Lifer,
You will love the way the Hangar 9 Spitfire fly. The only bad thing about this bird, it like to nose over on landing alot. I do not like the way the landing set on this bird. I know one of the brother have post that the full scale plane had the same problem. Other than that, the Hangar 9 Spit is a keeper. Right now I am laying out all the parts for the build of the Top Flite Spitfire kit. Now that I have time to build, I am going back to the part of the hobby I love!!!!

Jet, very interesting information. My new Spit has been modified to land as well or better than my modified PZ 109 that lands perfectly except for the embarassment last time out. The key to victory is larger tires and adjusting the wheels further forward. I can't wait for better weather to try it out. I am making the same adjustments on my new Hurricane that should be ready to scramble next week.

Out.

jet22,

I have to confess....I cheated. I shimmed the rear of the retracts so the nose-over is less likely. Also used one of the new Spectrum A2000 retract servos and set it up for a 6-second retract cycle. Looks cool!

Test flight Saturday or Sunday.

I have a Platt Spitfire, that needs to be rescued, I live in Columbus, Ohio I acquired this Spitfire at an estate sale, it is 50% built, the fuselage and wings are sheeted up and no attempt was made to build retractable, if there available. I think it can be built and flown. There is a Jr servo in the wing for ailerons. The plane came with original box with plans and decals, I suppose It's all there...I don't want to ship it because it will probably be expensive, If you live around central Ohio, and may be interested please email [email protected]. my name is frank..thanks

Hi mad web tv scientist, thanks for the reply so my spinner with added weight should stop in any position in its circuit when spun and i will be compensating for the cut outs with the added weight, at the moment it will only stop in the position shown in the photo.

Not as impressive as some of the other offerings, but here are some photos of my H-9 Spitfire. Mostly of the engine (JBA 15 with aftermarket muffler and replacement carb) and the radio install.

Not yet test-flown. Likely to occur this weekend.
How do you like the JBA 15?

$69 for the Hobbyking Spitfire.

Over 700 flights on it now.. best aircraft I have ever owned in 34 years of RC flying.

And I also like my Parkzone Spit with retracts...

25 years of fun with lots of glow plug motors, But now I love the clean simplicity of electrics..

warbirdracer,

The JBA 15 has a checkered history. It was broken in per the manual. I then installed it in a plane and flew it a lot last summer. Because it had been equipped with a way-oversized carb it was unreliable and the mid-range was impossible to set. The mufffler leaked excessively. Finally, the conrod broke while in the air.

A nice guy named Jim at Agape racing replaced the rod and checked it out for me. I then repolaced the carb with one for a DLE 30. (The old carb was then put on a 43cc engine where it works fine, now.) The muffler was replaced with a J-Tech unit.

It's about 500 rpm down from the original set up but runs fine now. The Spit is about 10 percent smaller than the first plane so it should be fine. In total, I cannot recommend the engine; between the purchase price and the muffler and carb, I have over $400 in it. Would use a DLE 20 if I had to do it all over again.

dubs, thanks for your post. Actually the cutouts are irrelevant. I finally understand what I am failing to communicate. All you actually have to do is grind away/add weight so that the spinner has very little or no tendency to move when you put the spinner on the balancer no matter what orientation you use.

Please let me know if this is "clear as mud" as my high school English teacher used to say back in the middle of the last century.

"Out" as real fighter pilots used to say back during the "big one."

Lifer,

Thanks for the feedback on the JBA. I had another person once tell me the same, but was looking to swap some 60 size glow warbirds to gas. I have a DLE-20, and you are correct, they are powerful engines and carry the 60 size birds through the air fast.

If you use the DLE 20 in a .60-size warbird, the 16x8x3 prop makes for a good flying plane. I use the MA and is runs smooth, quiet and powerful.

I am also rebuilding a Pica Spitfire. I have done some research on other threads for CG and found somewhere between 41/2” to 51/4” was the recommended CG. The CG shown by Pica apparently is not correct.
I hope some of our fellow Spitfire Brothers that currently flying Pica Spits, will pipe in and let us know were there plans CG at.

lovehydro,
I just found a review that was done back in Nov. of 1991 for RC Modeler that may give you some info. See the link below.
http://www.rcmplans.com/issues/reque...-111991-1.html
Hope that help!!

hi mad web tv scientist, thanks i now understand that the cut outs balance each other out, i had trouble getting my head around that, i still don't fully understand why? but i have asked around and what you and other guys have said are the same so now i will try and balance as you have described. Thanks again.

hi lovehydro i am now in the process of balancing my Pica 1/5 Spitty with everything i can think of and a heavy spinner on the nose and a DLE 55 mine with the wheels down balances at 6 inches back from the front of the center of the wing, as the plan but,
i asked around and remember that i had seen in other blogs that the C.G. was wrong.
Thanks for the description jet22b it has most likely saved my aircraft and now have confirmation of the correct C.G. my Spitty at the moment is 27 Pounds ready to test fly but it now looks like i will have to add a few Pounds more to get the C.G back to
4 and 1/2 inches.
Hi. moto-x i would go for the 4 1/2 inches like me and i hate adding dead weight.
At the moment its 27 Pounds and the wing loading 47 oze per sq. foot not to bad.
Did you have fun fitting the retracts what a pigs ear to get them in, the main spar is right in the way it was badly designed from the beginning i had to cut the main spar and build an extra box section spar in front of the retracts.
