Well didn't get it in the air [:@]

I had some issues with my receiver which I didn't get sorted out until I got home that night. I did get it balanced and ready to fly, but unfortunately with the problem couldn't. It ended up weighing just unter 19 lbs. Not bad for a large plane.

Setup:
2x 6S 5800 mah packs (behind the firewall)
Eflite Power 160 motor
Castle 110 HV ESC
Prop: 20-10 APC electric
Spectrum receiver

Turned out nice and was one of the better fitting planes from ESM so far. Wish I got a flight on it though.

Well it flies great! Got one flight in yesterday and it's fast and handles well. A little nose heavy on take off, but with the gear up it was perfect. Really looks nice in the air with the gear up and no engine hanging out of the cowl. Had a minor issue on landing when I pulled back on the stick to get the tail wheel down to steer, oh yeah it's a tri-gear plane and lost steering for a second and clipped the fence with a wing. Damage repaired and ready for next weekend. It's going to be hard to remember to push forward since all my other warbirds are tail draggers

Congrats on the maiden!!!

You don't have to push the stick forward after you land, just go to neutral on the elevator and the nose should stay on the ground. At least that's what works on my old DCM 1/5th scale. (pic in my gallery)

Yeah, that would have worked too, but I have too many tail draggers and am so used to pulling back a little to get the tail down that that's my usual landing sequence. Next time leave the hands off the elevator

Jmohn,
I know you have a buddy or two over there that can get some video of her.
A-lot of guys (including KMP or any ESM distributor) would love to see this baby in action. I gaurantee it would help their sales dramaticly .
It would certainly help make up my mind.
Glad you hear it was a success and we look fwd to getting more info from you on all corners of the flight envelope! [8D]

I will get some video this weekend for sure. We have a warbird event and it will be in the air for sure with my cameraman. It's a very cool plane and so unique on the flight line today too. So many people came by to look and talk yesterday. Very easy to fly and didn't have any bad habits either. Didn't try the flaps as I had a pretty stong head wind yesterday.

Jeff,

With that battery set up how long can you fly. If you had a choice is there another electric motor, prop and battery combination you would have preferred. The reason I ask is I need to make my motor choice in a week or so. Also I wouldn't mind seeing some photographs of your battery installation with access and your motor mount.

Paul,

The batteries are mounted under the gear right behind the firewall. I just made a battery box and velcro them in place. I flew for 6-7 minutes last weekend and had 35% left on my packs. I am using two 6S 5800 packs and flew modestly the whole flight. I would guess you could fly for 10 minutes or more depending on how hard you fly. I set my timer for 6 minutes to be safe and will bump it to 7-8 now.

One thing to change is that you need to make a small indentation on the brace below where the nose gear installs. The hose barb above that hit the wood and broke right off on a landing that was pretty good. I think it just flexed a little and broke it off. I just cut in about 1/4 inch to prevent that from happening again.

The CG is right on the manual's recommendations. I have mine a little forward, but it flies fine that way. You might want to add a little down thrust in the motor as the wings have a little too much positive incidence in them for my taste. I am going to add about 2 degrees to mine and see how it flies. Make sure you get one of Ty's cockpit kits... they are awsome and look great in the plane. Lots of power with my setup so you can use half-throttle most of the time and get more from your battery packs.

BTW - here is a photo of the battery box.

Jeff,

Thanks for the cg info. I do plan to buy one of Ty's cockpit kits. I have one for my Hurricane. I'll get one for the P-39 after it flys and proves it is worth dolling up.

I decided to put a hatch in so I could but the batteries standing up right behind the firewall. I did this on my Hurricane and it worked out well. Also the area your batteries are in is where the none gear doors operating mechanism is. I just couldn't abide that huge "Q" hole I had to build doors.

Yes, but I don't have it yet. We had a warbird event at our fields last weekend and there were all kind of photos and video of my flight. Just can't get anyone to send me some.

Here is a link to some flying video. Unfortunately it's of me hitting the stupid net at the field. Pulled back on the elevator and lost steeing. Damage was repaired and flew the next weekend. Good flier for sure

Some more good flights last weekend and all went well. It's a good flier for sure.

She will cruze around at half throttle very nicely and is very fast if you go full throttle. It seems much larger than my other planes that size. It must be because the full-scale plane is so much smaller than say my Hurricane. The full scale P-39 has a wing 34 feet and fuze of 30 feet and the Hurricane is 40 feet wing and 32 foot fuze. It just looks so large compared to each other and they both have the same size wings on the RC planes (82 inches).

Anyway good flier for sure!

ORIGINAL: jmohn

I used an old spinner from my Hanger 9 P-51, drilled out the end and installed a cannon. Looks pretty close to the real plane. Need to trim it a little.

Can you tell me what size is the spinner as ESM does not state the size in the manual?
Thank you.

I used one from the Hanger 9 150 size P-51. If you order that one it's the right size whatever that is? I think it's 5 inch.

jmohn,

The plane looks really sharp. Did you have to cut any cooling holes on the bottom of the fuse. Just don't see much air getting in to cool the motor and ESC. Do you have any pics with the cowl removed?

Yes, I did install some cooling holes under the cowl to provide some cooling for the engine and ESC. I may need more as it gets hotter. I haven't flown it much on hot days yet, so I am not sure how well it will cool. I may need some more.

I don't have any pictures with the cowl off, but it's just an engine mount, motor and ESC in front of the firewall. Everything else is in the fuse.

would you say a 32cc 2 stroke gas or the Saito Sg 36 220 4 stroke Gas engine would be a good match for this plane
Thanks

I love the Saito 36 FG and have two now. It should be pleanty of motor for this plane. I have a power 160 electric in there which produces slightly more power than the Saito does, but you really don't need that much power. It will hang out a bunch because it's a 4-stroke, but it's so smooth and sips the gas you should be able to fly 30 minutes or more.

in your opinion would the saito fit in the cowl if mounted inverted as i don't really want to have a cylinder head sticking out the side . I have been flying a top flight P39 for the past 7 years I started with a GMS .76 ringed engine and am now running an ASP .91 but with both I had to mount them side way's with the cylinder sticking out the side and it just doesn't look rite .
