Hi Guys,

Had flight number 3 on my refurbished Pica Spitfire yesterday and so far it was the best one.

It is here for all to see in video.

https://vimeo.com/107981135 The engine is still getting hot though not as bad as the first two flights. I believe that the cooling system is sufficient but it is a touch too lean on the mixtures. Not by a lot but enough to cause the engine to flame out on throttling up for a go around from a high idle on approach. So it is a dead stick landing.

The only other problem is stopping the engine from coming loose, it did it again yesterday. The original ply firewall which is bonded and glassed to a new stronger inner firewall is too soft and the standoffs keep sinking into it. I am going to fix it this week by fitting a large 6mm alloy plate between the standoffs and the firewall.

Other than that the Spitfire flies great. The third flight gave me enough time to get a real feel for the performance and it was fantastic. It is such a beautiful plane to fly.

Please excuse the music but I was feeling so patriotic after flying such a magnificent British plane!

Jaz

Great job handling the deadstick. Do you have "baffles" around the engine to force air through the fins? It really does make a world of difference in keeping the engine cool. Even simple baffles like a small piece of plywood glued between the engine and the cowl work well. Something like this pic shows.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback.

The teething problems are really quite minor and each flight is better than the previous. At the moment I have made two 6mm alloy plates to go between the engine standoffs and the firewall to prevent further crushing the original soft ply. This should fix the engine coming loose. In the photo below you can see the difference between the original blue spacers point of contact compared to the new alloy plates. Way more area to distribute the load on the ply.

Radfordc with your question on baffles,

Yes it has directed air intake in the cowling to force the air over the cylinder, similar to what I do on all my planes.

For the rear muffler DLE55 factoring in the cooling was a big part of the thought process. I utilised the hole in the fuselage for the air outlet and made a fibreglass guide for the air to come out. Then fitted a Bennett muffler which is a lot smaller than the standard DLE unit, this allows more room around the cooling fins at the back for the air to escape.

Since the maiden I have been tweaking the air outlets and it is much better though I have also been incrementally richening the mixtures between flights as well. I originally did not touch the mixture screws from out of the box but it is still a little bit too lean
.
Overall I would class this Pica Spitfire as an easy to fly plane. Ground handling is tricky with the tail being so light but its friendliness in the air really helps in lining it up and slowing down for a good touchdown.

Once it is sorted it is going to be a fantastic weekend warbird.

Oh, the CG was always a point of worry on this plane as there is so much controversy on the web on where it needs to be set. It ranges from 4 inches to 6 inches with the popular one being 4.5 inches. This Spitfire is set at an exact 5 3/8 inches which feels perfect.

I have no idea how you could taxi one of these with the original gear fitted and the cg at 4.5 inches!

Did your plans show how to configure the retracts ? I am doing a MK-I and am just getting into the retract design. I know the MK-IX and MK-I are different but the idea is close. BTW your Spit looks very nice and does not appear to be pitch sensitive, Good Job !!

Hi Terry,

If you are talking about my Pica Spit. I should clarify how it is the third flight.

I bought this plane second hand about 3 years ago without any power system. My guess is it was built 15 years or more ago with a Moki 180 engine. I have done a lot of modifications to fit the DLE-55RA and refurbish it back to a flying condition. So it is my third flight on it and with the gas engine. The photos attached are what the plane looked like originally.

The landing gear is in the original place where Pica designed it to be. It is too far back in the wing but to move any further forward would require messing with the main spar. It has been raked forward with 2mm shims which is as far as it will go.

The landing gear design on this plane is not very good. The legs are also too short so it limits the prop size.

As far as pitch sensitive this Spitfire is far from it. I fly it with elevator travel of a touch over 1 inch and 25% expo. My ESM 1/6 Scale Spitfire is way more pitch sensitive than the Pica Spitfire.

Jaz; are you going to trim some length from those two exhaust tubes? If unfortunately you have to do a wheels up landing, those two exhaust tubes sticking out that far will contact the ground and possibly rip you engine from the fire wall! You have done a great job of restoring that old Pica Spitfire back to flying condition, I also enjoyed viewing your video of your Spitfire in flight!

WARBIRDRCER,

Guess I need to join the Spitfire Brotherhood. I just finished putting together the Hanger 9 MKll. I put a Thunder Tiger 91S in it. I was wondering if someone who has this Spit could tell me if the 5 1/4" CG is good, or if it is better set in another location. Also if the throws are good. Thanks for any help.

Our field is just south of Lansing on Gilman Rd. I've flown at your field several times for scale meets. I once crashed a 1/5 Pica Spitfire at your field!
