Flight Leader, unfortunately not. :-(
It was too windy for my taste. The whole fleet is parked and the spitfire is hanging from the
basement ceiling so I can admire it while working on my winter project.
It's getting a little bit too cold around the nose now (-8c) to enjoy it.
On the bright side, there is always next spring 6 month from now. :-)

Happy building & flying.

Default One Less Spitfire

I regret the loss of my H9 60 Size Spitfire; I had only enjoyed flying my Spit about 12 times, a great plane, put a lot of work in it bashing it out to be a better than usual ARF offfering; on its final and fatal flight after leaving the ground I had no control, could never get it to fly level, it kept pulling up and it finally dove in nose first, a total write off.

Post mortem revealed a partially stripped Elevator Servo that had a flat spot that caused the elevator to get stuck in the up position, but when you pushed the stick forward it would go down, but it would get stuck again when you pulled the stick back, the plane kept porposing up and down and at one point when I was making the turn to try and get back to the airstrip it went inverted and it dove straight into the ground; I don't believe the servo was damaged as a result of the crash because the plane hit nose first and both the Elevator and Rudder servo tray and pushrods were intact and still attached to their surfaces and functioning.

Part of the problem as to why the servo stripped was my fault because I didn't provide enough of a hinge gap when I put the plane together. During the post crash investigation I flexed the elevators and rudder and both were way too stiff; the servo had nylon gears and I believe the excessive resistance from the elevator stripped the gear.

I think the crash could have been prevented if I had followed basic preflight rountine which I had deviated from that day, and that was to do a check of the movement of the control surfaces, which may have revealed the elevator servo problem. A reminder to "DO A PROPER PRE FLIGHT CHECK and DON'T DEVIATE FROM ROUTINE"!

I won't build another H9 Spitfire, I have a DLE55 brand new sitting on a shelf that I was going to use on a ZERO if Top Flite ever released one, so instead of waiting for a Zero I think I will get the Giant Top Flite Spitfire ARF instead.

Here is a photo just after completion and prior to maiden Flight.

I think that is the first time I have ever heard of not enough hinge gap. Usually those types of things show up during the build. I wonder if the elevator servo had been in a prior crash and the gears were cracked. I have had that happen more than once before. Now I label the servos when I install them so that I can evaluate their continued use in the event of a crash. It really sucks to eat a bird because the last bird that servo was in crashed.

I'm only guessing as to the servo failure, the tight hinges were my fault, I had pushed the Control surfaces up tight so no gap was showing; when I flexed them during the build after the hinges were glued in place, they were tight and I made the mistake thinking that the Servos would be alright, like I said, only guessing, but they were not big torque servos, nylon gears, can't recall if they were used or from a plane that I had crashed, I generally put new servos in my planes and use the older ones in my combat planes, and not sure if tight hinges can cause servo failure, its just that when you flexed the elevators and rudder there was some definate resistance and at the time of the build, I had wondered if I had made them too tight.

Sorry for the loss. I HATE when that happens. Best thing is to climb back on the horse. The Top Flite ARFs are very nice; I have the P-47, the AT-6, and the Corsair 62". They fly great, easy to land, look really good too. Love 'em all. Great prices with the Tower discounts. The quarter scale Spitfire will be big bucks in the air. Just thinking about flying one gives me a pretty high pucker factor. Get some big servos for it. --Tony #59

???

He did say that the radio was working. Both during and after the flight, so I'm not sure how you get that it's a 2.4 problem, or Futaba for that matter.

Casey;

You are correct, both Radio and Receiver were and are still working without any issues; as I described I could never get the plane to fly level; when it wanted to climb I would push forward the elevator stick and it responded, but the minute I pulled back to try and get level flight it would climb again, it was a constant up down battle, and I am guessing, the elevator servo got stuck or hung because of a section of the nylon gear was stripped, which in my opinion would account for the erratic behavior; I was able to retract the gear after taking off, full throttle control, etc.

In no way did I or will I believe it was a 2.4 Problem. I might add the Spitfire flew flawlessly a week before, and I have flown other planes on the same radio without issue. A 2.4 problem may have been a remote possibility if there were several people, greater than 20 or so, and they all had their radios on at the same time, and other 2.4 devices were actively running, etc; but I was one of 3 people at the field and the only one flying or had their radio on, and our field is far removed from the nearest town or business, etc.

The only reason I say this is that there was a possible issue with 2.4 at a huge flying event that had hundreds in attendance, and who knows how many people had their radios turned on, operating Ipads or other devices using 2.4, etc; apparently a plane went down, others had hits or glitches, the theory was that the airwaves were conjested with 2.4 traffic, some agree others don't.

Bull S***! No matter what brand of radio he had said someone would be able to pipe up with negative comments. Read what the man said...the servo wasn't working right.

Use whatever radio you like but keep the "urban myths" to yourself.

Brotherhood, I am glad to hear so many were able to sortie, but saddened that some did not return from their missions. I and 1.5 were unable to launch due to winds and other mission objectives.

Thanks for participating in this years Brotherhood sortie and I will post next years mission plans in the future. Maybe we can plan one during better flight conditions for those in other parts of the world.

Blue Skies,

Steve

Had my best sortie with my PZ Spitfire MKIX this AM. Ran quite a few batteries through her and greased every landing. I have a new one still in the box and have ordered the retracts for her. I am still flying my original with the fixed gear. I can't wait until I can fly her wheels up.
