RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Here's a plastic modelers' thread on Spitfire landing gears. Looks like they were not all exactly the same.

The struts are very nearly perpindicular to the ground and the wheels have a slight toe-in at the bottom. Please don't do it like Top Flite show it! The retraction angle of the full size airplane is 96 degrees. I believe TF show a 90 degree retract which is why they have to have all that non-scale ''splay'' in the gear in order to make it work. I can send you the pertinent sectin of the Brian Taylor plan if you like which shows the scale angles.

Got a question. I am seeing quite a lot of variation in the wheel/tire cant angle on the Spitfires. Which one is right? Or are they all right? Wheels canted inward, outward or perpendicular to the ground. I am a bit confused, C.O. and i need to get our Top Flites as close to scale as we can.

One quick question! Can the slight toe-in help the wheel fit flush in the wheel well?? I agree with you on the TF setup. The wheels do fit flush in the wings, but just don't look right when they are down!!

Thanks perttime. I worked on making some bent axles today. This looks better with the gear down but as you mentioned Sonny when the gear is retracted the tire is going to stick out of the bottom of the wing slightly but i don't think it will be noticeable during flight. I do like this approach and brings the gear closer to scale. What do you guys think of this?

I like your setup!!!! That give you more on the tire on the ground. I just pull the wings down for the TF Spit build and you are right. The wheels do not fit flush in the gear wells. Now on the ESM Spitfire, Troy Built has a set of electric retract gears for that bird and I will be going with that setup. I am in the shop today because old man winter has come back![][] Rain, winds and cold temp!!!

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Sonny,
I imagine the toe-in (technically it's negative camber but you know what I mean) might actually make the wheel less likely to fit properly in the wheel well. On the full size Spit (early Marks anyway) they simply pushed the wheel up through the top wing skin and covered it with a bulge in order to get it all in the wheel well. On later Marks of the Spitfire they let the wheel hang below the wing's surface and bulged the gear door to cover it instead. The later marks may have had less camber as well in order to get the wheel flatter in the wheel well but I'm not certain of that.
Steve,
Check the CD that I sent you. It may have the Taylor plan on it. If not I will send you the wing sheet which shows the gear strut/axle arrangement.

Thanks for the info. I have sat in on wind test of some of the Boeing model and was shock to see just how much of the airflow around the wind mess up. So if any part of the tire is in the slipstream, the top speed will be hurt.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
So, has anybody modeled the full flaps on the spitfire including the auxiliary pieces under the fuselage?
I working on doing it on my model, but I was wondering if anybody else has done it and how they did it.
there's a lot of variables to take into consideration.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
PURE UNDENIABLE INTENSE SPITFIRE EXCITEMENT!
Like I'm sure every Spitfire enthusiast I was let down by the negative Burma Spitfire reports. Then I got MAD! "Burma Spitfire Gate" has now become greater among Spitfire enthusiasts than all the other "gates" combined! The Emperor has no clothes!
Google brought up over a half million (500,000) results when Googling < burma spitfires: the inside story >. Even more results were provided when I Googled: < burma spitfires hunter cundall vows to continue > The truth is now too obvious to too many people for it to be suppressed by totalitarian forces much longer. As has already been suggested, this is part of the culture war for Western Civilization values so beautifully inspired by the inseparableness of the Spitfire/Churchill (please see Churchill link below) connection to world history.
"Normally" fantasizing about being in the cockpit of a twisting, turning, diving, looping, hot fighter plane under war combat emergency power is suggested near the end of my posts to, hopefully, help inspire the kind of courage for truth so evident to whom so much was owed by so many to so few in Western Civilization's FINEST HOUR!

Congrat on your 1st prize!!! She is a keeper. Can not wait to hear a good flight report on the maiden flight. That is one thing good about this hobby, you never stop learning!!!
My knees will not stop shaking until your Spit is back on the ground and we read your flight report!!!

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Regarding eth ESM 72.5" Spitfire gear - Sierra makes a beautiful drop in retract for this plane. Other options as mentioned are CJ and the ESM electrics, but I have not heard good things about either generally.

Hi Brothers;
Look what big brown drop on my door step today!!! This is the engine that is going in the ESM 72.5 Spitfire. It is a PTE36cc gas engine. The retracts will be here next week!!! Now to start looking at the servos for this bird. With the start of good flying weather, work in the shop have stop for now. When fall do come back again, I will have everything in place when the build start. I will post my build update right here, when I start. On the gears, I went with the electric retract from Troy Built. They said this is the set that was made for the ESM Spit. I will post pictures when they come in!!!
Stay tune!!!

Sonny. That is a lot of engine for your ESM Spitfire. I would suggest you check all the fuselage seams and maybe re-enforce them with some fiberglass cloth. The firewall also.
Cheers,

Cheers,
We are both on the same page!!! When I open the box and saw how big that engine was, the glass light came on!!! This is why I will wait for the fall to come before I start the build. The firewall will be a must!!!
Thanks for the heads up!!!
