G-Pete’s P-47M HV-Z, 44-21108
Time for a new bird!
This time I will show more the research and development side of the progress. Framing and sheeting of an 85 inch Top Flite GS P-47 has been seen here many times. I will skip that part entirely.
The base model will be a Top Flite GS P-47D.
The control surfaces have not the right shape – this need to be changed. The Canopy is wrong too - needs a new one.
The landing gear has not the right angle in the wing. Therefore the spar has to be modified. Oil cooler shutters and waste gate need to reshape like the turbo charger housing and exhaust.
The rudder needs some improvements and fitted for the M version…
These are only a few of the changes that need to be made – that will be interesting…
I ordered two plastic models – to try some paint and other stuff.
The model will be USAAF Capt. Witold (Lanny) Lanowski’s P47M of the 56th FG
Capt. Lanowski passed away 15 years ago – God bless his heart. May this keeps the memory of him a little longer alive.
The first task was to recreate his personal insignia on the port side of the cowl. Very unusual and impressive. Everything what I found was “similar” but not right.
Time for CAD and CorelDraw4, the pictures show the development on the insignia. Took some time but I'm happy with the result. After the spay paint there will be some brush strokes added for the "german panel lines".
On request I sent out files.

G-Pete,
great if you start a new project ... Knowing how precise and grate your models are, we all will enjoy following this topic...
Best regards

Nice! Good luck on your new project.
Good on ya' for getting the insignia just right. Are you sure the nose isn't supposed to be yellow? Looks a different shade in the B&W photo from the rest of the plane.

Pete
I built HV-Z last year with my 92" Ziroli jug.
great flying plane until I lost it[:@]
anyways, I have other information on this plane
if you need it.
I also have over the course of the past 2 years
exchanged quite a few emails with Lanny's
son Krys. I can put you in touch with him offline
if you want.

Dang.. when I seen 'G-Pete' & 'P-47' in the subject I thought for sure you were going to build the
XP-47 with the V16 2500hp Chrysler Hemi.. lol. but the one your doing looks very cool.

RE: G-Pete’s P-47M HV-Z, 44-21108
hi G-pete i am plugging on with my T/F P47 and as soon as i have something decent to show i will post some picks. What i have managed to do is fit all the retract system in the belly pan of the wing so its a complete system integral with the wing so no connections between the fus. and wing.
I am wondering where i could get a razor back canopy as the one supplied is the bubble and the razor back has more hard nose appeal to me.
Also the weight of the wheels i am not a scale purist so am not fanatical about scale detail but i find the 5inch and 5 1/2 wheels that are around very heavy.
Has anyone done any weight comparisons on the wheels that fit these large war birds? the Dubro,s i have in my box of spare wheels are about 8 oz each and they look a bit naff to.
Dave.

Didn't build the HV-Z but the HV-K. Close enough? Got about 25 flights on it so far. New BME 50 engine starting to come alive. Hey Pete, if you get it done soon enough, we'll get them in the air together sometime next season! Paul

Thanks Mirce, good to see you here.
IL2 – yes it just looks that way, still reseaching the correct colors. As I stated in the first post the colors will be different.
Todd, sure I take your offer (PM sent) thank you!
P-40K-5 and Jeff, I kicked the idea of a P-47J around. It’s not complete of the table – but not now. The XP is a very nice project – get off the keyboard Jeff and finish that thang.
Dave, I have scale wheels for the Jug – I have to weigh them tonight and let you know. As of the canopy [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSV09&P=ML]click here [/link]. I developed a razorback conversion and Terry made a plug and sells them [link=http://www.wyliewarbirds.com/products/wwbglass/fiberglassparts.htm]click here.[/link]
Paul, sure she will be done by next season. Maybe by the Austin event…

I think the engine for the XP47 is in the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, Conn. I think it is there. I know I have seen it some place.

We at " Meisterland South " will be watching. I'm in the middle of a T F jug 325th # 68 " Cherry Mary" to replace the one I lost at Mac Hodges' event. Curious to see the mods you have planned. Especially the mounting of the gear. Not much room for change there. The shape of the surfaces could stand improvement. Great to start out with a good flying plane Good luck..........Doug Smith

The plastic models came in. Tamiya 1:48 and Hasegawa 1:32, the Hasegawa is ready for primer. Maybe I get to paint that model today.
The first task after the models are completed is to make a new canopy. The canopy from TF is, at least for me, not usable. There are many flaws and the shape is not correct. While I'm making the molds I will decide if I make a sliding canopy or not. The technique will be the same as on the Betty Page. Two molds for vacuum forming, one for the canopy it self and one for the frame.
The smoke pump from the Beetle had a lose wire (I thought that thang burned up), that was just a small solder job - so the smoke pump goes in Lanny's Jug. Still looking for a source of black smoke...anyone?
I'm thinking about to install a FlyCamOne right where the original gun camera was. The camera can run of the A123 battery power and needs just a USB port somewhere to download the "sortie".

You bet Bob, I'm still undecided about the shrink bar on the landing gear. Sure, I will post pictures - but you have to be a little patient some small stuff first.
Stay tuned...

Casey,
How's your P-47 coming along? I am wating the arrival of mine from Jeff soon. Still not sure about the paint scheme, but want to go with a "natrual" finish if possible.

That's right....forgot you just moved. Are you still in Yuba City or another town close by? Nice area...love fishing the Feather River.
