Now the fun begins!!!!! I was skeptical that he would deliver I must admit. I'm glad John has been able to keep the Iron-Bay program alive and well. You have just purchased one of the best flying warbirds ever. Have fun building and flying your new T-28. Mine came out perfectly balanced without having to move anything around. Even Frank Noll said it was oine of the best war birds he had ever flown at the time. He put the maiden flight on mine a few years back. They fly like a very large trainer. Course the T-28 was a trainer LOL. If you need documentation I have a book on T-28s that is no longer in print, and I used Dave Platts drawings for panel lines and rivits to do mine.

It's good to see the planes are available but it's too bad on the price, there just aren't enough hobby dollars. If it was $800 I'd go for it, but not $1275. I know the T-28 is bigger, but is it really worth double the price of one of the Yellow Aircraft warbirds? I'd really like to have one of these but I can get a Yellow P-47 w/gear and a new DLE 55 for about the same money. Lets face it for another $420 you can get a Comp ARF Corsair.

I totally agree,
I'd love to have a big Byron T-28 and would go the $800-$1000 for it but would not probably spend $1275 . I built a Byron Gee Bee a few years back and it was a great kit of good quality, but there's more work though than most modelers realize . Buying a Yellow Aircraft or even a Comp-arf is probably a better value and a better choice as you won't have a problem with the availabilty of spare parts. Maybe Yellow,Comp Arf or even ESM will come out with a big T-28 one day.
Just my 2 cents,
paul

I guess you really have to like the T-28. I like to build. My two cents.

I got started on mine this weekend. It actually goes fairly quickly. I am just about ready to glue the formers in the fuse. So far, the engineering in this kit is first class. Everything fits really well. I did sand the corners of the 3/8 square on the root ribs to account for the radius of the glass and any extra resin that didnt allow for the 90 deg. square of the block to mate against the fuse. At first my main formers had some tension. When I sanded the corners of those blocks, the root ribs slid further out (only slightly) and the main formers then fit like a glove.

I do not know if you have built these types of kits before but make sure you sand the inside of the fuselage and clean the fuse with alcohol as in the manual, Before you glass any formers in place. Hope you enjoy the build these are some great kits and have a following after all these years. Thanks Donzie

BJ,
A great alternative to glassing the formers in would be to use Aeropoxy [from BVM] Actually, I think Aerpoxy is just Hysol which is available from McMaster supply. It's a 2 part that's easy to use and bonds the formers to the fuse very well.

Thanks Paul. That is my plan actually. I am going to tack the formers with CA and use Hysol and skip the glass cloth resin routine. I saned the inside glass with 60 grit and wiped down with acetone. I confirmed with BVM that Aeropoxy/Hysol will work, and they said it will work great. Should yield a cleaner looking build as well.

For those like me who have more time than money check this out as an alternative, especially if you like to build.

http://www.scalercstuff.com/#!__master-page-2

Same size as the Byron and if you cut your own formers can be had for a lot less.

Making some good progress. Have all the main formers installed with Hysol and the speed brake has been fit and installed. I followed the plans/instructions in regards to the speed brake, and it works like a charm! So far, this build has been very fun. Ready to start the wings- they are the next step in the instructions.

Could you tell us if the wings are injection molded with the aluminum spars already installed like the old kits or have they switched over to hot wired foam cores.

They are not injection molded like the P-51, P-47, Zero, They are wire cut foam just like the Hellcat, Corsair, AT-6 , and T-28 kits. I wish they had the foam injection molding machining working but it has to be replaced because of the age. Ironbay tried to use it, but because of age it broke down when it was up and running. The technology has change on the equipment I think that is what John at Iron Bay had relayed to me. Hope this helps. Looking forward to this build. It makes a nice plane. Thanks Donzie

Hey Brian,

The big girl is looking good. Bring it down on the 27th and we can work the removable stab option if you want. Easy peasy!!

Just need the stab cores and shucks, stab tube and sleeve and the tail section. we can get the holes cut in the stab cores for the sleev, you take it home and finish it up.

What engine are you thinnking of?

rcmigpilot,
The T-28 wood kit lists for 800 bucks.
Am I missing something as a Ziroli 'typical' plans, cowl, canopy is around $150 and a full wood kit is around $400. It seems like the 'complete' T-28 kit should list around $550 plus it appears the T-28 is a short kit (no planking wood).
