RE: ARF BUILDERS ONLY....PLEASE!
Here's mine. First one was my first RTF plane I modified. It was a Art-Tech Wing Dragon from Hobby Lobby. This plane I learned how to fly on about 9 years ago.
My old Hanger 9 .40 J-3 Cub (RIP)
The Hanger 9 Fokker DVII is complete, the Great Planes Fokker DR1 is under construction.

Sorry about posting the pictures this way, I'm tired of the screwed up picture uploader and other issues that RCU is having.

RE: ARF BUILDERS ONLY....PLEASE!
that is a 17X8 zinger on in that pic setand yes I could fly with that prophowever it is a power hog as it is heavy so instead i fly with a 15.5 X12X14 apc prop as seen here for flight.

Here's my youngest son Michael's BH Spitfire 40 ARF. We dida couple of appearance tune ups to it; The fin looked like a P-40 so we added a dorsal fin to smooth that out and put gear doors on the struts with Robart wheels using the hubcaps (intention being to shadow paint the scale hub onto them) and carefully applying the decals (stickers) to it. We re-shuffled the serial after noticing that the Hanna's airplane that this is marked like was 434!
It flies well on a little Tigre 51 with a JTec inverted muffler.
I think we have about 150 dollars into the whole model with used and sale prices, not a bad way to go with sport scale fliers.

RE: ARF BUILDERS ONLY....PLEASE!
This is my .50 size NitroPlanes Zero. It's powered by an RCV 60SP with a 15.5x13 3-blade APC prop (trimmed to 14" dia. for ground clearance). I made the spinner from basswood as I couldn't find a scale shaped spinner to fit the prop. I made my own rotary aileron drivers to do away with external control rods on the wing. I also made torque rods for the rudder and elevator to bring the control rods inside the airplane. I added flaps to slow the plane down for easy landings. The antenna wire is thin elastic cord and is an easy add-on.

Capt Ron.....you've seen a few of my arf's Ive done up...some pretty standard, some not so much.....like the German marked Spitfire.
Here's one I dont know if you've seen before. I had it at the first WOTR that was held up here at Loveair. The original "arf" was from cedar hobbies. The company is no longer in business.
The plane was supposed to be a B-17. The first 5 prototypes looked pathetic beyond belief. The 6th was better, but still far from remotely scale....hence why I believe they went out of business as no wanted something that looked that bad.
Anyhow....I was sent the plane to do a review and bash it into something that actually looks like a B-17 in an effort for them to sell more considering what could be done to it. I am no scale master builder, but I did a decent job back then(like what 5 years ago???)
So....the first two pics are the original arf as it came to me. The turrets, windows, nose section etc all looked like some 5 yr old kid had formed them using a kids bubble blowing wand. It had no provision for retracts or flaps. Heck.....the fuel tanks were in the way of anyone doing retracts on it. Really bad design. Also, the cowls sent were flat squared off things that looked like someone just wrapped balsa around a soup can. As you look at the pics.....yep those are supposed to eb the cowls and the props would have sat right in front of them.
Next post Ill show what I did to it.

RE: ARF BUILDERS ONLY....PLEASE!
So...seeing the mess I was given....I tried in vain for some time to find something that would pass for scale ish looking cowls. There is/was another b-17 manufacturer at the time called EAM.net. EAM.net does still maintain a website, but lists the B-17 as out of production....but they do mention they might make one by request.
The reason i mention them is that I had to order their "glass" pieces(aka the nose cone, top turret, ball turret, tail area, chin turret, cheek windows, etc in order to have something of scale appearance to try and use on the thing I was sent. The EAM plane was only 72" and the cedar hobbies was 80"...so a bit of a difference, but close.
I also tried to use their cowls, but they were simply too small.
What I ended up using was the tops to the Wal-Mart brand great-value koolaid powder. They fit perfectly size wise. I ended up making them affixed by rare earth magnets.
The entire plane wasw covered in aluminum foil tape from Home Depot. I used a dress maker wheel to imprint rivits from the back side while the white backpaper was still there.
I went the electric route for several reasons. 4 glow motors would have been a nightmare on something this small to keep in sync and using 2 strokes would leave nasty mufflers out on plain site. 4x tiny 4 strokes would have been too expensive. We would be talking 4x saito 40's or even wenkel 30's.
using electric afforded me the ability to bash in retracts since no fuel tanks were in the way. I used Robart 85 degree with oleo struts. Seriously, there were no gear mounts at all.
The cockpit area is one big hatch and thats where the 6x 3s 2200 lipo batts sit...in parallel. Props are 9x7x3's. I was worried about overall thrust due to the plane weighing in at 14 pounds, so used some decent brushless motors, but once it was flown, I was overpowered. But...thats much better then the other way around.
Anyhow..enough book writing...here's the pics as she is. I still have the plane and have no plans to get rid of it as it took a lot of time to do. Not Top Gun quality, but hey....Im still proud of her.

Randy,
your kit bashing skills are evident in all of your planes, and I've seen alot of 'em...............
The B-17 takes it to a whole new level............nice job! Bring it to Warbirds ove Denver in June, I'd like to see it fly.

Sorry I came on here to find out that I'm not welcome. I guess anyone that builds from a kit or scratch doesn't belong to this elite club of ARF assemblers. Don't forget the glue on the hinges.

Hey Barry........YOUR MORE THAN WELCOME DUDE I just thought I'd start something that the ARF builders could be interested in, share their differant bashing techniques and feel good about showing off their Pride and Joys............As you have said in some of your post..... "Didn't want to offend anyone" or start any arguments or anything of the sort. As I look back, I wish I would have named the thread a little differantly. If I could rename it, It would be........
ARF BUILDERS......HERE'S YOUR CHANCE!
Sorry you took offense.......I truly didn't mean to offend anyone, especially one of the old pros.

RE: ARF BUILDERS ONLY....PLEASE!
I think this might qualify in the spirit of this thread.
Started life as a Nitro Planes 90" P-38 ARF. Major modifications to a minor abortion of an ARF include;
- gutted boom interiors
- added Robart retracts to booms and nose, complete with scale size tires and gear doors
- added more scale rounding to boom bottoms and crew pod
- added to cowl bottoms to blend in with new boom shapes
- changed wing from a two piece to a three piece (with CF wing tubes) to allow for a permanent center section for booms to attach to
- reworked armament to more scale positioning of the guns and added missing canon
- added a scale cockpit and radio compartment complete with full body pilot
- repainted the entire aircraft and added invasion stripes in scale locations and sizes
- added panel line and rivet details as well as other surface details
- added aluminum foil to the turbo charger / hatches as well as many other details
- added hatch frames to the wing / boom covers
- added more scale framework to the canopy
- distressed and weathered the entire plane
Here is the build thread for all this and more if you would like to see the process. www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6913969/tm.htm
Going into the forth season and she flies great on the two Saito 100s equipped with Turbo Headers, even at just under 20lbs. Way over the 12lbs AUW on the box.
