Trouble with HPI .28 top end on my MBX-5t - help
Guys-= my HPI .28 is making really disappointing top end. Today I ran almost a gallon through it, I had it too leaned at one point, just because it seemed way too slow and I wanted to see where "too hot" was - I am running HPI .28 bog block (4.6) with a 14t bell on mbx5t. OFNA .28 blew this away, and that wasn't too brilliant either.. At one point I was only 1 5/8 turns out - running steady 268 - 271 degrees -= too hot for comfort, but it ran well... with exception to the dissapointing top end. I richened it up to 2 1/2 turns but that seemed over rich by a touch, and top end wasn't too different. it ran about 248, which is where I ran most of the day - maybe even a tad richer at 230. Again, better running temp, but same mediocre top end.
I have a brand new wasp .28 turbo.. I know many people seem to be saying spare yourself the aggrevation, but are these motors THAT bad?? Has anyone had success with them, and if so, please POST?! I'd like to know what I can do to either 1) improve the HPI's top end, or otherwise 2) make the WASP work
thanks

RE: Trouble with HPI .28 top end on my MBX-5t - help
cause that engines power band isnt specifically made for truggy's more so MT's
i have seen 528's up in the MBX5T with a 13T clutchbell and it rips!! i have also seen OPS .28 in a MBX5T, it hauls as well with stock gearing.
once you start going past 14T clutchbells, at that point you are adding more stress to the engine, that engine wasnt designed for that truggy. its a sport engine for a MT like the MGT and so on.
like what has been said many times, a nice race .21 will haul the MBX5T around the track just fine.

I have several options in my head regarding a new roller...Mugen MBX5T, Tazer from SoCal is another....Im not racing jus bashing around and looking for good power all around but dont want to steal the kids piggy bank to doit. I like the idea og a larger motor .28/.30 tired of my buddy running his mouth bout his big fancy Mugen and some funky ass $300 motor. Thas jus not my budget,Im out to have fun not play with screwdriver all day...Any One?

Hi,
90% of the time, the 13T bell is used no matter in buggy or truggy. Fine gear ratio adjustments are made on spur gear. I think also you geared too low to have this problem, not enough torque to accelerate and heating up the engine.
If possible, hang with the Hellfire stock pipe, it is larger than your JP-2 and should give more appropriate power band. You can get one cheap on Ebay.
Regards
Joaquim
