RE: Winter project slated......1/3 scale Polikarpov I-16
Very nice I-16 !!! The I-16, Red Stars in general are some of my favorite warbirds. I've been searching for plans for a very long time. If anybody has any information on how to get plans, various color schemes, and whatever it would be much appreciated, either post it here or PM me. Thanks.
BTW - F4u5, I sent you a PM a couple days ago, don't know if the PM system is working or its taken a bit longer to reply.

That's the Gulag Acadamy of Aviation right? By the way, Egil is flying that big Mossie again after the extensive rebuild...pretty darn cool! I remember hauling that thing back up here from Bomber Field a few years ago...I think that was the first time I met the legend.

Yep, I got some pics from Egil. I am must admit I surprised it is airborne again given the impact it saw, but good for Egil and the Mossie, I am glad he got it back in the air to enjoy. Nothing beats a Mossie for a twin!

Jeff,
I have been seeking decent plans for the rat for some time nw. Can you advose me where I may obtain a set of the Mossimo Zuffi plans for the 92" version that you mentioned at the beginning of your post. Your help would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Darren

F4u5,
Do you still have that 13' Corsair? I'm building a Don Smith 10' Corsair and would just like to see yours. Can you post some pictures if you don't mind.

I have had several people ask. This is the only known address I have for the plans I have (Zuffi). Someone posted this on my build thread, and it is the same one I have on the order form I received for Zuffi plans:
Massimo Zuffi
S. Petronio Vecchio 40/2
40125 Bologna Italy
T-051-390731
This plane flies like any other....I just got "snake-bit". It will be repaired and fly again.

Jeff,
Thankyou for that. Sorry to hear about your plane - but they are all on borrowed time I say. I had a minor "mishap" with my Boulton Paul on the weekend myself.

Thanks Bill, I plan to repair the I-16 someday....got lots of projects ya know. The large MiG-3 will probably take priority over the I-16...love them Russian birds.
Vert.....she is banged up right now...lost engine power on the second flight as she landed in the corn. Nothing structural, but lots of cosmetic repairs to do. See post #27

OK, repairs on the Polikarpov are underway. The wing has been repaired, and I got in and fixed the cracked horizontal stab spar. Amazingly, the cracked horizontal stab spar was the ONLY structural damage to the airframe. Almost all cosmetic damage....do I know how to crash 'em or what......
The bummer is that the large glass cowl sustained significant damage. It was liad up by a friend of mine. I am debating on repairing or having a new one pulled, but at 17.5 inch diameter, it does not come cheap.
I will likely re-test fly with no new paint to give it yet another road test in flight.
More to come.....

OK, this is for Doug (fytrjok). After nearly 7 years, the Polikarpov has been repaired and flown again. The only structural damage in that bean crash/landing was a cracked stab spar and the wing bolt mount plate was ripped out. All other damage was cosmetic. I will admit it was a bit disheartening to lose this plane on the second flight. I came close to burning it several times, as it lay around in my garage all these years. I am glad I didn't. I just needed to wait until I got that wild hair to get it fixed; I did in 2013
This crash in 2007 was a result of 3 key factors:
1. I took off with low rates on the elevator, and had set in some down trim based on the initial test flight. I needed high rates for take-off (eveidently )
2. The engine lost some power on take-off, and really never knew why until this year. i found the pump diaphragm hard as a rock (but that may also be from setting for 7 years)
3. Summer 2008, I was still recovering from a severed index finger on my right hand that was chopped off in 2007, in the 3 blade of the #4 engine of my Lancaster. When I took off, there was not enough elevator, but my finger did not yet work well enough to make it up to activate the low-high rate switch in that short of time.
So, fall/winter of 2013, I got that wild hair and put the I-16 all back together. It is still in partial primer and missing some detail, but I wanted to go out and get it test flown again, before I spent anymore time on it. I got 2 flights on it 04MAY14, and both went well. The engine would not spool up (see comment on dried out diaphragm pump). I will get the new parts in the carb and get the I-16 dolled up again for campaigning.
The plane flies just like any other, really. But, landings can be a bit tricky, being so short coupled. However, if you are ready for it and keep power on, it works out well Here is some video of the first post-repair test flight. While not on tape, the second landing was flawless. The first flight, not so pretty, but no issues. Many people have asked me for these plans. I thought I had thrown them, but I found them. Let me know if you are interested. The plans call for a foam wing, but I drew in wood ribs on my enlarged version and have a built up wood wing on this 30% I-16
So, after 7 years in the refurb factory of western Moscow (Apple Valley), enjoy the ressurrection of the Polikarpov I-16 Phoenix:

Well done Jeffrey! But please don't sell it to Lora!!! I'm still trying to figure out how to keep the Kate from filling all the open space in my hobby room! Looks kinda cool up there in Owatonna...how about a trip to somewhere a bit more comfortable...perhaps Denver in a few weeks?

I kept asking you about every year if you were working on it... It was hard to not tell you, but I didn't want to pour salt in a wound, I figured the new test flight would be the best time to post it !
Glad you like it.

I have had severalpeople ask over the years if I have the stock plans for the I-16. I thot I had sold them, but I did keep a copy FYI. Here is the re-maiden of the I-16 in MAy 2014. The 2nd and 3rd landing this day was much better. Motor almost konked on the first take-off..
