HL Sherman
I know a lot of people have been disappointed with this release due to the running gear so here's mine running Mato metal wheels/sprockets/idlers and t-49 tracks.
There was a lot of modification to get this to work but I think it was worth it:D http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/...pscbade57b.jpg it also could run std Mato tracks;) http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2a206f2b.jpg |
RE: HL Sherman
So where did you get it from?
As soon as my tracks show up it will be Sherman time. :D ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
I'm lucky, I'm in the uk and Dave/forgebear has them.
|
RE: HL Sherman
Nice... I need to get a few more. :)
~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
Bloody hell Jeff you're soon going to have to move to a bigger house:)
|
RE: HL Sherman
Nah, I'm already moving some stuff on to those who will build them.
~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
|
RE: HL Sherman
Will you add some more details? What changes and parts do the standard mato tracks need to work on the heng long sherman?
|
RE: HL Sherman
Oh, thanks for reminding me! I sometimes need a swift kick to my head to remember things. :D
They (Hobby Raw) have a loooot of nice RC Tank goodies, more than I thought they did. I even bookmarked the Jagdtiger in hopes I'll be in the mood to make the corrections that thing needs. AND, their prices are very tempting!! [X(] Has anyone ordered from them? How is their turnaround time? ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
Well, I have issues with those tracks as the 'duckbill' extensions are supposed to 'slide' over the end connectors and then bolt on. They look like they put the duckbill extensions right next to the present end connector, making them appear too long.

RE: HL Sherman
1 Attachment(s)
These look the same but different....
|
RE: HL Sherman
I realize that and that there are some difference in styles of duckbills, but the MATO representation is not correct as the end connector with the guidehorn needs to be shortened as they do stick out too far.
The duckbill needs to be right next to the tack. ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
Ok, that makes sense. So are you thinking about grinding them or cutting them off?
|
RE: HL Sherman
I'll know more after UPS drops them off tonight. :D
~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
ORIGINAL: MAUS45 Ok, that makes sense. So are you thinking about grinding them or cutting them off? So, after they have just been dropped off... the end connector on the 'duckbill' side needs to be eliminated and the opposing connector needs to be the same thickness as the 'duckbill' end is. But, we shall see. This all depends on pin diameter and for gawds sake, no problems with the pitch. :D My Dad was a TV repairman and had this awesome set of tools so I think I'm set. ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
Gentlemen: Can anyone explain "if" the Mato metal drive sprockets, rollers and the entire suspension system is compatible with the HL Sherman design? Meaning would it be practical to buy the cheapest plastic version of the HL Sherman and then install the Mato metal drive components?

ORIGINAL: Panzerpaul Gentlemen: Can anyone explain ''if'' the Mato metal drive sprockets, rollers and the entire suspension system is compatible with the HL Sherman design? Meaning would it be practical to buy the cheapest plastic version of the HL Sherman and then install the Mato metal drive components? I bought the whole metal suspesion, but only used the wheels. I drilled the axle holes out to 6mm the suit the HL bogies. The rear idler mount has to be shortened to align the idler to the wheels. The gearbox output shaft has to shortened by around 5.5mm to get the sprockets to align. |
RE: HL Sherman
On the 'duckbills'... it appears what I will do is use them on the MATO tracks (for the JUMBO), trimming the outer end connector with the guide horn, a longer pin and possibly a sleeve inside the 'duckbill' or just JB Weld it.
The T-49 tracks will then be used on another Sherman, most likely the early M4A3. Thanks for letting me hi-jack you thread for a minute. :D ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
From experience because I have done this mod and helped a person do it. The duck bills will be too short by about 1" or so, Hope you have extra tracks, if not I have extra lengths of them in a week when I go pick em up.
The shaft hole on the mato wheels needs to be cleaned up as it is very tight on the HL drive shaft, if you don't the wheel won't go on. The reaer idler has a sizing issue. there are smaller issues but those are the big ones. RE: HL Sherman
Confused.........Didn't the Mato sprockets sit too far away from the chassis and nowhere in line with the wheels when you did this? The HL and Mato sprockets have a very different offset.
|
RE: HL Sherman
Well, I have no answers for that as I haven't got that far but I will end up using whatever the tracks work the best with and go from there.
So, I might end up needing a gearbox if the HL axles doesn't work with the Mato sprockets. Then there will be the relocation of bolting the box to the lower chassis. All will be worked out this weekend... even during this light snow storm we're getting if I need supplies. The CR-V had NO trouble handling the snow as we went out tonight to Applebees. :D Pictures later. ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
Got a little more done. Added a cast effect to the turret and tranny cover and replaced all the moulded on handles with scratched ones:D

RE: HL Sherman
I used Waltersons gearboxes and not the standards, the waltersosn have a slight taper and they are slightly different but as you said fyn not impossible.

RE: HL Sherman
My M4 is one the way....
|
RE: HL Sherman
That is looking good Frank. HL should pay you. As you progress on this the better and better it looks.
|
RE: HL Sherman
Yep, never cease to impress me with your work Frank.
It's Sherman Season and even thecommander is falling in-line! :D ~ Jeff |

RE: HL Sherman
Are those HL or Mato sprockets?
If they are the Mato brand, are they metal or plastic and how do they mesh with THOSE tracks? The newly announced riders will look good on this. :D ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
The HL sprockets are too narrow so I used the Mato metal sprockets. They were a bit of a game to fit but got there in the end.
|
RE: HL Sherman
....made a start on the crew:D

RE: HL Sherman
Ah, thanks Frank. I haven't got that far on measuring things yet. I have a set of HL metal tracks coming and even though they appear to be 'wrong', just the thought of rusting them up and having the chevrons shining through has me excited. :)
I wish I had your talent on figures. :D Those are pretty nice. ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
I think even the HL plastic tracks would look ok with a bit of paint. It will be interesting to see if the HL metal tracks are still hollow on the backs:eek:

RE: HL Sherman
The gearboxes are std HL ones. I used the plastic ones that came with the tank to see what needed to de done to fit the Mato sprockets/tracks.
The output shafts needed shortening 5.5mm, with the flat extending to suit. The shafts are also a VERY tight fit so I decreased the diameter by drill/file. The threaded hole for fixing the sprocket on is also very shallow, but now I know what needs to be done I can modify some steel stug boxes to suit;) http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2e64e7ad.jpg |
RE: HL Sherman
Okay... I am embarrassed to ask this but how do the HL "caps" come off the sprockets? [:o] I'm about to put them under my drill press, just being a little impatient tonight watching the race at the same time! :D
I'd like to save them with the gearboxes to possibly sell them off. I am probably going with either the Mato or the metal HL sprockets on this M36B1 as I am might take it to Danville as the electronics are a little salty. ;) So, TANKS! :) ~ Jeff |
RE: HL Sherman
The caps are just a push fit, I pried them off using a scapel blade;)
|
RE: HL Sherman
Thanks... that's the impression I was getting but it was being a little rough on my patience! :D
