Hey Guys,
I know there are lots of guys here running the XYZ 53cc Twin.... I just fired mine up on the LA-7 and it's running very well as it breaks in. I have a CHIgnition set to 28degrees, fresh fuel mixed to 25:1, and just killed a cup on my Align Starter getting to know the engine.
Is there a "Dean Wormer Double Secret" way to fire the engine by hand ? For the first start it seamed to want to be good and wet as there was fuel dripping from the carb after choking and priming it by bouncing the prop back and forth. Ignition off of course... Then use the starter to fire the engine.
I shut the engine down early on the second tank by turning off the ignition. I figured that would leave fuel in the carb for the next run. With a dead starter cup I tried to restart it by hand and now my shoulder is sore !! lol...
Are you guys hand starting the 53cc or using a starter? What's your sequence for easy starting ?
Joe

Joe mine needs lots of fuel to hand start.... with ignition on, choke closed, and throttle open full, then I flip it till it pops. Throttle to idle start position and choke open then it usually takes 2-4 flips. Also I have noticed it to be consistent with the first start of the day it won't idle until it warms up. The factory ignition lasted three flights for me so I purchased the RCXEL from AgapeRC, everything's been good since then. Hope this works for you

Thanks n8622t,
Just what I was looking for.... Just needed a process. Never a fan of hand starting and the bigger(for me) the engine the less I like it. Hate chasing my tail when I know it's close.
I saw several reports about the stock ignition going bad so I just replaced it and tossed the original one in the trash.
Thanks.
Joe

Hey Joe( that's got a ring to it( should be a hit ) firstly you shouldn't be running it on 25/1 try 40/1. im sure you will find your plugs oiled up and when that happens your wasting your time if your running the plugs that came with the motor dump them and put in a set of NKGs make sure your prop is at 1 o'clock get her wet and give her a flick remember your only starting one side 26cc so compression is not bad im sure your problem lies with the 25/1 mix i run red line oil and have had well over 400 flights on mine i also run that mix in my DA170 ect starting that tightens my rear up slightly as shes a 32x12 prop the XYZ is a great wee motor in fact i have ordered another one to fit in to a carf 2.3 ive bought just for pattern flying

Thanks Frank,
Yea, I usually use 40:1 but the manual said 25:1 for break in so I was trying to be nice to it for a gallon... Great point on the plugs. I think I changed them to NGK but I'll confirm. The plane was 95% done for a long time and I'm just getting back to it.
I'll report back after a bit.... For the next few starts, I'll be the one with a starter in my hand.... Gotta go down to Start My O Lady..... Once I get a little time on it I can start it with another hand..... !!!
Forgive me Jimmy.....
Thanks guys.

Joe as a after thought Ive just checked the XYZ site and there break in oil is 30/1 when breaking a motor in Ive found the best way is in flight let me ask you a question if you buy a chain saw or a weed eater do you start it up and let it sit on the ground for two tanks ( i think not ) when flying at half throttle there is far more air passing over the fins than will ever be gained than on the ground.
ZYX do suggest running half a tank of mineral oil to help bed the rings which i would agree with for the first start after that its 40/1 again all my motors run on 40/1 DA85 DA100 and DA70 plus DLE55 and the XYZ53.

Thanks Guys,
I'll change my mix tomorrow and fire it up again. No disagrements anywhere. Thought that was quiet a heavy oil mix.
Onward!!! Thanks.

Stick, mine came in at 27lbs but I did the same as you and stripped, painted and detailed with full cockpit and Sierra gear. But you already know that. At 27 lbs it still flies well and slows down nicely with the flaps and thick airfoil.
Zrooster,
I balanced slightly forward of the recommended CG in the book. I can't remember the recommended number. I think it was 145mm from front edge of wing center. Google the manual for the ESM D9 .pdf and it will come up. This plane as all FW-190 do not like to be tail heavy. It gets real pitchy.
Heres a pic of the plane after its second paint job.

Yeah, I should have realized that I could probably just download the manual and get the CG from there. Thanks for the input, I'll balance forward of the recommended.
