Default Happy with the Tamiya Sherman M4(105) HVSS

Build update: And I am pretty pleased with the Tamiya M-26 Pershing too. Really considered grafting a Mato Sherman suspension onto the Tamiya Sherman hull, but my almost stock Sherman project has been so much fun to build and runs so well, I decided to pass on the Mato road wheel conversion.

I haven't paid much attention to US Army Armor in the ETO, and not that I have left the big cats behind, but these two are very fine kits built either stock (my Pershing) or with a few aftermarket parts (my Sherman).

I will sit down and weather them after the holiday season. The quartermaster corp does not want the sight of any toy tanks in her camp during this time period. LOL

They look great John!

The HVSS suspension is a better runner then the older VVSS, however it doesn't really historically represent the Sherman variants that fought all throughout the war. The big hatch HVSS models first saw combat in the ETO during December '44. That means they saw combat for about 6 months versus the VVSS Shermans first battles in North Africa in 1942.

John,
I've never been a big fan of US armor, I've always thought the German stuff looked tougher and meaner (which they were). And like you I haven't paid much attention or even cared much about the currently available Allied tanks in 1/16th scale. I too am working on my first Sherman (Tamiya) and have thoroughly enjoyed it thus far, although it is far from stock.

As always your work is amazing, and your figures are outstanding. I particularly like the color and markings on the Sherman. I'm anxious to see how they turn out once the holidays have passed. Please make sure to post pictures.

And maybe, just maybe 2010 will be the year that we both finally show up at the same SCAT battle day, and I can finally put a face to pcomm1, and marvel at your tanks for real!
One can always hope - great work!

kindest regards,

Craig

Thank you all for the positive words, I never know what to do with OD.

For 2010 I should be able to make many SCAT Events, as the company I work for, like most everywhere else has cut my hours (no time and 1/2+ weekends & furloughs) and I would enjoy meeting and getting to know all the vaunted DAK & SCAT members. Plus SCAT Kevin emailed me stating that even if on his team, he will nail my tank (either Allied or Axis) with fratricide and I do need to try and deal with that, sooner or later, hence the A-26 Banshee Kamikaze gas engined free flight diver bomber not so secret weapon. LOL.

swathdiver, I hope Santa Wife puts a Mato Sherman under the tree, if not I'll just buy one from Phil. I will refine it, hopefully, as well as you and YHR and others have done, detail and paint it but pretty much leave the running gear stock (for now) and enjoy it as is and try not to put any ones eye out with it.

And I wonder just how hard it is to fly into Russia with my TBU Kursk Tiger IE, HAL_HUSKER? Would that not be amazing to run your tanks in Russia.

My compliments John, they look really good. Not a big fan of US tanks but these are two good examples.

Kevin, that hurts, I thought everyone loves surly, sardonic folk.
Anyway, I can't take point, my naps would get in the way, plus I would forget why I was there in the first place.
Point is a job for the young & dumb, so their is a bunch of better choices around.
And thank you Perry and no worry, I also like the really bad guys armor best.

Kindest Regards, John

I will echo the thougthts of many...your figures and tanks are awesome. One thought however. Make sure you lash down those ammo cans on your Pershing before they fall off.

OK, John, now that you made the offer, Hal can give you visa support, to wit, the invitation. Then contact Embasssy in DC for the visa form, you can actually download it from net. Why don't you plan on coming the Kubinka Meet next summer? Should be no problem to fly with the tank, just no batteries in it. Be sure it will be inspected though!
If you can make it to Kubinka, you will also get the meet the current rabble rouser, IOW me, and my charming VCO. Lord willin' and the creek don't rise we'll be in Mockba for the meet.

Hmmmmm. Mayhap I can speak to the Priest at Church of Foros to intercede on your behalf. He did pretty good for us when we decided to marry there. Would be nice to have you at the meet. And you will get to see Kubinka Museum. Might even take you to Bolshoi, if we can clean you up and stand you on your hind legs for a couple hours/

No hope in cleaning me up, since I got involved with the rc tank hobby (but the TC is well dressed and looking sharp).

While I am awaiting Divine Intervention to book me a trip to Russia to fight rc tanks, I packed up the Pz4. It is small, should travel well and will be less of a threat to the Eastern Front Allies.

TC does look quite sharp! Nice job on him. Me, I can't even see to paint the small details on him, let alone keep my hands from shaking long enough to do so.
We are working on the Divine Entervention for you.

You know those stupid looking magnification goggles some jewelers wear, well not me, I go over to the local college and use their electron microscope. Also it is just my left middle finger that so far trembles, which means I have to chase whatever I am holding with the brush.

And look at what I found:

Hmmmm. My middle fingers are the only ones that DON"T shake and tremble. But maybe that's because I'm way younger than you. Which seriously I doubt.

Wait a minute, it is the finger immediately to the right of the middle finger that shakes, guess I need glasses. And everyone over 40 is old, so most are in the same boat or soon will be.

Hey I've always said age is a state of mind. I'm 41 but many mornings I feel 65. My body does a fine job or reminding me just how unkind I have been to it over the years, it seems like every injury is talking back to me now, they like to let me know when it's gonna rain.

collegiate sports, 400,000+ miles of motorcycle riding (including racing both on off road and road bikes), 4 pretty nasty accidents, 5 ankle fractures, cadaver replacement parts in the knee, spinal surgery.........................................we ll you get the picture.

But hey I can keep my hands pretty steady while I'm painting details, well as long as I'm bouncing my foot. Weird the fingers will shake a tad until I bounce my foot a little and the hand becomes steady as a rock. And I think my figures are passable! (LOL)

Your figure work is clearly superb and some of the best around. I am working on a kraut today, had to cut the poor dudes limbs off so he'd fit in a cupola and my real fingers are rock steady, but today it is the left eye that is pulsating like an insane badger.

One of the nephews is a writer and road test dummie for Cycle World and is routinely having major stuff reinstalled on the company dime. So I hope you have moved on from bikes, not that I didn't ride on the street years ago, everyday, for 2 decades starting with what else a Triumph 650, then a wicked Norton and lastly a BMW sport bike. Always wanted a Harley...maybe if I sell all the rc tanks and the wife's car.... Better not.

John,
Thank you for the kind compliment, I do a lot of 1/35th scale armor and figures and believe it or not I actually have better success with the smaller scale. The faces, especially in resin, seem to be a lot better sculpted (so you have more to work with) than the mass produced injection molded figures that come with these 1/16th scale tanks. Even a lot of the new Dragon Gen 2 figures, which use slide molding have a lot better detail and realistic poses and expression in 1/35th.

I too tossed in the Arai helmet and Alpine Star Boots about 2 years ago, but I do miss it, and it's worse on some days. I started racing off-road 3-wheelers back in 1986, but after the repairs became more and more costly and the injuries seem to keep intensifying (suffice to say young and dumb) I switched to road racing FZR 400, then went onto 600's, vintage, and finally 750 Super Sport.

In 2006, while at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey I had a 16 year old kid hit me in the back of my shoulder mid corner at about 90mph+. After the time session I found the kid in the pits, he and his dad's response to my inquiry about his aggressive riding style was "Hey if you're to old get off the track", so I did. But I have logged over 400 thousand miles all on sport bikes, so I figured I had pressed my luck far enough.

Regards,
Craig

Thanks Duca,
All of the TC's in my pics are the stock ones that come with a variety of Tamiya FO kits. The only exception is the DAK officers, both of them came from the infamous "K" sprue from the the Tamiya static version of the Tiger I which is no longer available.
