RE: Fokker D.VII 1/4 Balsa USA
Thanks Guys!
I just ordered five 645MG's for the flight surfaces and two 82MG's for the throttle and choke. I got a 2700mAh 6V NiMH for the receiver battery.
JeffEE here is a picture of where she is at today. (btw: that's not the table i build on!)

Well the first flight is in the books. Just like all of my Balsa USA DVIIs it needed a lot of down trim. But I was ready for that. The NGH 38 cc four stroke ran perfect. Lots of power for this bird. And it was not too loud out in the open of the flying field. The one thing that gave me a surprise was how much of a floater this bird is. I had to go around on the first attempt. It is sort of nice, but I will have to keep in mind that my other DVII is not so soft on it's landings. Smiles for Balsa USA and this kit!

RE: Fokker D.VII 1/4 Balsa USA
Congratulation Jeff,
Thanks for continue to post with updates. Would you please post some photos?
I have been working on a Top Flite 86.5" Corsair ARF. Check it out. I started in the last week of January 2013 and had planed to complete the modifications of fiber glassing and other details in three months. I'm still working.
Well this 1/4 scale Fokker D.VII took six months so as long as I keep it under six months I'll be glad. Just can not stop making it more scale. Let me know what you think.

When I finish this I'll be getting my third scale Fokker D.VII down from the rafters and will be start another build thread.
Thanks,
Michael

RE: Fokker D.VII 1/4 Balsa USA
It seems like when the instructions get lean in some area I go out and search the forums to see how others have done it. In the case of the radio installation the instructions said something like "there are so many ways of doing this that we are not going to cover them here". Nice. Well I thought I would post a few pictures so others can see how I did it.
In the 1st picture you are looking at my smoke installation. Under the Dubro fuel filler I mounted a Sullivan Skywriter smoke pump. It has a 16oz tank in the compartment just behind the pump.
The next picture shows the tank and battery installation. One for the pump and one for the receiver. The switches (with built in charge ports) are on the bottom of the fuse.
On top of the tanks I installed my servo tray. I like the way the pushrods worked out for the G38. I really had to modify the Walbro carb quite a bit. The throttle and choke shafts are reversed and I ground off the throttle stop so the throttle arm would have more movement.
The final shot shows the lite ply to cover the whole thing.

I'm new to gas engines and I'm in the process of installing a DLE 35r in my Fokker D VII. My question is should I bore a hole thru the firewall where the carb location is? This is a rear carb engine and it sits only 3/8" from the firewall. My concern is air flow to the carb.
Thanks,

My feeling would be to bore the hole. I believe the static air inside that behind the firewall will be better.
Just my opinion. On mine, I had to solder a tube and add a vent hose to the bladder hole on my carb. to get the fuel blabber pump to work.

http://www.dle-engines.com/dleg0435.html has drawings. But could not exactly tell distance from standoffs to carb. I too would add more clearance with a hole. Many of my planes have rear carbs .

Well I ordered a radiator for my DVII from www.iflytailies.com. He uses a 3D printer to make them. I was a little uncertian about the sturdyness of the parts made on a printer. The package arrived in a VERY short time from Iflytailies, and the package was all smashed and torn. The post office really did a number on that! I thought it would be a bunch of little parts, being all smashed, but it was in perfect condition. Tough parts! The parts are easy to cut on the band saw, but melt on the belt sander. No problem, just sand by hand. CA glue joined the parts together very well. Here is a before and after of the DVII. I think the air flow should not be a problem, as the motor can still be seen. Nice going www.iflytailies.com

no, the parts come in the options of black or silver. I went with the silver. I thought the silver was a bit grey when I first got them. But looking at them on the plane, I think they are going to be fine. I bought 2 of the larger parts. 5 x 2.5 inches. There was enough left over to try cutting and sanding and so forth on the scraps. I think they will be a great addition to the DVII. I got a bit in a hurry, kid with a new toy ya know, and there were a few things I could have done better. But it's a Balsa USA, and so I will not loose any sleep about it.

Starting again.
Hello everyone,
I'm going to start another build thread of my Balsa USA 1/4 scale Sopwith Scout "Pup"
However, here now I'm going to show some current photos of my Fokker D.VII
I have had some issues with this bird and I almost gave up on her several times. Most of them with the Satio G-38 gas engine. I removed it and things got better.
Here are some photos. Let me know what you all think.
