Default Winter project slated......1/3 scale Polikarpov I-16

Well...just got back from Oshkosh. They had an original Polikarpov I-16, one of only 6 left flying in the world. Plane is all wodd, and the first cantilever monoplane wing fighter in the world.. I believe it had an 1100hp engine. It backfired and snorted on takeoff and fly-by's, and just sounded cool. They flew the full scale and man was it a sight. Looks like a Gee Bee with attitude. I have the Mossimo Zuffi plans. 89 inch wingspan, but of course, I have to enlarge it. I plane to enlarge the plans 34 percent to get a wingspan of just under 120 inches, making it 1/3 scale. The plans call for a foam wing. I am going to look in to foam cutters for cores, but I may just convert to a wood wing. If anyone is interested in this project, I could advies on wing cores if I can find a supplier.

Jeff, That is one of my favorite airplanes, can't wait to see yours. I would like to do a 1/4 scale sometime. By the way did you see my friends FG1-D Corsair while you were there? It won Grand Champion Warbird and deserved it. Don

I did see 2 corsairs, unfortunately, neither was flown during the warbird show. i counted over 70 warbirds in the sky at one time. What a sight and sound.

Jeff,
Does this mean you are not going to do the Gee Bee R2? I believe you said you were going to do the R2 in 50% scale. I love following your builds and can't wait to see either plane... or BOTH! Good luck!

Heavens yes, I am doing the 50% R2. I plan to have it done before fall, maybe by end of Sept. I will take on the I-16 when the snow falls. Thx.

End of Sept for the R-2? That's less than 2 months away, and not a single picture has been posted yet! Since I build at a snail's pace, I need to live vicariously through you!

I scratch built a 1/4 scale of the I-16 and have lots of flights on it. Mine is powered with a G-62, and weighs 27 pounds. It is a great flying plane and is very different than all the other planes at any fly-in. There is a video of it posted under warbirds and warplanes. You can probably search for it.

The beauty on the 50% GB is that the fuse was all prefabbed in glass, with formers pre-installed. All I have to do is sheet and mount the foam wings and tails, and mount engine/servos. It will test fly without paint and wheel pants.

Ruskmn....good to hear she is a good flyer. I have flown several GB's so I figured this would be similar. I'll e-mail you off line for some questions since you have built one.....Thx

OK, now I'm really curious. Regarding the GB, did you lay up the fuselage yourself, and if not, where did you get it? Can you post a couple pictures that give a sense of its scale?

Fuse was laid up by Bob moore of HAyesville, KS. I will be posting some pics on giant scale discussion forum in a few days.

You would have to order them from him. I can give you his address. I would be willing to sell mine after I enlarge from them

The I-16 is not exactly my favorite airplane, but it sure was unique. If you are looking for more information on this baby, check out http://www.nzfpm.co.nz/aircraft/i16.htm . I believe all the I-16's flying were built/re-built in New Zealand. I had the privilege of living there from 1995-2000, and seeing 4 of these things flying in formation. What a sight and sound! Anyway, check out the museum store for the video of "Warbirds over Wanaka 1998". Lot of flying footage, including take offs, landings, close up shots on the ground, etc. You won't regret it. The New Zealand dollar is worth about $0.50US, so the cost is reasonable. Make sure you ask for NTSC format. The website has some good downloadable free desktop photos, too.

Default RE: Winter project slated......1/3 scale Polikarpov I-16

Well, it has taken a few years, but I am well in to building the 30% Polikarpov I-16. Some things have changed from my original concept. I have opted for a wood wing over a foam wing, so I spent about 6-8 hours drawing in ribs and structure to build up a wing. Once I cut all of the ribs, W-6 thru ws-12 needed a lot of reshaping. So after I got the right wing panel framed, I took the other cut ribs and laid them up against the framed up ribs so that the left panel will be all set to go. I also did a lot of changes on the fuse parts. None of them were shaped quite right,, and I did not like the fuse building method (old control line style, i.e. half fuse built on to other half). So, I used the Ziroli method and drew in a fuse crutch and notched all of the formers for stringers. All total, I have about 20 hours in to modifying the plans. At this point, I have all of the wing and tail ribs cut out, as well as all of the fuselage formers. I am talking with a friend who may be able to lay up a glass cowl for me. I now have the right panel built and mostly sheeted, and have the center section built up with top sheeting on. Hope to have a full wing by next weekend. Here are a few pics.

The first is just the wing plans marked up. The rest are the right wing panel and center section. Also some shots of the finished outer panels.

Well, I haven't been diligent about posting progress. I actually forgot about the thread I started here. Here is a shot of the fuse getting started. Here is the crutch I drew in and the wing saddle attached, for 1/8 inch 3 ply. Then I got it up on the crutch jig and threw the formers at it.

In between the wing and the fuse, I got the stab and fin framed up and sheeted.

I then test fit the stab on the saddle and set the incidence. Nest, I glued in stringers, attached the stab and fin and got the top half of the fuse sheeted. I pulled it off the crutch jig and stood it on it's nose. Standing tall at a mere 5' 5". She's a portly pig. I am building the elevators now.

Well, I had forgot I posted this here. At this point the plane is all built and ready for primer. Here it is ready for prime.

If interested, you can see more build pics here http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...85&PN=0&TPN=12
