Or go to the hobby store and buy the RLM color you want from a Model masters bottle. Paint your own chip, then take that in. Getting the paint to match is actually really easy. Then you can get the sample bottle of latex mixed for like $3

Warbird,
Those are great paints but at 3oz per can you would be buying a lot of them for a 50cc bird. They do have accurate colors though. Personally, I like the convenience of being able to go down to he HW store at anytime to get whatever color I like for 3$.

Thanks Guys
Warbird Al, have you used those colors?

Jason
That is an EXPENSIVE book! What is the Mongram book you are referring to? As far as spraying, I have everything to spray, restored/painted sereral cars, but my sons crap has completely taken over my shop since we moved, so I guess I'm just being a little lazy.

Honestly, I have never sprayed latex paint. Only time I did was house paint with a Wagner power painter, with a huge tip, and it was most certainly not a flat, as is smooth, finish. Do you have to use a bigger nozzle in your gun for latex, or just thin it way down? Does it layout flat, or does it have a lot of texture? Seems to be the way things are going, so I guess I need to give it a shot

Ran across this thread where he used the Kylon camo colors, which is what brought me back to rattle cans for this plane. I think it looks pretty darn good. I read it as he emptied the cans into another container, tweaked the colors and sprayed with airbrush. My airbrush is too fine to do a big plane like this, maybe a combo of airbrush and touch up gun, or may be able to backtape the camo patterns and spray it right from the cans??

Latex sprays wonderfully, through a touch up gun or an airbrush. Thin it down to milk consistency with windshield washer fluid. Yes, the blue stuff. Add some Floetrol to it that you get at HD also. This helps it to lay out really smooth. This is the way to go. Cheap, user friendly. It is the only way I finish my warbirds now. This FW 190 D was finished just this way.

Ragtop,
the books are expensive and seem to be going up. The Monogram book is out of print. Merrick book Vol I is out of print too. Everything seems to be crazy expensive. If you can get a used copy it would be the most affordable. VGs idea would be the best. Use Modelmaster or Tamiya paint to make your paint chip samples then take it in to the the HW store and have your colors matched.

I use a touch-up gun. Thin the paint with water, or some use alcohol, flotrol, or windex to make it smooth and flow out.

Roy Vaillencourt has a great article written about latex usage.

VG, nice FW......

heres a pic of my FW D9 using Valspar latex color matched. BTW, use exterior paint since it is more UV tolerant.

A picture of the label on the HD mixed samples would help us guys who don't have the color chips.

Here is the sample I got from HD of the original green paint on the ESM D9. It's a perfect match.

Yeah, they are pretty expensive when you need several cans for a larger airplane. I am not talented much in the mix n spray area so I use the rattle cans. These paints work well and look good. On my ESM 190 D9 I had to do some repairs and they are real close to the original colors. The dark green for some reason came out somewhat shiny, I havent hit it yet with flat clear. The light blue and grays are awesome. I used the blue on the CMP 109 and it looks great.

If your plane is a gasser you don't need to fuel proof the paint.

Dowmer, I love those colors on your 109. Nice work

Vertical , that is a nice paint job too. What shade of blue is that on the markings?

Thanks. The blue was just a bottle of latex I found at the local craft store, that looked like it matched my picture. I was not taking it really serious, just tried to get it close. The craft stores are great for small amounts of latex. You can mix and match them to get what you want before you make a chip and take it to Home depot.

Some pics from a warbird meet this past weekend. The FW 190 sure is a sweet plane in the air. Lost a magnet on my hatch, and it popped open mid flight!

Dgiatr
Curious about your experiences with Fiala props? I placed an order for a couple 3 blade props about a month ago, and have hear nothing back from them
Understand the 3 blade props are manufactured as order, and I'm OK with waiting, if I know they are being made. Three emails over the past few weeks all unanswered, and never got a PP invoice

Wondering if you order directly from them? How long did it take, and did you receive a pay pal invoice from them and pay that, or did you just send them money? I'm a little hesitant to send funds if they won't confirm the order, or answer emails

Thanks

BTW, how's the painting process coming along?

i ordered directly from them once. i payed after receiving a paypal money request. and as far as i remember i didnt have any serious delays, all the other times i got fiala props from my local rc model store.
i didnt start painting my esm fw 190 d9 yet cause i am doing a little practice with my cmpro bf 109 repainting with my new airbrush . i have never used an airbrush before so i prefer to do a little practice in another plane for the first time. i havent finished my bf 109 yet, it still needs exhaust painting and some weathering........

OK, thanks
Curious if your local hobby shop stocks three blade props? I'm looking for 19x16s for a P-38, and a 24x16 for the Dora

109 is looking good!

It has the Skyshark spinner. This is a smaller D9 than the ESM. I need to re paint the spiralschnauze. It got scuffed up, so I painted over it.

No, not a peep. I called, but no one there spoke English, and I cant find anyone around here who speaks Czech. Next time your at the hobby shop, would you mind asking about 18x14x3 props?

I really like the higher pitch options they offer, thinking they would be a good fit on an electric.

Thanks

Mission accomplished!!
i am quite satisfied with the result after my first contact with an airbrush.
My CMPRO BF 109 F repainting has finished! (although there are still some details to take care of -change place of the pilot, kill marks on the rudder, nose-guns) but i will not spend time with that model anymore.....Now its time to put some color on my fw 190 d9!

Dgiatr,
real nice paint job! I think you will do a great job on the D9. Too bad you have the muffler hanging out the left side of the 109. She still looks nice though.

Looks good dgiatr!

You all know what I'm going to ask....wait for it.......wait for it..............

Dgiatr, what kind of paint did you use?

No I haven't tried the Latex yet, BUT, as the weather was the pits over the holiday weekend, I got quite a bit done on the Dora. The motor is mounted, tail feathers and tail wheel done, fuse servos in, and tail rigged. Finishing up the "homemade" main gear prior to fitting the wing to fuse. As the summer months are upon us, and time is short, just going to focus on putting it together and putting some flights on it as is. So many cool paint schemes to choose from, I what to enjoy painting it, and not feel rushed

Keep posting those pix, keeps the rest of us ( at least me) motivated to get this one done!
