Hey Chad,

Yeah I am but the yellow I picked out was WAY too bright. I need to find a flat and darker yellow.

Well, I haven't posted much because I really haven't been working on the Baker much. The reason is, my dad flies a 737 for USAirways and I decided for Christmas to build his plane. This is a 1/144 scale 737-400. My dad was the reason why I became a pilot and the reason why I love RC so much. I've been building a plane every year of what he has flown. That list is:

Bac 111
727
DC-9
737-200
737-300
737-400

Anyway, I decide to take some pictures so you can let me know what you think. Of course the first one isn't a model, it is one of my dad.

Okay,

So I'm back on track. I needed to clean up the bottom hatch that had 4 large cooling wholes for a huge muffler that went inside the nose section. I couldn't get the engine to run right so I just put the pitts muffler on the side and everything works great. I used balsa to cover the holes and then covered the whole thing with putty. After "some" sanding, I was able to get it smooth and it only took 1 coat of primer.

At this point I wanted to try the new yellow because the other one was WAY too bright. It took me an hour just to tape the whole plane off, but of course, after pulling the tape, you can see, this is still too bright. I'm going with a dull yellow that I know will work much better. So, of course I'm waiting for it to come in.

I decided to start having some fun with this project. One of the many challenges I feel is to make the plane look weathered and beat. This was going to be a different approach than some of my other projects. This plane never saw combat, but it was used and abused. So, no flak damage, but the panels were taken off a bunch and you had a lot of guys climbing all over her so with that said, I wanted to have a lot of the paint rubbed off and "chipped" off in areas I felt would have had a lot of use. Using a 000 and 0000 pads and soapy water, I started "sanding" away at the paint. I was really happy to see all those rivets just jump out. I still want to put rain streaks, mud, and your typical weathering, but to me the plane is starting to build character.

I have a question out there. Does anyone know if the Martin Baker had external fuel tanks for pylons for bombs? I would like to add a bomb/fuel tank drop as one of my maneuvers for Top Gun but can't seem to find anything on it. If you have any documentation or "proof" that it did have, please let me know.

Thanks!

Hey thanks! I am using Tamiya spray cans. It goes on great and it is easy to weather! I am going to compete in Pro-Am Pro at Top Gun.

PJ, when yourshooting your paint, are you using an airbrush or atouch up gun? My last bird I painted I used a airbrush. Lot of work for a lil ol paint brush. Oh yea come to think of it, our buddy Fred built this one also. 1/4 scale Mig 3

Awesome!

Yeah, I use the rattle cans for the large areas but at the transition points I go with the airbrush. This way I can manage the transition line and keep over spray to a minimum. Yes, I have to paint outside or my wife clearly reminds me that she lives there too and needs to breath....sooo okay...

I think I finally found the correct yellow. It is Tamiya "Camel Yellow". Its hard to tell in this picture, but the one on the to is actually really brighter than the one on the bottom. The one on the bottom has a bit of "orange" which really lowers the brightness. Granted, I just painted the bottom one during the picture, so as it dried, the shiny really faded.

I was so happy how the fuse. turned out with my stencils, but not so much with the wing. I have NO idea what I did different, but when I pulled the stencil off the wing, it pulled all the paint down to the silver base coat. I had to re-do it again. After talking with Dennis from Kerby's Custom Graphics, we agreed to just try to do a decal. I have to tell you, he was right. Putting the decal on looked just like the paint. The rivets show through and I was able to scuff it up as well. I used the same size brass tube for my rivets and put a tad bit of silver paint. This simulated the paint flakes on the rivets on the decal as I was able with rubbing steel wool over the paint.

I needed to put the fuse. back on the wing so I could simulate the paint flakes correctly. I wanted more around the canopy area because that is where the pilots and ground crew would walk more. I think I'm getting the effect I want. We keep getting closer.

PJ, your refirb is looking great. Best of luck at Top Gun.

I have always loved this plane or some reason. I still have my Orig Dan Parson plans. (.60 size) and recall so well how I wanted to purchase the Giant Scale bird from Check 6. It looked so cool. Nice job Fred Menna. My flying skills were not ready yet, but I wanted his plane bad. I finally saw it fly at Warbird over Delaware maybe 4-5 years ago.

You have all the pictures I have so only add is some history notes from a plastic model kit plans:

"Martin Baker MB5

Martin Baker is most famous for the invention of the ejection seat. Before that they made the first jettisonable canopy in British service. But Martin had always had a desire to design and build a fighter aircraft and the MB5 was the culmination of that dream. Martin Baker was a valuable manufacturer of parts and equipment for the British Air Ministry, so his plans to build a fighter were seen as a distraction from his main function. Add to this the fact that Martin Baker was not an established and "accepted" aircraft manufacturer, and it you have the reason why Martin Baker fighter development was not pursued by the Air Ministry more seriously. Had the MB5 gone into production it quite probably would have been hailed as the finest piston engine fighter ever made!"

I'm subscribed.

PJ You are doing a fantastic job on the old bird. I'm not flying anymore but still will do some building. If anyone wants one of these let me know, I sure could build another one. Again Great Job!

Hey everyone. Thanks for the kind replies. LOL I was beginning to wonder if anyone was following the thread for a while. Anyway, I was able to work with the new yellow. OOOOH how I HATE painting with yellow. No remember, this is before I dull it down, but as far as the color, I think we are much closer. I was able to work on the front cowl a bit. I still have detail work to do, but I wanted to test fit it after I made a few small changes. Its really starting to come together I think!!
