G-Pete. I for one am glad you're back. We have been fumbling along in the dark. I did, however get her up on her feet for the first time today. Gear works as advertised and seems to hold air ok. Did a preliminary balance check using my calculation program from measurements and found I will need about 6 oz weight added to the nose to balance at 6.75'' which is about a 15% static margin. We then balanced using the pvc stand as per Tom's method and that equated to about 7oz on the stab to lift the nose. Should be good to go. Still waiting for my pitts muffler and to do the dummy radial & cockpit etc. Other numbers are: weight - aprox 21lbs, wing loading - 37.27, wing area - 1299.2 and a no flap stall speed of 30.2mph!
Capt G help me out, you added 6oz to the nose to balance at 6.75", but added 7oz to the stab to lift the nose? Im confused[] Are you adding weight to the nose or the tail? I know, I cant help it[&:]

Never mind!!!!!!![&:] I just read step 11 in the manual...Capt G, you and Tom are probably both laughing at me hysterically!! That's ok, I'm used to it

Back on track now

Glad you caught up. After all my engine box mods and the heavy muffler we did the final balancing today. Required 2 oz added to the tail to balance correctly using both methods. Accomplished initial engine runs. Idle aprox 2000, high about 7000 on 35:1 dinosaur oil mix. We changed the piston ring to one of Bowman's so break in should be quick. After the ist run and cool down it started the 2nd time with one flip!

Tom,

Does your method of balancing by the Wing Tube (without the wings) account for the wheels being retracted?

Thank you,

Oriole
Yes. I adjusted mine so it flies right with wheels up and also with them down, then I checked/balanced it without the wings using this method and it required about 7 oz. on the tail to make it level. 8 oz. will give a little safety margin.

Oh, just in case it's not clear, the balancing weight on the tail is only temporary, don't add 7 ounces permanently, just stack some weight on there to check the balance and then remove it.

That's certainly good advice. Some of my friends have had problems using the no-name plugs that are shipped with DLE engines. I replaced mine with a NGK CM6. I also used the spring that DLE recomends in the cap to insure good contact. My low needle is about one turn and the high is at 11/2 turns. Break in prop is a Xoar 22x8 which will eventually be a 22x10 and /or a 20x12 3 blade.

Looks great Capt. I sorta wish I had started out using a DA or DLE. My Taurus install has caused much wasted time and effort. One thing I noticed in your pic....your spark cable is not tied down. I always tie mine to the airframe so it wont flop around and fray. You may be planning to do this. On my latest Edge with DA, I neglected this and after perhaps 70 flights the cable is trash.

Looks like your are about ready to go. Good luck on that maiden! Cant wait to hear about it.

Some of my friends have had problems using the no-name plugs that are shipped with DLE engines.
the reason for that is seen in the red tip at the end of theelectrode on the DLE plug. thats rust. if ANY plug
has a removable tip/electrode, check it. and clean as nessesary. even new ones. or bad things will happen.

Hey G-Pete,
I kinda got into your build review late, however I have a WH Hellcat ready to fly. I hope to test fly in a week or so. I found it insteresting to see some of the (very few) problems you guys have worked through. It seems everyone had the same ones as I did. I am going to have a show and tell mini review at our club meeting this tue. night. Lake Dallas Falcons Club 7:00 p.m. 1st Meth. church lake dallas. I will post some pics and a flight review soon.

Howdy Dave. Two primary issues. Mine is the 69cc single with an integral radial mount. Because of the weight of the engine, I'm using the short cowl. But that puts the prop out of the cowl 7/8" heavy. So, I have cut a circle out of the original firewall to allow the mount to reach my new firewall about 9/16" back. Also, the stock wrap around pitts does not come close to fitting and a lot would have to be cut from the bottom of the motor box. So I'm having Jtech make a custom wrap around for it. Even if I cut the bottom front off, it would require A LOT of material lost. Might be ok but can't get comfy with that idea.

If I'm not mistaken, the twin's have the same radial mount. Great engine, but on the heavy side. But, I bet it wont eat rod bearings like my DA-50 just did. Granted, the DA has been the most trouble free I personally have had. If I had it to do all over on this plane I would have gone for the DA50 or 60, or the DLE55, and looked at extending the motor box. Personally I don't like long standoffs. Just my humble opinion there. Might work in this case, might not be worth it.

Good luck on yours. It seems to be a great plane.

Tim

Maiden flight report. Easy steering on the ground and needed only a little right rudder on takeoff. Flew around with the gear down for awhile getting her trimmed up and then slowed down to try the flaps. No real pitch changes with 1/2 or full flaps. Aileron and elevator throws were good as recomended but I increased the aileron expo to 45% for the second flight which was better. Also dicovered that the plane was slightly tail heavy so I removed the 2oz from the tail for the second flight which improved tracking quite a bit.The plane flys quite light. I think I will now add 3oz to the nose and it should be perfect. The plane is quite fast with the 22x8 Xoar and I flew around mainly 1/2 - 3/4 throttle. 24 0z tank is good for about 11-12 mins with reserve at these settings. First landing was good but floated, even with full flaps. When I set up for landing on the second flight I noticed a pronounced roll moment and it appeared that only one flap came down . Put the flaps back up but there were rolling issues and the subsequent landing was a a little rough and off runway. Found out later that the right flap servo had broken loose and the flap was banging around which caused all my difficulty. Only cost me a prop and a broken wheel hub. New wheels and prop are on order and should get some in-flt pics this weekend.

Maiden flight report.
Congratulations, you are the first one I have heard of to maiden the plane.

I would very much like to hear about what happened with the flap servo, perhaps you could contact me by phone. I'm at 817-430-0107.

I have never experienced what happened to you and if there is something I can add to the manual to prevent others from encountering it I will, but I need to know how it happened.
