Hi Guys,
I'm aways looking to buy and sell some tanks to support my very exensive and highly addictive hobby. I have a dear friend of mine, Bill Gasseer, who is really "big" (every pun intended) into collecting the large scale tanks. You know the 1/1 scale. While I do take pride in my Ebay offerings ( I have a nice M26 listed on Ebay now) this guy in Germany has got me beat hands down......LOL. Es ist wunderbar nicht war!

Interesting and pound for pound (or kg for kg) at the current bid of $21,000 or so, much cheaper than an HL KV-1. The T-55 is about 36,000 kg combat weight which is about $1.70 per kg or perhaps 80 cents per pound whereas the KV-1 is about 2 kg and $90 or so. That's around $13 a pound. Mind you, it's pretty easy to get free shipping with the KV-1. Might be more of a problem with the T-55.

Interesting and once the shipping, customs, BATF etc got through, you'd have a mess getting it anywhere. It has steel combat tracks and you'd be hard pressed to get to run it anywhere, outside of your own back yard. Transport would have to be on a construction flatbed, which means you need to buy/rent a tractor and fitting trailer. I had this problem a few years ago and mine only weighed 16 tons. Truck and trailer cost more than the tank and was always a hassle on the open road. Constant argument with city officials about parades etc unless you get a special permit. Parts would not be a problem, other then shipping from Europe, but the T-55 uses a shotgun shell to start the engine and it is a very problematic system. They are really great driving and handle nice with pretty good speed, but......where? [:-]

HAD..past tense. Sold it and got an M-29 Weasel, sold it and restored a Dodge WC-51. Tracked vehicles are great except when you have to pay for everything, including transport etc.

A few years ago they were selling Chieftains at give-away prices in UK. Don't know who'd want one those huge, smoky beasts but transport cost would have been impossible. It would be one helluva front lawn ornament.

It looks like a bargain compared to some of the cars that were auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson here this month. Plus, think of the tax credits you'd get for buying a GREEN vehicle!

Hmm, is the government of the United States prepared to prevent say, a wealthy maniac from purchasing this T-55, or something like it....and doing things to it.. Getting it ready.. Preparing for his final assault.. Tank Driver.. Soon he could be getting ready, in a city near you!

I don't know what the reserve price was BB, but after looking over my finances my bid for $20,200 was my great shot at the glory of tank ownership.... I drove a APC at Manassas in November. I guess I'll have to happy with that for now and stick to the 1/16 tanks. Oh well...... If I had won I would have been forced to sell my 1963 Impala S S 409.
Maybe I'll get another chance to command the Patton tank in Danville again. At least I can say I bid o it so I'll cross that one off the "bucket list". Bob

That's not a bad price. A decent Sherman can run $35-50m, basket case for about $20m. Some guy has an M-47 up for $101M and a while ago a pristine M-41 was on the block for $95+M. Ferrets went for about $12m a dozen years ago, but like Fox ACs, they are now up in $18-20M range.. I've always wanted a Saladin....my all time favorite driving AC....but the maintenance problems are over whelming unless you have a heavy duty workshop. Wheeled vehicles and half tracks aren't bad. I got my WC-51 for $7.5M, rebuilt/improved it, drove it for 6 yrs and sold it for $15m. Interested in military vehicles you can drive....check MVPA website. track vehicles come with a hefty shipping./transport cost, but for delivery and general running cost. That's why millionaires Kromky, Littlefield and those guys on ther island by UK have all the good stuff.

The scrapyard where my cousin used to work(Hampton's in Stoke-on-Trent,UK)had a load of Cheiftains.
They sold 'em to the prop companies for film work and to the "Drive-a-tank" experience days firms.
Except for one MkV which the Hampton brothers kept for themselves and now have on display just inside the main gates.

He reckoned that it was great fun to drive(when they had to move it around the yard)and with it's multi-fuel engine,
would run on any kind of oil/diesel/paraffin/petrol that was available.
It used to let go with a huge cloud of smoke when it started up.

Just before he retired a couple of years ago,my cousin reckoned they'd already had a few early Challies in
and sold those on too.
They've had loads of ex-Army trucks,APC's,armoured cars,Stalwarts and tanks in over the years and sell loads of
'em on to various companies.

Man, I'd love to have a Saladin,. Used to drive them in Germany with the 2 QDG and really loved how they handled. Kinda scary going around a corner at first, as the center wheels also steered, which gave you a slight sidewards feeling. Here's a poor shot of me the QDG at Fallingbostel Lager in Germany, getting ready top go out for a spin back in 1963. Had a chance to buy one, but was cautioned about the severe problems with wheel boxes.

Hmmm, got me to thinking, I wonder if a full scale reproduction tank would sell. Insides metal with fairly easy obtainable gas or disel engine, metal frame, and fiberglass body. Just enough to give you the experience but not the weight issues. May do some research and see if a market exist out there in tank land

But, I bet the 1/16 drivers might get a little upset when you flatten their armor.

Thats an interesting link on how to build a tiger tank. But, what I had more in mind of was to build a drivable tank with the "looks" of a real tank but not the "real" thing A fiberglass reprsentation of the real thing but not functional. Fiberglass shell around a working tracked drive. If you need to hear a boom from the gun, load a tube with baby powder and blow it out with compressed air LOL. I was thinking more like doing parades and stuff. Im sure an even director would be more willing to allow a "Fake" tank to participate. It was just a thought.
