How do you remove the Flywheel? Is it threaded on or pressed on?

Thanks

Its pressed on. take the pilot nut off and then if it doesnt just slide off you can tap the back side with the handle of a screw driver. Shouldnt have to tap it hard

Thanks, that worked.

by chance do you know how to remove the crank. Looks like i need to push the bearing out (near the flywheel) but I'm having a hard time getting pushed out.

Did you take the piston and sleeve out? The crank will slide right out the back of the block.

Sorry, this is the first time working on an engine. How do you get the piston and sleeve off?

Thanks for the help

No problem. Everyone had a first time.
Take the head and the back plate off. Turn the crank so the piston is at its lowest then slide the piston shaft off the crank. The piston will come out the top of the head. After that you can take the crank out the back.
Just curious why are you taking it apart?

I guess I should have told you, this is a Losi M26SS. Iwent to the Hellfire because the flywheel is HPI. But the rest is Losi stuff......

I went to start it today and it wouldn't crank over, took it apart and found the spin start part was broken. Took it apart more and found the piston head had pits in it, along with the cylinder head. So I need to rebuild it I guess. When I put the piston to the lowest point, I can't slide the connectingrod of the crank because there is a lip. I moved the pistonto the top, still won't slide off the crank.

Any other ideas?

Try turning it to just past the lip

That didn't work either. The connecting rod only has a little bit of side to side movement. Dang it.......

Sorry, did you remove the sleeve yet?
The sleeve has to come out before the piston. Forgot to type that

Sometimes it can be a real hassle to get out depending on the engine and other times it almost falls out. If you keep trying you will get it. Just be careful not to scratch any internal parts.
The first time i did it was a pain and scary. But now i could almost take and engine apart with my eyes shut. You will be ok.

My hitech 985 servo craped itself after 2 years of abuse. No $ to get another. Havent bashed my HF for 2 weeks.[]

SWEET!!! After I removed the sleeve, I got the piston and connecting rod out. Thanks for the help.

I hait to assume, but it's cheaper to rebuild versus buying a new enigine. I figured I would go ahead and replace the clyinder head, piston, sleeve, connecting rod, pin and c clip.

What is the difference in the washer that's between the cylinder head and piston sleeve?

Thicker: more compression

Thinner: less compression

Thanks again for your knowledge and help.

Hmm, not positive on that one. I know you can change it to use different nitro content but Im not sure which size does what. Stussman maybe?

Are you talking about the shims on the head button that sits onto the sleeve? If so different engines have different size shims with different thickness. My os 28 has 2 thin and 1 thicker shim. I left all 3 shims on for breakin then took 1 thin 1 out.
Less shims gives more compression which can give more power but to much compression results in early detonation in the chamber which can damage the engine. Research the engine and see how many shims you need.
Pitting on the piston head and button can be a result of early detonation. I damaged an os28 last year because i took 1 to many shims out it badly pitted the piston and button.
I would only rebuild an engine if it was an expensive engine. Most cheap to mid range engine arent worth rebuilding. By the time you check the cost between the rebuild and upgrading to a better engine it isnt worth it.

I often snap the pins in the driveshafts. I have been using nails etc which i snap and slot in. Most times they work fine.

Great info there stuss.
I dont think the pin broke. It looks like it just worked its way out. The pin was sticking partly out of the shaft. Im going to take a closer look at it tomorrow.

People, I snapped the "rip cord"on my Hellfire... went out and bought a Ofna starter box used (good shape).

Now, I tried it, but it seems too weak to the motor to turn over... plus it "skids"all over the cog that it's supposed to turn.. doesn't seem to stick to it well enough.

Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

What type of motor does the starter box use?
What type of batteries are you using?
What do you mean by the cog?

The flywheel must sit exactly over the box wheel and the HF must sit down fully flat on the box. Adjust the allignment pegs etc on the box to get it exact. Make sure the batteries are fully charged, loosen the glow plug, heat the engine if not broken in.

I finally had a decent bash again with my HF. Bent the rear suspension mount during a long cartwheel off a high bank,The servo i swapped from steering to throttle craped itself and i had a runaway but no damage. Also destroyed a rear tyre running on a dry dam bed which had many sharp sticks. Good fun.

Im waiting for my new servo horn to get here so I can get my HF going again. The Hitec servo I put in for steering keeps eating the plastic horns.
