A 4.8v pack is usually more than enough voltage for the electronic ignition. I'm regulating my LiFe battery to 5 volts and it works fine.

Look at your ignition. Many of the newer ones will handle a lot more. I think up to 8v.
Also, spark is not your problem. Too much voltage on older ignitions is hard on them long term, but does not create problems with getting your engine to run.

Just FYI, the manual for the XYZ 53 STS engine specifies 4.8-6v for the ignition and states that 6.8 volts is the highest it will take. I think 8 volts would likely fry it as I've heard of a lot of guys using a straight 2 cell LiPo and poof.
Check whether the voltage is right or not (4V-6.8V)

Thanks to all! I pulled the carb and everything seems to be in place...fuel poured out of it when I opened it up. Haven't checked the reed valve yet, but if that's good, then not sure what else to check on the carb. Could be an ignition problem... The one thing nagging at me, though, is the fact that very little fuel seems to be getting into the cylinders. With the carb dripping fuel, one plug was bone dry and the other was just damp. Furthermore, the only time it ran at all was when we gave it a shot of gas or starting fluid directly into the cylinders. No argument that I need a different power set-up for ignition, but that may not be why it won't start...

Thunder, thanks! Checked and looks like they're hooked up correctly. Still messing with the carb. Opened up one side and everything was in place, but haven't checked the reed valve yet.

New to the forum just purchase one of these will like to run electric motor, suggestions on the rimfire 65 cc and rotoma 50 cc were noted. Any comments on this motor:

This is my suggestion. Do not skimp on the power plant on this plane. It's a large aircraft, expensive, and the last thing you want is to loss it due to throwing a magnet or having the motor seize up. Suppo products are bare bones and cheap.
Hobbyking has the Rotomax line. Those are far better quality if looking to shave a few dollars.
This plane could fly on an E-flite power 160 on 10s spinning an apc 19x10 prop. The Hangar9 80" or so spitfire is spec'ed for that, but is lighter.
Honestly, I would stick with a proven power system.
The rimfire 50cc or 65cc has the grunt to fly this plane with authority.

Thank you very much for the feedback. Did you set it up with the ZTW Gecko Series 150A HV (High Voltage) Brushless ESC OPTO (No BEC)? what was your experience?

When I built my 190 D9, I didn't know about ZTW gecko esc's. However, I did place one in my 87" ESM ME-109G. The esc has worked flawlessly. My 109G is also outfitted with a rimfire 65cc. I have a gecko 120 HV in a high voltage EDF setup and it handles the load without hiccups

Hey All,
I can't find my manual anywhere!
What are y'all using for throws on your control surfaces?
My bird is ready to go but I want to make sure my throws aren't over-board!
Thanks,
Dan

Deadstick,
Manual calls for 25mm elevator, 20mm aileron, rudder 20mm.
FW are pretty pitch sensitive, especially the D9 with the long tail moment. Be careful with the elevator. I think I don't have any more than about 3/4". Use as much rudder as you want. I like a lot for taxi etc. ailerons are effective so recommended throws are fine.
Also, make darn sure you are not tail heavy in the least. CG swings aft when the gear comes up due to the big forward take of the gear, so check balance with gear up to make sure the plane doesn't go tail heavy when the gear comes up. I found out the hard way and almost lost my bird on maiden except for some quick thumbs. I prefer a little nose heavy on FW. I think they fly a little better. If not they get pitchy.
Heres a pic of my ESM bashed bird this weekend at the field.
cheers

Many Thanks!
You did a great job on yours! I just did mine stock. I balanced her twice now to be sure and she balances exactly at 151mm inverted with the gear up! I used the stand from VQ models to balance her! That stand was the best investment I ever made in this hobby! Amazing Tool!
I'll get some pics of mine after work and post them.
Does she handle grass runways?
Thanks again for the throws

Dan, all I've ever flown her off is grass. Handles great. Not sure how she would react on pavement but I assume very well. The long fuse handles nicely on the ground, but it does like to weather vane into the wind if there is a strong wind with the long fuse and generous tail.

Here is a video from my 3rd flight after I moved the CG a little backwards. It flies amazingly and comes real nice for landing!

End of story on my ESM Dora. Last flight and I do an simulated landning on a new field. All seems fine and I decides to do a landing. Goes around but the wind force the plane to the side of field and I decide to do a new approach.
Trottle up and give the bird a little elevator and beginning turning right when left wing snapps of totally.
