Cool

A black plane hurt your eyes...oh, it was the red stripe and air coolers
on it. lol. Let me see if I have this pic on the wifes system, this will hurt your eyes.
darn it's not.....so picture a RED..&..YELLOW FW-190. ya, its mine.

I have an working exhaust system from Kelo for my P-40 but for this unit I don't want to go all
out on this rebuild. no one seems to have the extras we sometimes need..."Things With Wings"

will be my next stop...lets ride.

Default Wing repair

cutout a panel on top and made a rough in piece to test fit, next I'll laminate the piece. Removed a piece of rib lamination to help me get some clearance to fit it into place since it has to be in ribs at both ends.model has flown with a 31 cc Ryobi gas and a Turnigy setup for electric. Both electric and gas can be seen on youtube under k4lll Fun plane to fly..
Posted a slideshow of the repair on You tube the repair went well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyR29JpOYQU

Hey Steve, this is Doc. I'm working on a Top Flite giant scale Spitfire with a DLE-55 and electric retracts. Hope to have it ready for OK Warbirds. Hope to see you there! Doc

Hello Doc, I went by Mike's Hobby the other day to grab some stuff and he told me he had sold the first one to a local flyer. Glade it was you. Looking forward to seeing it fly at Oklahoma Warbirds.

If anyone here wants to attend here is the link to their web-site: http://www.okwarbirds.com/

Let me know if you are coming.

I put flights 19 through 22 on my H9 Spit this last Sunday, Joe I have mine balanced with the gear up and it is smack in the middle of the range set out in the manual. I have not flown it off of grass yet, just packed dirt, packed gravel (Phoenix Desert) and pavement. Of the 3 surfaces pavement has been the most interesting to land on. I am 50% for getting a small ground loop at the end real slow, but I have rocked up on the wing tips. In the gravel or dirt I have had no problems keeping it straight and upright. Anyway Joe I would politely suggest caution moving the c of g back, even a slightly tail heavy Spitfire is a flight you won't soon forget :-)

Good Luck, Cheers

Rick, thanks

oh, i understand! but my spit is at the very front of the saggested cg. it flys fine there but in the TALL grass when i advance the throttle even alittle the tail comes right up, even with full up E. i have the batteries set up so i can move them back alittle at a time to improve ground handling. and once it is ironed out i dont burn off feul so my cg does not move aft duringthe flight.

i've been trying to get the flaps to act like they are saposed to. last flight was with 50 degrees and i still have to push the nose to get it to come down and glide it in. so the next time out i have changed the dirty servo end point to 150%. the next step is to change the clean end to 150% then a larger servo wheel. but i think im close.

a trick i learned for black top was to go out and push the plane into the wind on the runway and adjust the tail wheel, not the rudder (just the tail wheel), so it tracks straight. when i fly off grass the exact position of the tail wheel to the rudder does not have to be perfect because of the grass resistence/ slide factor, same thing for gravel and sand. but on black top its got to be close or the change in force when transitioning from tail wheel to rudder control will send the tail wagging in a dirrection you don't want.

Balance the plane at the rear-most recommended point and reduce your throws on the elevator. Add expo til it feels comfortable. Mix down elevator with flap deployment. Consider a shim at the rear of the retract mounts to cant the gear forward to reduce nose-over tendencies.

All of the above are time-tested methods to tame a taildragger. Whether you use these ideas or not, good luck to you with your Spitfire.

Hi Joe, Thanks for the tip, the tailwheel is aligned, and mine is also electric. E-flite 160 on 12 S with a 16X10 Prop, This gives me better than scale speed and uses little electrons, I accidentally put 15 minutes on a pair of 5000mah. It appears we both have issues with ground crews, you can guess what happened. Plane came in with power and taxied back....... Lucky me! I completely agree with Lifer, moving the weight will not help as much as using shims to angle the gear forward, to me that is most likely your best bet. Regarding the flaps, mine are set to 85 degrees, give or take one or two degrees. Mine weighs 20 pounds and with the flaps set like they are, the plane does not slow that much, this is the only plane in my hanger that lands power off. Also I have next to no nose down trim set with the flaps I notice very little pitch change when they are extended. If you are coming in like I do with no power, then I have another thought for you, come in a tad flatter under power and upon touching the grass maintain power or power up a little with full up elevator. This might help keeping air over the elevator and maintain some effectiveness.

Good Luck and keep the clean side up :-)

Cheers

i have the lg shimmed, pressently i just have to advance T real slow to get her moving. u nailed the way i've been landing her. turn on final have to push the nose down, go to idle then as a percaustion i add T with E to level off. completely different than all my other warbirds which settle right down to the runway. so its good to know its not gonna go where i expected. so i'll start withthe moving the cg back then

you got the big one, i wish i had unlimited room. i've got 7 gs in my hangwer and just no more room.

For Honor. For Glory.

YES! I can hardly wait to procure a brand new HANGER 9 Spitfire and enjoy at least the same performance enjoyed by my Spit as indicated below while demonstrating how great the AR635 receiver really is. Thank you Spitfire Brotherhood! ENJOY!

FABULOUS FOUR POINT ROLLS, AND OTHER ADDICTIVE FLYING PERFORMANCE ACTION!!! (one caveat)

Not only the best four point rolls I've ever flown, but the best four point rolls I've ever seen were performed on my Spit's next to last fighter sweep compliments of the revolutionary SPEKTRUM AR635 receiver. The speed, controllability during various maneuvers, and even the sound of the modified 12 X 8 three bladed prop provided pure flying pleasure! Turns out that the 80 degree weather allowed heat buildup to melt the rubber ESC covering on that fabulous flight. The next sortie flown the next day using a much more mild mannered modified 12 X 6 X 3 prop cut to 11,75 inches, pulling a mere maximum 30 Amps as opposed to the killer modified 12 X 8's 40 Amp maximum current draw left a lot to be desired. More testing needed.

Returning to base.

Out.

This might help explain my Spit situation.

Okay, tests seem to suggest that the high gyroscopic force provided by the "heavy" modified 12 X 8 X 3 prop in concert with the high tech receiver is what made those perfect looking four point rolls possible as reported earlier. I am currently working on possible ways to get better cooling that might allow the heavy prop to work well in higher temperature weather conditions. The cooler running, lighter two bladed prop does not help provide such great looking four point rolls.

Stay tuned for future adventures.

Out.

Well, a huge thanks to TJD Models here in the UK, ordered the H9 Spit on Sunday afternoon and it arrived 1pm Tuesday, even FedEx didn't damage it as well (although the driver more or less told me to unload it from the van myself!)

I even managed to get it in the garage before my wife saw it... result!!!

I'll sit down with it now and decide how far I want to go regarding extras, thinking flashing guns, maybe nav lights and (of course) a decent cockpit.. it'll be sitting along side my P51,

Here is the first Fuselage pulled out of my 1/4.5 scale Spitfire moulds.I have made an upper hatch following panel lines to allow electric or gas option and also to keep all gear as far forward as possible. .Raised overlapping panel lines achieved by using body filler along a tape edge I will use foam core wing simply because I have the cutting gear and ability to do the type of wings. I wanted it to not be perfect as the full size spitfires were not perfect especially during the war. I still have a couple more small moulds to make but I am very satisfied so far,

OVERHEATING SPITFIRE PROBLEM SOLVED

In addition to the already discussed cooling system modifications detailed on our Park Flyer forum thread, a decisively important but barely noticeable opening installed on the right side of the tail section in the lower "rudder hinge area" works perfectly to keep the ESC "touchably warm" after a more or less normal flight in 80 degree weather conditions. I used sharpened metal tubing to create the opening in the bottom right side rudder hinge area (can only be seen from the right rear view of the plane) to clear out a channel through to the inside of the rear section of the fuselage. The battery compartment was also made less restrictive for better air flow through the aft sections of the wing radiators and the new vent in the rudder area. Ram air through the hollowed out engine air intake as well as the slightly enlarged three prop blade openings and small spinner/fuselage gap area seems to help provide a nice balanced cooling system for great war combat emergency power demonstrations.

The vertical stabs on both of my Mk IX Spitfires are also modified for purely aesthetic reasons to look more like the one depicted in the above picture that I hope will remain on this post.

It's time to get back in the fight.

Out.

Anyone know where I can find a replacement canopy for a large Pica (1.20/1:5 scale) size? Have one I am refurbishing and would like to remove the canopy to get to the cockpit, but before I do I want to find a replacement in case I break it.
Thanks
