HL M41 Bulldog fat head

've been working on my Bulldog, trying to make the turret more scale size when compared to the hull. I'm a newbie to tanks and it's been many years since I modeled anything so the learning curve is steep, but I'm struggling forward. I've glued myself to the model many times!

I've seen several exceptional builds of the M41 by Louis and Greengiant that were inspiring but way beyond my skill level or time to stay focused, but thought I might as well show what a half-assed modeler can do.

I started by adding 5mm hdpe strips and hdpe plate to the upper turret. I then added Plastruct as reactive armor plates on top with finishing nails. I guess it looks more Monitor or Merrimac than post WW2 but I'm okay with it.
After that I let it sit for a couple weeks but wasn't happy with the lower turret and finally built it out with hdpe strips and Plastruct sheet. My first time ever heat-bending Plastruct! This is still a work in progress and I notice that the more I work on it, the more invested in the project I become! It's almost as if my other tanks are too easy and this one is the difficult child that craves the most attention!
I'm not going for any particular Bulldog but building strictly from my minds eye. Enjoy the pictures and feel free to comment!

Got some paint on the turret this weekend but I still haven't figured out an easy way to close the gaps between the top and bottom halves and still have them separable? Anyway, I had a good day with my Granddaughter on Sunday! Priorities are important!

Looks like you are having fun. I have done a few M41 “modernization builds” and enjoyed myself. It is always nice to see when other people build something “outside the box”. Good job.

JREEVES 04-09-2019 04:12 AM

It is fun! Wish I had your talent. Your modernized M41's are really fantastic. I'd love to build one like them but don't have the parts to. I have ordered a few items from Aliexpress but the shipping cost limits my investment.

Cool build. The chain hanging on the front makes me think of a gold chain hanging around someone's neck. A fat head needs a gold chain around it's neck to distract from the fat head... :)

Google "M41 DK-1" to see the ultimate NATO fathead Bulldog.

JREEVES 04-21-2019 06:19 AM

I have seen the DK-1. It's pretty cool with all the upgrades but the squared off bustles on the turret don't satisfy my preference for the Bulldog distinctive turret shape. Mine is obviously a fantasy version from parts I have laying around or fashion myself. Fsttanks has the best looking M41's to my eye, wish I had his skills!

Hey, no offense ment, I like your build, reminds me of the passive armour on Merkavar II, I bet if the IDF had fielded M41 it would have looked like your project, but with side skirts ; )

JREEVES 04-21-2019 08:07 AM

None taken! If it suited my fancy, I'd paint it candy red with racing stripes! ;)

Thank you for the kind words.

I like the recovery log you attached to the rear. I have been thinking about doing this too.

Your talent speaks for itself. I find it refreshing to see the creativity without the obsession to make everything perfectly scale and essentially too delicate too use and abuse. A static model is great if you're satisfied with a piece to admire and dust! I'd love to buy more spare parts from Aliexpress, but the hobby budget limits that indulgence to once a month. One day I'd like to copy one of your designs.
The log is a mixed blessing, choose the wrong stick and it dries out and breaks from hard knocks!

I don't build mine to be perfect examples and museum pieces just to be a little better looking and interesting than stock, though I can and have built many museum quality level models over the last 40 years. I build mine like you said, to be used and abused, which means not waisting time on a lot of little things that will either break off when driven through brush or rubbing against rocks, or be covered in dirt and mud in short order. I can and do respect the time and hard work put into a highly detailed builds as we each have our own "itch to scratch".

Your work is far ahead of what you think it to be. You are doing and trying things many others are either unable, or too afraid to try for fear of what others might think or say. In this hobby outside the box builds and methods are often shunned by the old time hobbyist, but embraced by the newer hobbyist. Just have fun and build what you want, the desire to build super accurate and detailed will come in time and you will use all the skills learned while having fun building outside the box.

Nice armor upgrade. Thanks for sharing the photos of your work progress.

Thanks! It would be nice if Heng Long made the turret more "correct" relative to the hull, but it was a fun challenge to fatten it up. I most like the difference the Plasti-Dip has made to the treads. Unlike what I've read, it seems to be holding up nicely, climbs better and makes a big difference on slippery floors.
