T-34 Recoil and Elevation Mods

1 Attachment(s)
I pulled the old T-34 down off the shelf and decided to do a major rebuild.

First thing I did was gut the turret and build a servo recoil and elevation into it. Everything is built with Styrene and some Lego( gotta love lego). This is a very low profile set up and a design I will adopt going forward. I utilized styrene I beam and a traveling slide block to ensure a smooth mechanism. It works well.

I am going to be using the DBC3 and Benedini for sound. With the discovery of the Hobby King T6a and its proportional control knobs on channel 5 and 6 it is easy to add this servo elevation, and have independant control of the cannon elevation. With a Benedini I can assign the gun elevation sounds to this channel so I will have sound to match.

Also, now that I have discovered the Benedini can provide a trigger signal to the recoil that only fires when the IR shot is ready I have elimated all false cannon recoils.

As much as I love to see all the machined metal parts, I have not got my workshop set up, nor have the talent to work in metal like some do. Instead I make use of Styrene. However some good things can be done with Styrene, and the material is very easy to use. A sharp knife, a cutting board, and a steel ruler is all you need to build some sturdy stuff that works good in 1/16 scale.

The I beam was added to stiffen up the Sytrene card, Once I placed it though I realized it would be great to use as a guide for a Styrene Travelling Block.

So here is the turret mechanical done.

i like this YHR looks good mine has a chopped up HL recoil in it and i mean chopped up...lol it elevates crappy and it is loud when it recoils i may have to try your idea do you have a video of it in action yet
Thanks for Sharing this

I haven't got video yet. I used a 68 ohm resistor on the return circuit so the recoil is slower to return then it does to retract.

I will have video and some sound files to share sometime this Christmas.

I rebuilt my Metal Sherman and added a Ford V8 sound set. SO I have that, and then this is going to get a Russian Diesel sound set as well

The turret rotation mechanism is extremely loud on these WSN tanks. I might try and replace that before I am done as well.

I had some more pictures but can't seem to load any onto the server.

Here is a video of the tank.

I worked some more on the T-34. Reorganized the layout in side and added my new found favorite speaker,(Small in size housed in case that delivers sound on par to the Visaton).

Of course the Benedini and DBC3, and this time I actually mounted them on precut plywood pieces I found at Micheals. They truly are boards now.

how did you control the elevation speed?

RE: T-34 Recoil and Elevation Mods

The elevation is servo controlled it will move as slow or as fast as you move the control
