Thanks for the info FTIR. Finally got mine together and maidened today. Was a bit hairy at first, took a lot of down trim, thought I was tail heave at first. Had to also add a lot of expo as if flew way more agile then I thought it could or would. Seemed to fly "lighter" then my lighter giant stick! The engine is still breaking in and is running a bit rough in the mid section, think I might need to lean it out a tad, but it did seem to improve a bit as the second flight went on. Will likely run it a bit more and then pull the cowl and tune it again. Its spinning an 18/8 at 8k, might try a 20/8, certainly doesn't need any more speed, have to admit it quite surprised me all in all, esp for its weight and engine size.
You can see in the pics the air dam I was talking about, and all the lead caviar I made out of epoxy and shot. I also ended up foregoing the pull pull on the elevator, it ended up binding against the rudder clevis. Ran a 440 rod through a carbon fiber rod like flex rod to keep it stiff. I kept the joiner between the elev. halves but it also didn't inspire confidence so I bent up the long rod and a short one into a "Y" and hooked up both halves. Seemed to work out ok. Had some issues with the flaps so I disconnected the servos and went without them. Got a lot straightened out and might head back out tomorrow for round two!

have not done maiden becouse of bad weather. but did some engine testing. Weight of the plane is 7.1kg and I have 6.7kg thrust. so it should fly ok

Like the sound of that 4 stroke, but for some reason I now feel cold...(was about 20 deg. C here in the Phoenix area yesterday!) What size prop was that in the run? Get some video of that maiden for us, and good luck though I don't think you'll need it, you will like the way it flies!

With my 35, I was spinning a 18/8 at 8k and pretty much stayed at half throttle and it moved along at a pretty good clip (and I like to fly fast too). I'm thinking you might get more rpm's out of a 18/10, plus have some more climb, just a thought anyway as I tend to start off conservative until I learn how the a new bird acts. I know 4c's like to turn slower with heavier pitch, but I would guess 6.5 to 7k as a sweet spot? For me, I will likely stay with the 18/8 until the engine gets some time, then maybe a 20/8 or 18/10. Im having an issue with it tipping up on take off roll, especially when there is a cross wind. Split one 18/8 yesterday and decided to wait for another less windy day, as opposed to paying the $20 toll for aborted takeoffs!

I agree, I would go with an 18X10 max. I was running a Magnum 180 FS on a Texan for awhile and 10 pitch was plenty of speed. 12 will be a little much for this bird. You should get more RPM's with a 10 pitch as well.
How much above sea level are you?
Good luck

i tried different props on my storch with the same engine. and with a 18X8 I got 7300rpm but only 5kg thrust, maybe a 18x10 is ok.
But the teoretical speed with 7000rpm on a 18x10 is 66.2 mph and with 5900rpm on a 18x12 it is 67mph, so the speed should be the same. maybe more thrust with the 18x10.
Think I wil try a 3 blade prop later. 16x12 or something. that will be right scale for the plane

got a video today. using a 16x10 3-blade prop. have tried 18x12 and 18x10 2-blades. But this 16x10 3-blase is the best so far. Think I wil try to get a biela 16x10 3-blade scala prop. got 7400rpm with this prop.

Mine is driving me crazy! It's ground handling isn't great, so much so that I resorted to using a gyro for take off. Fighting the fishtailing on the flight before adding the gyro took so much that I didn't catch the right wing wanting to become airborne too early, and when I settled it back down the gear bent, way to easily in my opinion. Got that fixed (even bent the gear farther fwd), added the gyro, next flight took of ok but then on landing, over on its nose it went again, bent gear again, dinged prop again, and the landing wasn't what I would call bad, a little bounce but pretty much in the pocket for normal. Guess I will try some different wheels, something with some give. I cant afford $15 a flight every flight for a new prop. The entire reason I got this bird was the fixed gear so I wouldn't have to mess with the gear on a warbird. Guess its not going to happen, even with non-retractable gear! Would like to maybe add some oleo struts but the whack-a-do, modern art looking bends in the stock design, to facilitate mounting the wheel pants, make that likely not possible. About to just gut the %&$* thing and move on.
Anyone else have this issue, or suggestions?

I had problems with nose over on landing today as you can se on the video.
But take off and in flight it is a dream to fly.
It is very sensitive on the rudder on takeoff. i have 70% expo on rudder.

Had a bad landing. One of the flaps servos was not working so i fly it whitout using flaps. Could not get the speed down enough for landing so it jumped up again and landed on the nose. The wheelpants went throu the wings
Fixed the holes today and putt on som prime paint. need to get the right color and it will be fine again. Mountet new servos on the flaps so they are working again.

Aichi-WaWa! Looks fixable, but not a quick one, that sucks! I haven't tried landing with flaps yet, perhaps that's part of my issue? Does this bird land better with them? I bought some DuBro treaded lightweight wheels to replace those Flinstone-hard stock wheels, and my next try will be without the wheel pants, and likely with flaps, as soon as I get the wire bent fwd again.

I love mine, guys! Flies like a big ole trainer! Here is the vid to mine again from our event almost two years ago.
Hints for take off: I use a DLE 30 on mine and about a 18 x 8 prop, I think. So, this baby is gonna have the torque! takeoff roll is slooow throttle advance and right rudder basically until the horz stab is flying and nice and level. the let her gain some speed and she'll lift right off without too much trouble. ***Watch the video for my takeoff rollout. pretty much just like any other warbird this size.
Hints for landing: This landing wasn't too hot, but I hadn't had that much time on her yet, honestly. Look at the deflection of flaps I bring her in with. I think she slows down nicely and settles right in. Keep just a little above idle for throttle and keep your descent even and not too long. Set her down right on the mains and let her roll out.
I did have and episode with a hard landing and basically did the same thing with my wheel pants. I did some MAJOR surgery to her and installed some Robart oleo struts on a really heavy duty mount and a long custom made fork with the stock wheels. A real pain in the arse, but WAY better for this sweetie! I don't see how you will ever use the wheel pants with non-stock wheels unless you have someone custom make you some TALL-SKINNY wheels. I have just a few mods to make with mine before I head over to Terry's event in Aubrey, Warbirds over Texas. If any of you make it to that awesome event, come by and I'd love to show you what I did for my gear mods.
Don't give up on her just yet. This is a great plane that ESM produced, but could have been even better with some upgraded gear mods. A plane this big needs some oleos!

I do like the way mine flies, hate the way it handles on the ground. You have any pics of that gear mod? I've been trying to dream up a way to get some kind of oleo and keep the wheel pants.I think with mine I've been coming in with throttle, and when the tail starts to settle it pitches the nose up, followed by a quick kamakazi nose dive, which always bends the gear. Thats why Im thinking flaps as well. Funny, everyone always tell me "no flaps, land faster...." but I think thats exactly whats causing my issue. Mine has a NGH 35 and is surprisingly overpowered for its size. I just want to fly without spending $17 for props every time! Nice job on the weathering by the way. (and was the gear modified before or after this landing?)

I plan on doing my little gear repair for the flying season in the next few weeks. I'll try and take a picture or two if I remember. It is a major overhaul and required me cutting through the sheeting, cutting out the gear mount plates, remaking some plates out of plywood and stacking several thicknesses of ply to support the Robart struts. The struts needed to be fairly extensively modified and I made a fork out of 1/8" strap steel that was welded to the end of the strut. One of my problems is I made the fork a little too narrow and is rubs on the tire. Need to take the wheels off and shave them a bit narrower on a lathe or drill press. I know, hard to picture without some photos. Should have taken some pics of the rebuild/mod.
Thanks for the nice comments on the weathering. It really makes it. I also have a functional bomb drop that allows me to do some cool dive and release runs! I put a smoke system in for some dogfight effects, but I'm a novice with snake and haven't got it working yet. Probably this summer. Got to get rid of this darned wind first!!

Oh man thats a pricey little trinket there! Will look great on your bird. As for me, Im thinking of just lashing together walmart wooden spoons for props until I get this gear issue sorted out! (I couldn't trust my thumbs with a prop like that on this one just yet!)

Guys, is the CG in the manual correct? I know that sometimes these ESM planes have the CG off in the mannual.
