Yes going with the Sierra gear for sure, not sure which engine though. I favor the Quadra 75 or 100 but here in the UK they are not popular or easy to obtain. I May take a look at zdz / da, but would prefer the heavier engine,.. see what comes along

RE: Vailly Typhoon Build
Looking good Frank
I have almost complete the Vailley Tempest........that needed almost 7 lbs of ballast to balance, it will be interesting to see how much ballast you will need considering the nose is 2" shorter.
Best keep the tail as light as possible.

All very tight round the rear end [X(][X(] Managed to complete rudder, fit tail and fin ensuring all work remains as light as possible..

I knew the recommended cockpit by Dynamic was heavy but not that heavy!!!! Its a beutifully crafted piece of kit but lots of dollars for something you dont see a lot of.... They also recommend cutting away at the crutch to fit it in, didnt fancy that at all [X(] [X(],

Hes a modified bbi pilot. He has very little body left as I have cut most of him away to save weight...poor chap []

Great looking cockpit Sheriff'!
Just and observation, the pilot looks to be sitting too high, seat raised for landing sure, but thats possibly a little to much.
Once you get the gunsight added, pilot fighting position would see his eye level center with the glass reflector, actually quite low.
Many pilots mentioned that when the shooting started, they couldn't get the seat low enough!
Just a comment before you glued everything it and it was to late to adjust.

Yes, I agree David, he was basically placed in for a quick glance to see our he fitted. I will ensure he has the right position / posture when the time arrives,

Next job in line is to purchase an engine..
I am looking towards a zdz 80, what do you think?
The plan shows a Quadra 75 which I would love due to the weight and reliability, but finding a newish one is almost impossible. I often wish Zenoaha produced a nice single of this size, sure it would do well.
Also considered a Z62 and reduction unit, all new territory to me, but the weight up front would be nice.
Experience / thoughts would be appreciated,
Regards,
Frank

Sheriff
I have a 3W80 in my Vaillley Tempest build and it started first time straight out of the box ........plenty of power so should perform well...........my Tempest comes in at around 48lbs so it will need plenty of mumbo to haul it around.
cheers

The ZDZ 80 is incredibly strong.
I have seen it in a C-Arf Mustang, and compared it to a zenoah GT-80 in a Vailly Fw 190. See below.
Side by side.
It is much , MUCH, MUCH stronger than a zenoah GT-80. I think you would be happy.
If you stand behind the GT-80 you feel a strong wind. Behind the ZDZ-80, there is a HURRICANE.
The C-Arf jumped up in the air after 5 meters (15 feet)
So, you can either put in a not so strong engine and some ballast.
Or a very very strong engine and lots of ballast.
The sum of engine weight pluss ballast must be the same.
Let us say it needs to totally weight 4 kg in the nose.(To balance at correct CG)
Let us say engine A is 8.1 hp and 2.0 kg (ZDZ 80)
And maybe engine B 6.0 hp and 2.8 kg (GT-80) (Dont know Quadra data)
So in case engine A: 4 kg in nose (2kg engine and 2 kg ballast) AND 8.1 Hp
And case engine B: 4 kg in nose (2.8kg engine and 1.2 kg ballast) AND 6.0 Hp
=> Same weight in nose and 2 hp more for engine A.....
(A VERY heavy spinner plate and ballast just behind spinner is good....)

Excellent feedback gents, thankyou..
Love the sound of the reduction on the z62, awesome This would be ideal but I am concerned with regards to power, I have a G62 in my Ziroli P47 at 33lbs which goes well but Id be hesitant to put one in a much heavier airframe.. Im looking towards the zdz or 3w for the sheer power aspect.
Kwik, thanks for your intresting methodoligy, do you know the weights of the composite mustang?
Spitmad, wish you well with the maiden, always nice to get the first one out of the way!!

Frank

RE: Vailly Typhoon Build
Frank,
Nice work! Very happy to discover this thread as I have on order a "short kit" for the same plane from a chap here in Canada. I have wanted to build a Typhoon for a while & when I saw the offer for the kits for a very reasonable price, I decided to buy one. Now I'm looking at the total investment for a 97" plane & wondering whether to proceed. Part of my due diligence is looking at suitable engines. I decided around 80 c.c. would give a power/AUW ratio in my comfort zone & did the attached chart comparing a number of motors that I know are available. Could not find any info. on Quadra engines. Does anyone have any data or know of other engine possibilities?
Looking forward to seeing more of your build.
Cheers,
RB

Hello RB,
Not done a lot more to be honest..waiting on the tail-wheel retract so I may complete the fuse up. I'm also pondering on the engine.. I will update when more progress as been achieved.
