I'm guessing "YOU" means you don't think it was me... hmmm.. how to answer?

Although I yelled out that that something let go and instantly had the eyes of everyone on the flightline focused on my plane and a group of guys were all around me shouting instructions I was so busy sawing on the controls to keep the Spit airborne I never thought to hand the remote to someone... with over $7500 in the air I don't think anyone would be a friend anymore if I put that burden on them. It truly was out of sheer luck that I was able to land that plane and had I handed the control to someone and they lost it while in their hands it would have been devastating.

Several months ago I was doing taxi tests on a new Ziroli P61... a dear friend knew I was not going to fly that day... I was going to follow my plan and simply test it on the ground... everyone knew... He was badgering me repeatedly for me to lift the nose to see how it rode with the nose wheel in the air... I kept saying "no" but he came up behind me and explained that it would be a good test to see how well it tracked. The second the nose came up the plane was airborne and dropped the wing instantly and pointed right into the pit area... I ran up to full power, cleared the flightline, pit area, the cars in the parking lot and flew into a man eating tree. The crash wasn't the thing that ruined a relationship.. but the fact that he maintains that it was only a suggestion and I shouldn't have listened. He's right but that was $5K and it was gone... 2 new DA 50's (both cracked heads), a $700 set of retracts (bent and broke), three $200 servos stripped and burned, and of course a really nicely built plane. I promised myself I would never put a friendship in that kind of pressure again.

but... as an aside on the Spit... I've cut the fuse open under the horizontal stab, I've cut away the forward bell crank axle and will attempt to have CF arrow shafts from servo to the rear bell crank assembly done this week. The only thing I'm stuck on is how to patch the giant 4X3 inch hole I've cut into the side of the fuse under the stab. It's a carbon fiber and fiber glass fuse and I'm guessing at how to patch it... I'll have pics this week and looking for some pointers!

I suppose, that L.F. means Low Flight (Spitfires CW- clipped wings) and H.F. means High Flight. But which mark of Spitfire Mk. IX had spiky rudder and which had round shape of rudder? Iīll be glad for some 3D pictures. Sometime I find a picture of Spitfire Mk IXe with spiky rudder and on the another page I see Spitfire Mk IXc also with spike rudder:
Here is some example.
It looks like, nobody knows answer to my question.

HAHA! thanks... I'm glad nobody thought to take a pic... I'm pretty sure I must have looked like someone trying to save their underwear from a an explosive event.

That's where I was going with my comment. My rather clumsy attempt at humor, that nearly went awry. Thanks for your understanding!

this weekend i took the advice here with my H9 spit. i was having an attitude problem after flap deploy, so i used the flap system on my 9503 and with 14% down E that worked great! thanks guys!

next problem - the 3 position switch is inboard on the tx, i had a hard time finding it and had to take eyes off the plane to do so. how do you handle this? i,ve always used sliders, and back when we had a TX per plane i would remount the switch. there are a number of nice locations on the back of the TX. but i think i will try going back to the slider and adding down trim, 14% =aprox 8 clicks down.

what are your thoughts?

Joe

Put some shrink tubing on the switch. You'll feel the difference.

paladin, both ideas work great. I too have used fuel tubing as an identifier. Another thing to do is stand with your transmitter attached to a RX, servo, and battery. Now acting as if you are flying, practice with the switch until the memory is developed. This can make it a simple task in time. Right now you are trying to break old habits, but once you do the slider will become the odd one to operate. Another thing that may help if possible is to choose another switch. I always use the same switches for all my planes, and I always keep my gear and flaps on the left so not to require the right hand to leave or move the right stick feeling for switches.

i like where you are going with that. but i have to confess i am a mode 1 flyer (ya i know that makes me older than the hills), and like you i have always used the same set up for all my planes. i used to mount the retract switch on the back of the tx so i would place it between my index and long finger at the last knuckle. that allowed me to lift the gear at 3ft and pop them down effortlessly. all it took was about 6 inches of 28guage wire and a deans connector. that was on my stylus which gave me the ability to assign any switch to any function.

enter 2.4ghz... i bought the 9503 cause my stylus was 20+ years old and am amazed at the step back i took! i may not be reading it correctly but each switch can only be assigned to certain tasks and, well, I’m just not used to having to stay within the lines (if you will). so i set up flaps on left slider and retracts on the right outer most switch, ending the low , scale retracting of the gear.

now that i have laid the ground work if this was my stylus i would mix E to flap (slider) so that when the flaps come down the E does also. then set up a kill switch to turn this function off if i don't like it, or want it off for a dog fight where i will mix the flap to up E for extra turning power, etc..

so my goal is to figure out how to accomplish this on the 9503. because the flap system is just a dedicated mix.

i know some of you are wondering how i did not break that sole switch on the back of my TX while handling. it was quite simple i took a peace of 1/2 or 3/4 shelving wood and cut it to fit the back of my stylus with a hole for the switch, a little Velcro at the top and bottom and off we go. then always carry in a TX box so the only time it was unprotected was while i was flying or setting up the plane.

Did you choose the wrong TX? Mine will assign any function to any switch.

Default What a thread!

Hi.
I like to thank all of you for this thread. I am building a ESM 72 spitfire with DLE 35RA and found a lot of info here.
Thanks for helping

Hi Prekin, as far as the different shaped rudders go on the Mk IX the change was a natural progression in the development of the Spitfire as the power from the engines increased and the aircraft were used differently IE.. at higher altitudes where the air is thinner thus needing more surface area for the same effect. The Mk IX was the second 'Stop Gap' variant of the Spitfire (read that as "GET SOMETHING IN THE AIR THAT GOES HIGHER FASTER FURTHER RIGHT NOW!!!!!") the first being the Mk V. So it was slapped together quickly and in itself was developed along the way. One of the changes was indeed the different rudder. You will note that the Mk VIII (Eight) only came out with the pointed rudder and this is because it was still being developed as a stand alone marque while the Mk IX was 'Slapped together' and put into service. The Mk VIII came into service way after the Mk IX.

So early Mk IX C and E round rudders, later Mk IX C and E pointy rudders.
Hope that helps clear a couple of things up.

So, can we see IX C and E with both of types rudders?
When we was taught about the development at my university, we talked about the Spitfire. The teacher said that pointed rudder on Spitfire was important because of the more powerful engine which was use in Spitfire IX. But I donīt think that IX c and IX e had different engines or props.
