Dash7ATP, could you post some of the pics you have of the P-40 for us less than fortunate lovers of the plane?

Here are a few of what I have. Ihad a compiuter crash about a year ago and lost some of my close-ups. If you look closely, you can see the oleo strut just forward of the wheel.
Enjoy
The inflight photos Itook from the back seat of an Avenger. That was some ride.!

Here are a few more showing the aircraft and my model. Sorry about the old man in the photos (that's me) but I did want to show a few more details of the P-40.

The wings were your standard flap and aleron setup and were easy to install the servos and control rods. Both the alerons and flap setup look very scale with them recessed into the wings.
The gear was easy to install, but needed a little adjustment as the rotating mechanism rubbed on the inside spare. I a little dremel work and they fit great. The gear mechanism is very smooth and look solid. I haven't installed the gear cowlings yet, but they look pretty easy. They are in three pieces that must be assebled. I am not going to intall gear doors on the mains as the door are so little I don't see an need to do it. I will install doors for the tail wheel.

I might loose the Z bend and use metal clevis's. Depending on the prop you use, you could get
the plane to 90 mph in a dive. Just a thought..

The model was a giant Scale Planes model. They don't list it now, but it appears to be the same as the CMP model. It's a 120 (or 140) size model at 73 inch span. Ihave a YS 1.20 in it and it has plenty of power. It takes off at way less than half throttle!
By using an exhaust header from Central HObbies as used in pattern planes, I was able to keep the entire cowl intact with only a small pipe coming out the bottom. I did enlarge the cooling air exit and opened two small openings at the bottom rear, about 1 x 1 1/2 in each.,

RE: ESM P-40 build
G'day Jeff,
Reference your retracts, are they complete Sierra units or modified ESM ones. Reason I ask is a couple of weeks ago I spoke to Darrell at Sierra and he said he was not planning on making complete units for the ESM P40 but was thinking of making some replacement items to make the gear last longer (a few items he said were a bit weak). If they are complete Sierra units are they specifically for the ESM P40 or another model that was a close fit? Did you get them direct from Sierra or VQ? Have you had a chance to balance the plane yet and reference your engine installation, did the muffler clear the firewall easily or did you have to modify things. Appreciate any info you can give. Cheers,
Dave

Dave,
The retracts are from VQ. Thought they were Sierra, but could be ESM. I got them a while ago. I will check with Thomas to make sure as he sent them in a plain white box with no label.

Thanks Dash7ATP,
It's good to see some fresh pics and info. I set the inflight over trees picture as the background on my laptop. Thanks.

I used that photo for my desktop also for a long time!
If there is any interest (enough owners of CMPmodels), I can go over the mods Imade on my kit to make it a better model. What Idid with the engine and exhaust and cooling should be of interest. Also my changes in the gear mount. The rest was just a paint scheme change to match the one shown in my photos. My orginial CJMgear left a lot to be desired and I would not have recommended it to anyone. They (Century Jet) have done a lot to upgrade the system I have in my P-40 and now it's doing just fine.
I'm also considering stripping the wing and tail surfaces and sheeting and glassing them this winter. The elevator is not scale, so will change that at the same time if I do the wing. I don't know why CMPdidn't fully sheet the wings on these models to begin with. The weight saved or the cost of the little extra balsa needed to do that should have been no factor. If my kit had come fully sheeted, I'd have done that as Iassembled the kit to start with.

RE: ESM P-40 build
Dash,
Great photos of the P40! Thanks for sharing them. I had CMP P40 too, but lost it due to an in-flight fire> My ESC caught fire in-flight. The only thing that I would save were the Robart retracts It did fly great and was a nice looking plane too.
This new ESM is much better and more scale. It also has fully sheeted wings. I still have a lot to do and some things to figure out too. Still, very pleased so far and can't wait to get it in the air.

Got the cowl fitted on with the exhaust and it's great. Hardly sticks out at all. Great setup with the DA50 and Bryson pitts style muffler.

Jeff,
Where the heck is Shakopee MN? I used to go to Menomonie for work all the time, but haven't heard of Shakopee.
Too cold there in the winter for me.

RE: ESM P-40 build
Getting close to finishing, but still some hard stuff to do.
- install the air valve and servo (have to move this as the cockpit will be in the way)
- install the fuel tank (may have to move this a little too)
- install throttle and choke (may just go with a manual choke)
- install a canopy latch (easy)
- install tail wheel doors (should be easy after looking at how Aeroworks setup the ones on their P51)
Then just balance and fly

Jeff-
Per our discussion here are a couple of the Parrot-head P-40 walk-around pictures I took at Reno this year. Hope they inspire or help the builders in this discussion group.

Oh and just in case anyone wonders, it was no hangar queen/ static display; it raced in the Unlimited bronze class and was awesome to hear and watch race.

RE: ESM P-40 build
My ESM P-51 has pull-pull for the elevator as well as the rudder. Is the P-40 like this? I'm not real crazy about pull-pull for the elevator and am mulling over ideas about how to change this. If the P-40 is also pull-pull elevator, are you going with that or doing something else?
Thanks,
Randy

RE: ESM P-40 build
Randy,
The P-40 has a servo for each half of the elevator. They install in the horizontal stab. Much better than the pull-pull
My LA-7 is a pull-pull too and it's a little sensitive because of that.
Tim,
Those are some great shots! I love the one in flight. Send more.
Looks like I am flying Saturday...sorry

RE: ESM P-40 build
Jeff - Can you post some photos of the elevator setup? A dual elevator/servo arrangement was one of the options I've been considering. My hesitation here would be the added weight waaay aft with two servos and the fabrication/installation of the servo mounts.
Thanks,
Randy

I spoke with Darrell about a month ago and he told me the same thing he told you. I'm certain these are the ESMs.
