! And because of that I got at least one kill in that round my first with my Pershing, and it really put the hurt on a few others!

Ok now for the Humbling part, so coming off that great showing, I decide to take the whole southern village & bridge protection by myself in the next battle! The battle starts I drift further away from the rest of the team I am snipping across the river keeping them from the Bridge when all of the sudden this Panther or Jagpanther being controlled by Alex Tailend Charlie’s son just came bonzi into the village and I got a shot on him he shot me but he was already so close and you know how when your off rhythm and he was just moving so unorthodox he had the upper hand at that point and he Blitzed the Blitz I think I got four shots on him and he wasted me,,, []

So seeing first hand that the Allies needed some stopping power I broke out the 105 mm Howitzer and boy did it make an impressive debut! A new tanker, who was from Merle’s Marauders, maybe his son’s wife/ friend not sure? Alice took control of the Howitzer, we placed it so the IR sensor was behind the corner of the house but the gun could still cover the road and the bride. The Axis team had a strange strategy and maybe they can elaborate on this,,, but I think they thought they would rush the Gun,,? [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]Aah, 2 tanks killed later they finally got around to the side of the gun and took it out! The Howitzer ended up with at least 3 confirmed kills in as many battles, I think everyone liked the addition to the battlefield and it actually did change some strategy and encouraged teamwork for the opposition[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

DAK once again came and experienced the joys and pains of battle in SoCal. Our 400 mile line of communication was tested by including a baseball game, (Angels v Red Sox) and the ever present price of gas. Good thing everything went smoothly and the day was a blast.

SoCal was also 20 degrees cooler!

Blitz,

At one point the 105mm was taken out by some well placed long range shots from Ferdinand(me), of course this after having taken several hits from the 105.
Ferdinand and the Night Jagdpanther made a good showing along with my KT.
The new Flakwagon however completly destroyed the Track drive gearboxes and was not able to be deployed.
New gear boxes have been located and it should be back in service by the next engagement.

All n all was a lot of fun, thanks to the DAK guys for making the trip and to everyone else who attended.

Regards,

bullyhys

We had a great time. Special thanks to SCATPATTON who hosted the event and to his wife and extended family for the wonderful home cooking. Extra special was the home made lemon cake dessert mmm mmm! But I digress, we did some serious battling too.

I battled my Jagdpanther and King Tiger. My wife battled her Tiger. Her Tiger worked great like always and she gave as good as she got. My story was different. I'll explain.

For all but one battle, I used my Jagdpanther. My JP was working fine, and found the open terrain of the town to its liking. I'm battling it more now, and finding the lack of a turret to not be much of a handicap anymore. Takes a bit of practice though. Apart from a suicide charge up the hill where I was summarily taken out by a Pershing, Sherman and a Firefly, it gave a good accounting of itself. I must say that the dragon's teeth work just like they are supposed to. My JP got high centered on one in the darkness and was stranded as a sitting duck. Ugh.

In the one battle I didn't use the JP, the King tiger fared worse. (This is starting to be a bad luck tank in California. In Arizona, it is a tough opponent, but in Cali, ugh.) Two battledays ago, it kept getting blown up quick. I thought it was just me, but after about 4 battles and every time I was the first tank out, I got suspicious. Seems I had been tinkering inside, and had inadvertently turned the dip switches to the "light tank" setting. I was getting put out at 3 hits, when it should have been 9. Doh!

Fast forward to this last battleday and it gets even worse (if you can imagine). I had once again been tinkering inside prior to battleday, and had neglected to plug in the recoil and emitter after removing them from the DMD. Well, lets just say after some shots that should have been dead bangs, I resolved myself to the fact that my tank didn't shoot an IR beam (although it took hits just fine). Talk about being insignificant. My biggest contribution in the battle was to park in a place where my wreck could cover my team. After that battle, I switched out to the JP. I discovered the problem with the KT the next day. Doh!

So here are the lessons I learned. Always test your tanks prior to battle. Make sure that they can hit, and be hit, and take the correct number of hits. Don't run over dragon's teeth. For the vast majority who do this, it is my earnest endeavour to join you on the next field of battle.

I can add to the lesson by relaying the troubles of my Firefly. I am proud of the home made emitter I managed to construct and locate in the super long 17pdr barrel but I really must make sure I secure it in place. It retreated about halfway down the gun tube and make the first battle a bust. Once I secured it in place, game on! I was confused at first though because it was able to shoot close range and on the bench.

ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GEAR WELL IN ADVANCE! Right Squid?

Status Report:

Loaded up the Jadgpanther & Panther, both to be tested in battle for the first time on Saturday, but was intercepted by the CO, returning early from the gym. As I was hunting for a folding chair, I was given countermanding orders to attend & drive my wife to nephew Stewart's 7th birthday party in West LA.
