Hi all!

I have been following this thread since the beginning.This isa great thread, I would like to join the brotherhood.

I have built 3 Spitfires so far. I am beginning to feel a sudden urge tobuild another one, but I have 3 ongoing projects I need to finish first. Here is some pictures of the ones I have built so far.

I’m thinking for my next plane I would like to build a Spitfire not an ARF but wood. The problem is there aren’t too many options for this plane in wood. I would like it to be around 80� to 88� wing. The only ones I can find are Dave Platt or Brian Taylor. I’m not interested in the old Dynaflite kit. Are there any other options out there? I wish Top Flite would make a GS Spitfire kit.

As I explained in a separate thread, I actually have a weight problem in my TF Spitfire, which would weight 12.5 lbs if I balanced it without any other changes. So I decided to try a couple of simple mods to reduce it at least down to 12 lbs. One of them is to rebuild both elevators. Here's what I found:
1) Each finished elevator is currently at around 30 grams (a little over 1 oz) including monokote and paint.
2) I seem to be able to rebuild them using stock material at 10 grams including monokote and paint, which is 1/3 of the original weight.
3) As you mention, the original cores alone weigh 8 grams each, while the ones I built from stock balsa are 2.5 grams each.

In my case, I'll also make hollow tips, instead of using balsa blocks, because I need to reduce the weight as much as possible. It seems that this change alone will be saving me some 150 grams (40 grams at the tail, and 120 grams at the nose). I'll keep you posted, as I intend to finish these new elevators during the weekend.

I recommend based on some Brian Taylor planes I have owned and flown; his 83" or 69" Spitfires would be a great choice. Plus the guys whom built them say they are top notch plans and builds. One P-51 I owned was purchased second hand from the friend who built and flew it for 10 years, I flew it for 4, now another friend is flying it. All of us have flown it with the YS 110-120. I should add I was not easy on the airframe either.

Agreed, contest grade balsa is stronger and lighter. We used it in the aft sections of our pattern planes for this very reason.

Hey #1;
How is your TF Spitfire build going??? Are you going to glass then paint or MonoKote the bird??? All work have stop for me, because I came down with the flu!![&o] This stuff is bad!!! Was to start the glass work this week, but this flu is kicking my "A"
It won't be long we will have over 200 Brothers in the Brotherhood. Do anyone know if we have any women in RC that fly or love the Spitfire like we do?? When I first move here to Washington State back in the late 80's, I took a tour of Boeing plant and the lady who gave the tour, told us about her mother back during the war, ferry B-17's from Boeing Field. She said her mother love that plane!!!
Hope to kick this flu soon, so I can get back to building. It won't be long, good flying weather will be here!!!!

Many years ago, I was the manager of a really big LHS, and one night some people came in who were obviously from England. I had my Dynaflite giant spit on the counter and the grandma of the group started critiquing the out-of-scale features and sure enough, she was a Spitfire ferry pilot. It was such a rush talking to her about Spits. She looked just like Rosalyn Carter but had the accent like "Q" and it was so cool. I picked her brain for almost an hour before she finally left.

Once in a while an older British gentleman will come out to our field to mostly observe since his eyesight won't allow him to fly much anymore. He said he worked on Spitfires as a young man, particularly the MK IX. The other day he was checking out my PZ Spitfire and asked if he could touch it. I told him he could. He put his hands on the fuselage next to the tail feathers and he said it was great to see that PZ got the roundness of the fuselage right. He said that most of the models of the Spitfire Mk IX have squared off fuselages back there, which is totally wrong according to him. He then went on and told me some stories about his youth and the Spitfire. I love talking to those old guys.

We as young people miss a lot of history this way!! Yes we can go read a book, but to sit down and talk to someone who was there is priceless!! I think this is way War Bird Airshow are so big!!! You get to see and hear these birds on the ground and in the air. Some time you can run into people who had hands on and can tell you the ins and outs of these bird. My hat is off for the people who flew and die in these bird. This is history that we can never get back once it is gone!! To all the people who find these birds and get them back into the air, I also say thank you. The best way, I think, to see a Warbird, is not in a warm hangar, but in the air!! The sound of the engine coming to life, for me, take me back to the time when these young man would climb into these bird and fight for our freedom.!!

Vasek, Here is what the DLE 20 looks like installed. I cut the original firewall out, made a new firewall from quality 3/8 marine ply and moved it back 1 1/2 inches. I then dilled and pinned the firewall using .060 carbon fiber rod and finished it off by fiberglassing the firewall and engine box. Inside the fuselage behind and aft I made some mods to strenghten the fuselage. Fits like a glove.

Speaking of replicas, here's a full size one that is based local to me. Aircraft has a steel tube/aluminum fuselage with wooden wing and tail surfaces, Allison powered. Performance very similar to the original. Beautifully constructed but the lack of rivets and panel lines on the flying surfaces give it away!

The BT looks like the way to go. Has anyone built this plane from the Traplet short kit? Vic’s fiberglass fuse and wood wing looks nice but I would like to build an all wood plane. The retracts look like an issue there are not many companies making them for this plane of this size.

The DLE 20 looks good. What retracts are you using? I’m thinking about getting the Hangar 9 to satisfy my need for a Spitfire until I can build a bigger one. Has anyone put the XYZ 20cc engine from Valley View RC in this plane?
