HYSOL QUESTION-BYRON CORSAIR
Just got a Byron Corsair kit and was wondering if you could use Hysol to install the ply formers and bulkheads without using the old tried and true (buy messy) fibreglass cloth and polyester resin. I've heard that Hysol can be used alone in this type of application but I want to make sure that what I install stays in place. Since the fibreglass that Byron used was polyester I have heard that there aren't many adhesives that stick to it very well. Your thoughts and opinions would be most welcome.

I used Hysol on several areas on my Byron Corsair with great results.
The main formers were put in with goop, then glassed using polyester resin and cloth. The cloth is a good idea to help spread the load along the surfaces. I would recommend the cloth as well for extra support. Just my 2cents.
I did a complete build thread here, with pictures etc.
Look forward to seeing your progress.

Hysol used to be a brand name for adhesives, epoxy resin being only one of many types and formulations. Has that changed? If so, what is the type of adhesive to which you are referring? Thanks.
Sincerely,
Richard

McMaster-Carr is a good source, http://www.mcmaster.com. Type in 6430A33 in their find (search) window. It's listed as 9462 under epoxy adhesives. You can buy the applicator gun as well.
Great stuff, it's expensive but it definitely works on polyester fiberglass. I've used it on a Byron P-51 and YA Zero.

I think this is the stuff you're talking about. It's kind of a gel when it's mixed and doesn't run. It's available from Aircraft Spruce specialties.

Another excellent choice is methylmethacrylate from Priddy sales. I prefer it over Hysol products, not that Hysol is a bad product:

RE: HYSOL QUESTION-BYRON CORSAIR
Ive been using Devcon 30 min epoxy on my Byron Mustang..I cleaned and "roughed" the areas that were going to get epoxied..
I also have a bulkhead to install and was going to use epoxy in place first and then fiberglass the outside to help spread the load..
Hope using the Devcon is ok..Its got me thinking now?

Hey Snake,
The Byron Mustang is a great flying model. I would be wary of using regular epoxy on polyester fibreglass, I don't think it will hold under load. I might be wrong but that's what I've always heard.

RE: HYSOL QUESTION-BYRON CORSAIR
When I put in my formers I used polyester resin with the glass cloth. I have also heard that normal epoxy may seperate after time. Not proven to me, just word of mouth.
The Hysol is a great option, easy to use, does not run, sets hard in about 24 hours.
You can still use the cloth over it if you wish, because it is good to spread any load out from the formers.

My belief is the resin used by Byron was Polyester. You will be fine. Polyester is used as a laminating resin and can be built up in layers without seperations.
Nice kit BTW. Byron kit offerings, what a great time in modeling. Ever see videos of the Byron Warbird shows?

Polyester smells so good. I love the smell in the shop after I have to break out resin or polyester fillers.

You might want to read the MSDS on polyester resin before you enjoy the smell too much. Boat builders went to vacuum impregnation and resin injection of their resin layups for two reasons, 1. for better penetration of the resin in the plies of glass and, 2 to reduce the incidence of fumes in their shops to meet OSHA. Just a health hint from one who suffers resin allergies.

Richard
