Default fly Fly Models 71" Hellcat

Wanted a quick conversion of an old model but that is not going to happen . Home made battery boxes are done and I forgot that on the hellcat wings sit really far up on the fuse (short nose ).
This makes my home made batterys boxes obsolete lol , work for nothing !!![:@]. Ihave outlined the cuts and clearance I will need to allow the baterys on the nose .
Good news is I figured I can still go thru the fuse firewall , stop short of the wings and long as I can achieve CG without adding weight .
before I can really get started on the bash so much of the fuse firewall was needed .
Plans that I will execute on are:
Reinforce fuse and cut slots in firewall so batterys can easilt go in and out.
Full interior kit
retracts moved inward in a more scale position .I will not be cutting or reducing the wing span .
I will add a tricolor paint scha

Thanks Greg . I stole this plane on ebay about 6 years ago from a direct from China seller calles willshobby . I paid $68 knowing they wanted $55 for shipping and that it was a CMP knockoff . Alex from Ak models was selling Fly Fly at one time and soon realized that the quality was inferior to CMP and eventually stop selling them .
Simple things like no wood in the fuse where the wing dowles would lock thru the fiberglass lol .
Or no wood in the tail beyond the last former leaving the fuse to "tin can"
I cant believe I spent the time to cut , drill , glue to battery boxes and I did not realize my motor would hit the boxes on the firewall oh well , plan B today will go into effect !!.
Wait to you see the interior kit , there was a guy named Luke Zolner who was cranking out kits for about $22 .The incredible detail was Top Gun Quality and yes they were $22 .
I bought a Corsair kit and Hellcat interior , drop tank and canopy.
He chimes in occosonally on rcu and still enjoys the hobby.
Kostas you can get the real CMP Hellcat from Ak models in Texas or Nitro Rc or perhaps because you are in Greece you can buy direct from another supplier .
hey Greg do you hae any sources of the flap details , I can seem to tell if they are a three part flap or two part flap , thanks
Lou

Hi Lou - just got your private message, but was not able to load pictures in my reply for some reason, so I decide to answer you on this site.
The Hellcat that I built was a CMP model originally set up for fuel. I converted it to electric by cutting a hatch on the top side of the canopy (see photos). In most of the planes I build that need to be converted to electric, space and accessability is always a challenge. I therefore never reply compleletly on placement of the main lipos to help me balance the plane. That said most of the time, I am able to place the battery tray where the fuel tank was to go which brings me close to where the plane needs to be balanced. It is the separate battery I use to power the servo that its placement helps me balance out the plane. I have yet to add extra lead to a plane for balance. Hope this answers your question.

Ron

Ron , thanks a ton , that is really helpful and i will looking into the top hatch for cutting options .
The batterys are big , but with top hatch access I do believe they still fall 75% or more ahead of the CG .
Thanks , feel free to post any pics as yours have been very helpful

Glad the pics help - I think you will be fine with the cg as long as you can balance the cg with the servo battery. Let me know how it goes.

Ron thanks again . I am going to try the top hatch version and also play with the esc as an weight option with the flight battery .
Greg as usual you always deliver , that is all i needed , i could not tell if that triangle was deep into the flap or just a surface detail , now I need to see if there is a slot connector between the two flaps like the Corsair .
Thanks again buddy

I will chime in here, ha! I want to offer contributors to this thread some free stuff, if you have a CMP Hellcat and post a picture of it and would like some parts I may be able to help you. I know I have at least 1 scale canopy left and some other parts, maybe 2 or 3 drop tanks. I'll have to go through my stuff, but if there is interest in this thread I would like to help some people out. Just send me $5 to cover shipping, that is it. I will dig through some boxes and see exactly what I have to give away, I'm not making any more new parts, so don't ask about that.

The drop tanks look great on the Hellcat, I have a picture of one on my Hangar 9 Hellcat.

Right now I'm just finishing up some projects and then I will be starting on a full scale project, a Fokker D.VII, so my modeling will be cut down quite a bit.

I'm not trying to hijack LDM's thread, so keep the discussion on the 71" CMP/FLY FLY Hellcat, thanks...

The fixed portion between the flaps is something of a pyramid shape Lou. Here are some pics of the area on my Hellcat. I am using a cable between the flaps to tie them together. You won't find a connector between the flaps on the full size Hellcat as they are actually a slotted type flap and are operated by torque rods inside the wing. A bit more complex than I wished to attempt on a 1/8 scale model so I simplified. I would be happy to send you a PDF file of the wing plan for my Hellcat if you think it might help with the mods on your bird.

Greg thanks great pics !!
Chad , as well thank you , both your pics and Greg make it very simple to see what I need to do .
I have the Holman plans from the late Hal Hunprey , he was a nice rc friend building this plane the same time Luke was building the plane . I bought the plans off of Hal so I should be ok with the wing , I an not going super scale but I do want stand off scale .

Luke thanks for chiming in , been a long time my friend , I have the original interior , drop tank and canopy new in bags ready to go in this plane .I can tell you how many times I have been offered some seriuos cash for the parts , especailly the interior kit .

Thanks for the help guys , hope to keep this post moveing fast

Well made some progess tonight , I cut the battery doors , onto plan B batterys in the fuse . I would have been done so much faster but the motor mount screws from Durbo were so screwed up !!! Very disappointed in Dubro in what I know is always quality .
I did something differant this time vs all the silly work I normally do . I tape the wings together so that I could drill the wing mount tabs thru the firewall before the motor was in .
So I staretd with a long drill bit , mounted the wing , went into the wing thru the firewall with a long drill bit and the wings are set dead on .
Wings are not glued permanantly as much work is needed on them but they do have the mounting dowels installed . Funny , there is no provision in the kit for the mounting dowels !!!
Batterys hatch will be cleaned up and hindges and magnets will be added .
Small hellcat is my scale refferance
