RE: ZIROLI 94
My TF said to CG with gear UP.
Jeff from Minnesota has said elsewhere, that he CG's some of his planes with one UP and one DOWN, especially like the Corsair and P40 where they rotate back.
Let us know

One maiden completed: yeh
Prior to going out, I re-binded the plane insuring failsafe has the engine at complete off.
At the field, I did a 360 (90 each time of four times) range check on all surfaces and engine.
The P-40 tracked straight and was off the ground in about 300'.
I needed to max out down trim to get level flying.
Initially, I kept her high and only flew at 1/2 throttle: this engine has plenty of power.
No other trim was needed.
After elevator trim, I flew several low passes.
Did a gear pass.
Full flaps were set on the far side with no change in pitch.
She came in and landed with no problems.
I think I can go vertical with this engine power!.
I'm impressed by how smooth the engine is as I noticed no vibration of the plane at 'start up' time.
Checking the engine, there is room for me to add some more down thrust.
I only did the usual one flight for a maiden so I can 'check her over'.
Videos are being uploaded and will be posted, later.

RE: ZIROLI 94
way to go Sam. Maidens are such a huge step to have in the rearview mirror. Glad to hear it flies nicely. Good day at the field. I am envious as mine still sits in panel lined primer.

thanks, guys.
videos:
The videos are short (nothing longer than 1 1/2 minutes).
taxi and take off (all that down trim needed explains why she took off quickly):

Great job Sam.
Nice to see your 3 piece wing design held up just fine. Maybe Ziroli will incorporate your mods into their plan. I guess I'd better pick up the pace on mine.

Yo guys,
Thanks for all the nice compliments and encouragement.
==============
MORE fine tuning.
Elevator:
I had 25 clicks of down elevator in the trim and needed four turns of the clevis to equal that distance.
Engine down thrust:
After taking the fire wall off, I have less than half a tank of fuel left: I flew 1/2 throttle so I'm glad that I put a 40 oz tank in the fuse.
I needed to remove some of the 'stand offs' so I marked them with masking tape and laid it on the belt sander. The sander is very aggressive so it didn't take long to remove about 3/32" of material off of the bottom 'stand offs'. It also did a nice job of getting the ends of all four standoffs in the same plane so there's no stress on the engine mounts. That's about all the down thrust that I can put in without interfering with the cowl.
Cowl stress:
I noticed some wear on the inside of the cowl so I removed some of the edge of the fire wall where contact was being made.
Engine:
The bolt holding the anti-vibration strap was gone and one muffler bolt was loose: obviously, I did a PP job of securing those!
I put some heavy nylon wrap around the spark plug wire since it goes between the exhaust.
I removed the lead weight and box as I don't think that I'll need it: tomorrow, I'll re-check the CG.
This should also help to keep me from 'nosing over' as I almost did on my maiden landing.
Thanks for all the nice compliments and encouragement.

Thanks PJ,
I'm not sure if it's all the power in the engine or the plane (or both) but it's nice flying her at half throttle as, now, I should be able to do some scale like 300' loops, plus she landed real slow.
===========
ready for the second flight.
The CG is just a tad nose heavy after taking out the nose weight.
This should help on preventing 'nose overs' on landings.
The gun site broke off: my fault as I sanded the sides too thin to fit on the instrument panel: some triangle hard stock should fix it.
Been using my new JR 11X on my new planes.
It has a nice safety feature (which I'm guessing is for electrics); if the throttle is not completely down, the receiver won't engage and you get a message on the transmitter.

Roger,
I went with what Ziroli said: 4" back with the gear down.
The Mejzlik 3-blade 24X10 seems a perfect match for the DA-85 giving 1800/6500 rpms.
One thing I forgot to mention: when I was checking the engine before the flight: when I 'gunned' the engine, the left oleo went down.

Thanks, Marty.
===============
Doubled my flights.
Another perfect day, mid 70's, low wind and sunny so I had to get some more flights in.
All went, boringly (fortunately) well.
I needed a couple clicks down elevator and the plane almost nosed over again after landing.
Before the flight, when cycling the retracts, I had to remove the left main door as the oleo was snagging it.
Initially, the engine wouldn't start so I removed the bottom cowl and about a 1/2 ounce of fuel came out when I removed the spark plug.
After the flight, I noticed the screws holding the straps for the outer wings to the inner wings were loose so I need to PM those.

Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful. The weather, flying site and of course the airplane. Awesome addition to the stable Sam. Congrats on the flights and she really does look nice. I will miss flying with you this year!
All the best my friend,
Scott

Thanks, Scott,
There's always next year.
====================
PM
Wings:
Straps and bolts were epoxied.
Wheels:
The wheel collars moved allowing the tires to rub against the oleo's, which was causing partial 'nosing over' during the landings. I added an extra collar to take up the slack.
Cockpit:
Throttle quadrant fell off: the screws held but the plastic broke. Epoxied the plastic and added (epoxied to wall) a balsa block at the end of the tubes sticking out of the throttle quadrant as their vibration probably caused the breakage (at least the gun site held together after the last repair!).

RE: ZIROLI 94
I trimmed the back of my doors off too Sam...probably went just a little more than you to gain the clearance I needed. My scissors hung up the doors when the door was against the strut going up and I didn't see any other way of actuating the doors without trimming that part off. Cylinders would have solved that problem, but like you say, there's just no where to put them.

RE: ZIROLI 94
More PM.
One of the plastic sheets that I used for ammo hatches got warped by the sun. Must of not had good contact between the surfaces when the epoxy was drying.
On take off, after about 30', I ground looped and ripped out one gear.
Probably only doing about 10 MPH but, with the mount external to the wings surface, the aircraft ply and screws were not enough for that kind of side pressure so I'll have to re-engineer that area.
