Question - What were the red stripes for on the leading edge of some Spitfire wings? I've seen pictures of some that had 2 stripes on each wing and some that had 4 stripes.

Not stripes but patches doped over the gun ports to keep debris out of the barrells. Some Spitfires had 8 machine guns, 4 per wing, while others had only 4 machine guns, 2 per wing. (Those with four machine guns also had cannons.)

I know, I know I should be building but... I've been reading. Found a nice 'different" Spifire read, not a lot of technical stuff but more like a life history, thus the title a biography

http://www.amazon.com/Spitfire-Biogr.../dp/1843545276

Full of little known facts like did you know the Merlin engine was NOT named after the mythical magician?

Only $5 in half price books.

Default H9 Spitfire Maiden Flight

Finaly got to do the maiden flight on my H9 Spitfire this past weekend. I think this is the smoothest flying warbird I've ever flown. Here are a few pictures of the event.

I like the photos, and also the 3 warbirds staged together. Amazing how we seem to find many other warbirds at our local fields. There are days we have had nothing short of a warbird fly-in just from members showing up to fly their WWII iron, well wood in our cases.

I need some help. I received an aluminum spinner for my Spitfire and the bolt was too short. I've got a longer bolt but the cap is a little too large for the hole in the spinner. What would be the best way to enlarge the hole without ruining the spinner?

Thanks for any help.

Don't enlarge the hole. Just chuck the bolt in a drill and shave down the head a little. I have done this many times for spinners.

I was going to suggest the same thing. In the past I have used a drill press and a file to do this. Most bolts will have a big enough head to work with. Good Luck!

Agreed, You can use either method. I normally will put it in a drill also, or rotate it on a bench grinder stone. Use light pressure and check fit often.

Or simply get a longer bolt adapter from Dave Brown Products.

Not bad, I was contacted by the doc today and am scheduled for my next surgery on Sept 16. If all is okay the stint will come out while I sleep. If not, they did not say. Are you planning on being at the field Saturday?

Glad to hear you're comfortable.
