So I finally broke mine out of the box. I had to take a look!
I managed to find a Saito 300 twin with twin spark and carb and traded for it. Then I found a great deal on a Solo 3 blade prop and hub set. So now Im really stoked and I had to place the motor in the cowl just to see how it fits. It is wall to wall motor in there! The prop is 24in dia and looks the part. Im pretty sure this set up will not require any additional nose weight, its pretty heavy metal as is!

No Im waiting for retracts so once I have that we are moving forward with the assembly. Ill probably start with the engine install and work back from there.

Thats a good weight for that plane. I havent weighed mine but I'd swear it feels lighter than my TF P40.... Now that I have the maiden out of the way, on to some more paint work.. Good luck with yours and get some pics..

Just picked mine up also. Going through the box inspecting the parts. A build thread would be a good idea. Thought about starting one myself as I'm sure a few slight modifications will be in order. Fire when ready

Frank Noll flew the prototype with a DLE 55/ apc 20x12 prop. It flew it very well and very fast.

Thanks Thunderbolt, back in the 90's I had Frank fly my CG Ultimate up at Olean, NY when he was flying for Ohio RC, I told him I wanted a 3' off the deck slow roll.... and he did a few times... both directions. Man that boy can fly!!

Warbirdman, start it up if you like, and I will join your thread if you don't mind? I will be a bit though - very busy with work right now... heading to the hobby shop right now to pick it up though.

Hoping to test fly tomorrow..........

I've owned several Top Flite planes, I was disappointed in a few things on this one:
1) The rear end is WAY too low. I originally lowered the tailwheel and it looked much better, but I couldn't get the doors to work. I finally gave up trying to change it.
2) Flat monokote seems to highlight every imperfection underneath it. My plane has alot of rough spots in the wood.
3) My biggest complaint is the fiberglass trim pieces at the tail. I wish it had plug-in horizontal stabs. I know the rear linkages would be exposed, but I think it would look better without the fiberglass block. I added some trim tape over the seams at the tail. I think it looks a little better.

Complaints aside, I'm pretty happy with it. Being a Top Flite, I'm sure it will fly well.

Some information about my plane:

DA 50 w/ recommended J'tec pitts
12 ounce flight battery installed beside the fuel tank...............took 12 ounces of nose weight to balance (I installed 8 ounces in the cowl and 4 on the firewall)

23.8 lbs

FYI:

I'm sure other people have figured this out, but I haven't read it anywhere. The aluminum joiner in the center wing section is where the plane should balance. You can loop string around the joiners and hang the plane to balance. I don't know why they don't mention this in the instructions. It's tough to balance a 24 lb plane on your fingers.

Looks great! The only issue I found so far is that some of the hardwood blocks - like on the servo hatches - split easily and had to be replaced. Started gluing in cockpit pieces.

Flight Report:

I test flew my corsair today. I'm very happy with the way it flies. The recommended CG seems to be right on. I found the low rates to be too low and settled on 1/2 way between low and high for all of the controls. The airplane needs 2-3% UP elevator with flaps. The instructions tell you the opposite. Overall, a nice flying plane.

The throttle servo quit working on the second flight (at full throttle). I flew the plane for 15 minutes until it ran out of fuel. I made a pretty good deadstick about 50 feet short of the runway with no damage. The corsair has a pretty steep descent with no power. I thought I could make the runway, but came up short. I had a new Hitec HS-322 on the throttle. I've taken it out of the plane and checked it over. The connector is good, geartrain is good.......it will not work at all. I don't know what happened. Luckily it didn't cost me an airplane.

I'm thinking about selling my Aeroworks Ultimate to fund the TF P-47 or P-40..............

Good job - thanks for the flight report. We have had some throttle servos quit also and have since gone to digital DS821s with no further problems. Did you use the main gear doors and if so how did you operate them? I have started putting on a few rivets , don't know if they show up.

I've never had a newer servo quit. I'm using the same servo on the retracts. I don't know whether to trust it or not. I will have to buy another servo to replace it (I don't have any spares). I think I will spend a little more on the next one.

I didn't install the main gear doors. I honestly didn't want to put any more money into this plane. If there was a simple mechanical way (without pneumatics), I would be all for it. I think the plane would look much better with the main gear doors. I would be very interested to see someone get them working.

I was curious how the da50 would do in front of 24 pounds. I've owned several da50/dl55 on 17-19lb aerobatic planes. The dle55 makes noticeably more power than the da, but I had a da laying around. I think it's just right.the plane had good speed and would pull large loops.

This is my first giant warbird. I may have to sell off another aerobatic plane to buy the p-47 or p-40.
I can't wait to get the throttle servo replaced and do some flying.

DS821's are known problem children in larger models and have vibration and gear train issues and there's no way I'd use one in a gasser. Even JR/Spektrum recommends against it.

What would you recomend as I am using a DS821 in a Pilot 30% gasser with a DLE 55 also. I don't want a throtle failure for sure!!

Thanks,

What size prop are you guys using with the DLE 55 in this bird? I have both a Xoar 22X8 and 22X10 on hand. The 22X10 is perfect with the DLE 55 in my Aeroworks Extra 260.

Capt G,

The yellow trim is a nice touch. Is the yellow monokote, or did you paint?

Thank you,

Probably the best pilot to use would be the BEST PILOT of Pappy Boyinton . It ia a full body pilot that would fit perfect for the Corsar . They are a little expensive but well worth it. $65. unpainted and I think $160. or $165. painted.

thanks Bob
