Tamiya? Scratch and Dent? Military discount? That's really scraping the barrel.
How about Hot Bodies D8T for 300 (with code), RC Monster conversion for 90, Hobbywing combo for 190, Flysky radio for 30, EXI servo for 15... That's about as cheap as you can get a real truggy for, and the Hot Bodies also needs numerous upgrades to be reliable on a racetrack.
Dude, we have nothing to tell each other, just different perspectives.
Here's my baby since we're sharing...my 4th truggy but the only one I currently own. As mentioned, my bud has the MT4.
and with the SC8...

Of course I know of them, but not seen a single tamiya that isn't a 1/10th touring car or vintage re-release in Europe ever. The TRF trug ever dine anything at national level? Do you think its comparable to other pure race truggies?

Tell me one thing that separates the X-RAY from the TRF which causes you to consider the XRAY a pure race truggy VS the TRF something else?

my 2 cents . I would not recommend HPI/HB anything in the States until Hobbico gets everything sorted.
The TRF line of cars are top notch 1/10 or 1/8 and yes equal to Xray, Mugen in quality. Tamiya, for whatever reason just doesnt go after the offroad racing crowd like they do with onroad..........which dominates year in and year out.
Saw Lutz laying down the law with 801B years ago before he inked his 10 year deal with Durango.
Beautiful trucks guys, is envy a sin ? lol

Just recently got a jammin x2 crt-e Truggy,
castle 2200kv motor and mamba monster esc, I ran it once on 6s, one word (mental)
melted the center diff as the stock oil was too light allowing the center diff to unload too easily, thus over heating,
went up 2 teeth on the pinion and its just perfect on 4s now, the perfect Truggy for me.

Liar? lol. First time I think I've ever been called a liar on this forum. What's my motivation to lie?
Military discount and scratch and dent is scraping the barrel. Tamiya surprised me as well, because I've never seen an off roader of theirs in competition. That's it. You read way too much into it. Yeh, it's a conspiracy on my part to make Tamiya truggies look bad, ***?
Get real buddy and calm down.

I have had the trophy truggy flux since it came out. I had it on preorder. Its a great truggy for the money. I also have a losi 8t 2.0 converted to electric.
Now there are a few things to do to the trophy truggy to make it rock solid and the parts to do so are cheap. Internal hardened spider gears for the diffs. You need 3 sets and they are $11 each set at amains. I put them a month after l got my trophy and they are still going today almost 2 years later. You need the 3.5mm shock shafts for the lightning stadium truck ( its the same as the trophy truggy) the stock 3mm ones bend easily. Have not bent or broken a 3.5mm hardened one and they were like $10 for a set at amains.
A few upgrades I did was ball bearings in the steering assembly and l replaced the servo with a faster ,stronger one. Oh and I installed mug gaurds on the back arms . Put 7k wt oil in the front diff, 10k in the center, and 3k in the rear. Put 45 or 50w oil I the shocks depending on track conditions. Thats it. Again its a great truck and me and my brother race it and the losi. The losi is smoother and slightly easier to drive but the trophy truggy is still very capable. Its been a very durable truck too.
