Hi Spitfire brothers and sister

I have a dilemma - pitts style exhaust in the cowl behind the engine , or canister muffler in the fuselage.
For the engine performance the canister muffler is better for sure (you can't make mistakes) - but channeling the canister for cooling is required, you loose space for the other equipment installation and negatively affects the CG position
Otherwise is also possible to fabricate a pitts style muffler (not only empty cans but three baffled chambers) with the volume 8 -10 times the engine displacement - according to engine producer recommendation.
I would like to resolve this dilemma before I start any building.

Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Prekin,
With a bit more reading you will find the many varied ways the Mk IX went into service.

Have a read of this mate. Very good and interesting read.

ok, just ordered a replacement wing from Yellow Aircraft for my wounded baby... after months of thinking and pondering and looking at the damaged wing I decided it would be best to just get a new wing. (probably safer too)

Hi Guys,

Thank you so much for your welcome. I have not received an a topic update until today so was surprised to see how much has been added since last checking the site.

The wind has not been so great here the last 6 weeks or more so the ESM Spitfire has been grounded until it calms down. But that has allowed me to make progress on the Pica Spitfire. The DLE-55RA engine conversion and fuselage strengthening is done, now it is making a new lower engine cowling and then prep and paint. Due to the condition of the plastic parts I have had to remake a lot of them in fiberglass which has taken a lot of time. A few more weeks away until it is close to flying.

Hi Mr Mad Scientist,

My little El Chupacabra Gee Bee is a load of fun. It is 70" wingspan with a DLE-30. For a Gee Bee it is actually really nice to fly (at full speed). It is the baby brother of my big Gee Bee, the CARF R2 with a DA-150. Apart from Spitfire's, Gee Bee's are my other favorite plane.

I am so sorry for the mix up. I have been side tracked with work and my RCU stopped sending me messages about thread postings. The last I received was back awhile ago on page 137. Welcome aboard and it is great to have a sister in the mix.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the big warm welcome and really glad to be a member

glade to have you onboard.
Hi Mr Tuskegee,

Are you asking if I am an impostor? If you are then no. I fly on a regular basis with everything from little indoor planes through to large scale including the CARF Gee Bee R2. I am also the CFI of my club here in Australia. That should rule out the impostor theory!

Anyway now I know the email notifications are flaky I will pop back more often.

Regards,

Jaz

Well, it was another "lovely" summer's day here in Bonnie Scotland ( which really means the rain got warmer! )

After a couple of weeks off due to work, I was able to get back on to my Hanger 9 model. I'm impressed how well this thing seems to fall together, so far everything's fit straight out the box.. a little trimming to get the E-Flite retracts to slot in but nothing else.

I didn't like the idea of simply screwing the control horns into some ply and adding a little superglue to the threads (seems a bit weak IMHO) so they were swapped for a more robust Pete Tindal offering...

Then it was time to put it all together and see how it looks so far....

Goalie, check the roundel under canopy on your Spitfire. You changed the colours! Spitfire DU-L was from sqn no. 312, pilot Ladislav Svetlik.

Hi bros,
One of my Spitfires is the ESM 72.5" Mk XIV, on which I dont like the wing. Little if any washout, drops the left wing when stalled, weak retract mounts has been repaired too many times and its not scale as there is no middle section, 2 wing halves joined together.

So, Im thinking to build a new scale wing, are there any good plans about 73" wingspan?

Otherwise I will have to enlarge e.g. BT's 69" or reduce an 80 incher there seem to be plenty of those

Any suggestions?

I have on file a set of plans for a Spit with a 72 1/4" span. It is a Mk.I but the basic wing planform was unchanged between the Mk.I and Mk.XIV so it could be used as a basis for your build. Appears to be a well drawn plan and accurate although I have not given them any more than a cursory look. Shoot me an email and I will send you the files if you're interested.

Installed the retracts this afternoon, she's on her wheels for the first time. I was also able to test the fit of the e-Flite retracts...

Once you've uploaded the movie to YouTube, right click on it and select "Copy Video URL". Then when you reply there's an icon directly above where your typing that looks like movie film. Click on that and copy the URL into the box. Post the reply and it'll appear

I just found some Spitfire and Seafire scale drawings on photobucket: Uploaded by John Ellis.
http://s197.photobucket.com/user/JJE...?sort=3&page=1

As an example, Seafire Mk.17, originally drawn by Fred Spring:

Also, I bumped into some Spitfire and Seafire drawings in the "William Robertshaw, Artist" gallery on Flickr:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/smon/s...7629091266887/

Example in reduced size, also Seafire Mk.17:

The only Seafire Mk.17 plan that I'm aware of is the John Bell 23in span stick and tissue free flight plan: http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=2052

On the other hand, you could get very close to a Seafire 17 by modifying a low back Spitfire XIV: shorter nose, different windscreen, and hook in the tail.

I have some high resolution scans of the Fred Spring Seafire XVII drawings if anyone needs a copy. For anyone interested in building a Seafire XVII you might have a look at the Dave Platt Mk.XII as a starting point or, at the very least, for reference. The Mk.XII shares the same engine/prop/spinner as the Seafire XV and XVII although the XVII has a substantial number of other airframe differences from the Mk.XII.

I cannot honestly say that I NEED a copy - but I'd very much LIKE to have one. Sending PM.
