A little more progress...seems to have taken for ever and a day to get the canopy something like..... Tail-wheel in and functional, cowl mounted to suit the quadra 100 and panel lined....wing is built and sheet-ed except the bottom due to waiting on the main gear.....new pilot also arrived.......what more could a man want.......

I love the pilot!...where'd you get him from?...
I've just finished installing my cockpit, and am fitting my DA85 before I finish sheeting the fuse, then its back on to the wing.
keep up the posting!
Cheers

I am unsure if to go the da / zdz route myself......some how just dont fancy the Quadra 100.....probabley because I have never run one before.....

Too funny Sheriff! (I won't call you Frank, cuz it's going to get confusing between the Franks!) I didn't realize there was a UK Kimberley... I thought the only other one was in SA.
I decided to go with the DA85. Mainly because I got a good deal on one, and it puts out good power. Great work on the canopy BTW, I'll be playing with that after I glass the fuse. I've got the DA located on the firewall, and the cowl clamped on currently, to make sure my cockpit door is going to line up with the panel line that it needs to on the cowl.
I may however be sidetracked a bit with the reception of a little 60" Balsacraft Mk1 Blenheim, that I'm going to put retracts and convert it to a MkIV Bolingbroke...even after promising myself I wasn't going to get carried away on it! Lol
cheers

that Q100 is a work horse you will not be disapointed with is power and performance 10 to 12 hp dependind on with or without a pipe, they are smooth all through the power band.these engines are world camps in their class.very good choice.am enjoying your build, very clean.

that's what I wanted to hear, many thanks... I have a "Bennett Built" silencer which just sits at the rear, all nice and tight....I have run the motor a couple of times without the spinner back plate and appears to be smooth....but I have just mounted the back plate and it seems to be running a mile off true when hand cranked over....touches at the bottom of cowl but approx 4 mm away at the top....im sure the back plate is plumb....I need to run her with the back plate on to see our she performs before I commit to installation...

A little more progress on the Typhoon, fuse nearly completed with the majority of riveting completed but I am now "baffled" on the best way to duct air to the motor. That huge air-intake is enormous but the majority of engine is hidden behind the spinner......experience / installation ideas are more than welcome to save me more head-scratching..

Do you think it will be an issue?...I'm not too concerned with mine, because the head of my DA85 is pretty much right in the midst of the airflow. Just make sure exit area is larger than intake area, and you should be good to go! I'm currently waiting for glue to setup so I can finish up sheeting 80% of my fuse, then I'll sheet the wing center section and mate the fuse to that before finishing fuse sheeting and fabricating wing fillets...
Cheers

I have the Tempest with a Quadra 75 and never had an issue with the cooling. Like George tells you make sure the exit is larger than the intake.

You have put my mind at rest, many thanks,. I may well add a little ducting as suggested on another site direct to the head from the intake, but form the sounds of it no issue if I dont....

appreciated,

Frank

Frank, curious as to how you made the diffuser within the chin intake, it looks superb! I have the Vailly Tempest to build and chin intake would be the same.

Where did you get that grouse pilot from??

cheers

Looks great Frank!!! What method did you use for the flush rivets? They look outstanding.

Pete , Rob,

Thanks... the air intake is a pot noodle rim with a old metal table leg in the center, simply drilled with piano wire pushed through then silver soldered up to the inner. I made a fiberglass insert for the pot noodle rim for the piano wire to bed into then glued the noodle rim on the outside so you are unable to see the protruding wire ends.. The noodle rims are as close to the real thing as I could find, right size, concave and a lip round the perimeter as per the original.........

The flush rivets are done with a 40 watt soldering iron with brass tube in place of the original end on the tip......all easy stuff.... The raised rivets are done with a small syringe and neat pva glue. Will add some more pics later......I use 1/64th chartpack panel line tape for the for panel lining where required then rivet away.....no marking, just a good eye!!

Regards,

Frank

Sheriff, I agree you should have no cooling issues with this set-up. The Typhoon, like the P-40 have the large intake and I have many flights on P-40's with no cooling issues. The plane is looking great.
