Default Truggy shopping - advice needed.

I'm thinking about buying an RTR truggy setup.

Some bashing, but may race it as well. I've been out of the RC loop for years as far as cars go. Didn't even know there was such a thing as a truggy!

I'm targeting the truggys in the 400(plus or minus 25 bucks) price range, because I don't want to put any more than that on my credit card.

I've narrowed it down to these 3. And yes, I did a search, and did find some info, just looking for more input:

Kyosho Inferno US Sports truggy - did some reading up on it, seems like a good value at this price range, parts pretty easy to get, easily upgradeable, but it's necessary to change a few parts to utilize the stronger chassis.

OFNA Mutilator - Good engine(from what I have read), but some durability issues, mainly the knuckles, and gearing is off. Parts availability is good as well, and can be upgraded though not as easily it seems as the Kyosho.

VTX ST-1 - Not much info on this one that I found.

Durability isn't a huge issue with me, if the parts are upgradeable to something stronger. I broke so many parts on my T-Maxx 4 years ago, that the thing was practically rebuilt but bulletproof by the time I was done. So parts availablity is an important factor.

How do the 3 compare as far as the engines offered? I see the VTX has a .26, the Mutilator has a .32, and the Inferno has a .28. I realize displacement may not be everything, but how do the power levels compare between these 3 engines?

Any other info you guys can provide me would be great. Thanks.

Have you checked out th GS racing Pro XUT RTR or the CEN ARENA TR RTR? These 2 seem really sweet for the price. They are a little bit more pricey than that they are both $449.99 at www.amainhobbies.com Hope this helps

I have a little bit of run in with the mutilator, its a strong truck but the knuckles are very weak.
The engine isnt the strongest on the bottom end,but the pull start is the biggest problem leaving blisters all over my hands.

I've heard a couple people say the kyosho suffers from a "dumpy engine".
But most rtr's this is a problem in the first place.

an affordable and race worthy truggy to consider is the TTR ST-1....some minor cheap mods and it is race worthy...nothing against the VTX...but I would question parts support..I know not everyone sells TTR but it is readily available on the web... fellas theis truggy turns with the best out there, at a fracton of the cost of the high end kits....just a matter of you guys setting up shocks and diff fluids... the vtx has a great motor....but the chassis reeks of hellfire linage...

I had the Mutilator and I replaced three knuckles in a 2 month period. I bashed it on a ballpark and a grassy area with good mounds to jump and the thing ran reliable. Good first impression. On another day I got with my buddies to run against MT's (all Savage) AND IT RAN RELIABLE! Until i got on my tank 4 when I goosed the throttle and then the front wheels wobbled and ploop......knuckle broke. The third run on another day after repairs and a .28 and gearing changes I ran it for a tank and brought it in for refueling and brake adjustment I stopped it with my foot and ploop......knuckle broke. The last such run I had was at night after the repairs but this was my fault running with no top. My antenna fell and off the truck went at full tilt using the best brakes on earth, the wall. That was more of a BAM! Knuclkes broken. What survives at appx. 35 mph? The smaller hits are unacceptable. I searched for compatable parts but no results. I sold it. I want a Monster GT again and upgrade the steering and put some Blast wheels on it and be done with it.

I have put some thought to it because I was really pleased with the Axial .28 in its debut. I sort of miss having a monster truck. I am considering the CEN GST or back to the monster gt. I had a MGT with an Axial .28 18/46 gearing and it still pulled the wheelies and was hot fast. I sold it for the truggy. The Mutilator just killed me though.

okay heres my advice... Stay away from the 3 truggies on your list, they are pretty low on the totem pole IMO and have not yet proven their reliability.

Buy a used CRT Pro, then add the rest of the parts you need like motor and radio, you will spend slightly more but end up with 100X beter Truggy.

if you guys ever get a kick ass boss that tells you to bring it in to work... never quit your job. I'm still debating on bringin it in. I could break it in at the shop, with controlled temps, and still get paid to do it

You know you want to. Who cares if the Mechanic gets to have some fun?
