Russia didn't get much into VTRs. For the most part, they took a damaged tank.,removed the turret and closed up the hole, added a couple tow cables and heavy tools, and that was it. Lend Lease program gave them some M-31s during early WW II. Some T-34's in the mid fifties were modified to retrievers but now they have vehicles specially designed at VTRs.

Stalin's philosophy would support this as his attitude was they (tanks) go out but do not need to come back.

Case in point, the T35 had issues with mobility and how to recover, but his attitude was is just needed to get to the enemy to engage (fight to the death usually as a pillbox).

With all respect but it is partly correct...

this

1)

this type was done even in 1940, before ww2 +

2)

This is KV-T

3) Bridge-Loader
T-28 as the base (1940)

Thanks Hal,

The photos of the T-34 and KV pretty much agree with what I wrote re; using an older/damaged tank chassis as a VTR. I have seen a few photos of KV/JS II chassis and saw one from the train to Berlin in 1962, towing a JSU-152, used for retrievers and of course what we learned in the Army. Only T-34 retriever I ever saw was at Bovington in 1992. Not much info out here on those vehicles. It would be nice if you could post some info and photos for us.
