Great saying Prekin,
God created aircraft mechanics, so pilots can have heroes too.

Red face

Well I finally got my Spitfire maidened Sunday, wow what a plane. It's a Hanger 9 Spitfire. 60 with a DLE 20. She glides in for a landing, no flaps either landing. It's official I think I like my warbirds more than my aerobatic planes.

Congratulations on your successful maiden. She looks great and you bet, the Spitfire looks awesome in the air.
Did you have any nose over tendencies?
Can't wait to get mine back up in the air this year.

Andreas
Happy building & flying.

A friend and I were doing historical stuff this weekend and one of the subjects of conversation was the cannon bays in the Spitfire.

At one time there was an attempt to put 4 cannon on board but the idea was discontinued as there was not enough room in the bay for more than a very few seconds of cannon fire. By removing one cannon, enough ammunition could be carried in the other bay to make the weapon effective and avoid redesigning the wing and construction routine.

We noticed that almost ALL wartime photos show the cannon in a different bay than peacetime photos. Anyone have any ideas as to why?

Depends on which wing the Spits had. The E wing or universal wing was put into service later in the war while the C wing was used earlier in the conflict. It was able to accommodate heaver and a wider range of armament than the C wing. The E wing had the canons in the outer bays and a 50 cal inboard of the canon. This wing was used with the Mark IX and with most later MKs as the C wings became unavailable. A lot of the Mk IXs' were converted IVs'. So you are likely to see photos of this Mk with canons in ether position (even the MK XIV could have ether). This is likely why most post war Spits had the canons in different positions as they were more likely to have the E wing.

No Facia, I was taught to pull elevator when I land and we also have a paved runway.

The paved runway sure helps. I am flying off of a grass runway and even with pulled elevator, she wants to
nose over on take off as soon as throttle is applied. It's a balancing act every time, but I am able to manage it.

That's good you can handle it, I've never flown any of my glow or gas planes off of grass, I'm sure it is very different than pavement, we have our own issues at our field, all are meteorological. The altitude is main factor, we are at 6500' less oxygen, so engines aren't as efficient up here. Also air density is thin and gets worse when the heat is on. Some times when the temp is 90○ we have the air density of 10,000 '. It's also windy most of the time, here if you wait for the wind to disappear you won't ever fly.

Hawk131, I love mine pretty equally. It's fun once in a while to make my H9 Spit do things the real one couldn't do aerobatically.
We get a lot of wind here too. the afternoons are 10-15 mph winds most of the year. Lately it's been getting to 20+ because of storm fronts around us. Fortunately I get to fly off an AMA designed paved field.
Happy flying to you.

I'm looking for spitfire reference books I can get at the library.

What I want to know is what MK variants operated in what theater during WWII. I'm planning on building a MK I or MK IX and am now considering paint schemes. I don't want to put a desert camo on a MK I if they weren't in that theater.

Next, I'd like a book that shows the differences between the MK's I through IV.

Thanks for you help.

THANK YOU FELLOW VETERANS FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE AND EVERYTHING MANY OF YOU ARE STILL DOING. (I wish my animated "Spitfire escort fighters" would have been allowed to post with this expression of gratitude on my Facebook Timeline. (Timeline URL is located below at the end of my "Post signature.")

Enough said.

Out.

Is a repair out of the question? Some photo's might help in determining how to repair.

Does anybody have a video of their Top Flite GS Spitfire in action? I'd like to see something other than a factory video to determine its flying qualities.

Thanks in advance!

Here are a few updates on my Mk14 Spit. I have merged a Century Jet fuse with a Yellow Aircraft wing and tail section.

The last pic is the color scheme I plan to paint mine.

Glad to join, thank you.

Is there a way to organize the posts - creating a single place where all the Spitfire build/research threads would be? Is that a "sticky" post?
