Default Most Maneuverable WWII Fighter!!

Sonny; I also thankyou for the link.
It's amazing to know that Connell Edwards is probabily the only pilot alive today that actually flew so many warbirds such as the Spitfire, ME-109, P-51D Mustang etc.. He is able to compare the maneuverabilties of each warbird, and he stated that if WWII fighter pilots had the same experience and flying capabilities, the best and most maneuverable warbird in the hands of the experienced pilot would be the ME-109, hands down!!
Now let the arguments begin from people who never flew any of those WWII fighters

Roger

Actually, American fighter pilots were taught to use tactics that utilized their aircraft's strengths and minimized their weaknesses. Getting into a turning contest was discouraged. Claire Chennault was one of the first to promote this methodology and the A.V.G. kill ratio over the more maneuverable Japanese fighters was impressive.

Army and Navy pilots were trained to follow this approach as a result.

Gary, look at the bright side, you took your plane home instead of a kit

Nick, thanks for posting that link.
I will post the link in other forums and it should get lots of nay sayers worked up! I would say at least 90% of WWII fighter buffs think that the P-51 Mustang and the Spitfire were better fighters then the ME-109. This article and what pilot Connell Edwards had to say comparing the ME-109, Spitfire and P-51 Mustang will make no difference in what fighter they believe was the better aircraft. Even I was convinced that the Spitfire and the Mustang were better aircraft until I read and heard what Connell Edwards had to say about the three WWII fighters. He knows the truth, he flew all three and he stated the ME-109 wins hands down!!

LOL good luck with that!
You should add the Me-262 in the argument, and what would the outcome be if it had been produced in half the numbers of the 109 (i.e. 15,000 planes)

Plus, the 109's record is enhanced by the aircraft it shot down in Spain, Poland, the USSR, etc. defending with older designs such as biplanes and outdated monoplanes. Skewed figures do not tell the real story. On an equal footing, it was tactics that won the air war.

w1nd6urfa; I totally agree with you. Unfortunately Connell Edwards never flew the ME262 to make a comparison. I posted in RCGroups forum and I may have started WWIII Lol!!

The Spitfire and all of the other WWII aircraft that Connell Edwards had in storage have been sold to one aircraft collector from Europe, unfortunately the name of the collector was not released. The collector is no doubt, a very wealthy man!!

The real deal. Wondering if this book/pamphlet has any significant value? Tony, Spitfire BH59

Tony:
What you have is a reproduction not an original. You might go on Amazon and see if there are any for sale there to get an idea of its value.
Cheers,

I thought it might be a reproduction. I have to tell you, it's pretty darn convincing. Should I look for any special clues? It includes 40 pages of detail. It states on the title page, "Reprinted, February, 1947". The Navy Commander who gave this to me, back in the 70s, now deceased, told me he picked it up in England in the 1950s. It doesn't make it an original, but it does make it old. It's a keeper.

If you look on the front cover, it says "reprinted with her majesty's permission" meaning Queen Elizabeth, who became queen in 1953. It is still a very nice piece of documentation as in many parts of the commonwealth Spitfires were still on active duty in the early 50's. More than likely this book was used by a real live Spitfire pilot.

Cheers,

Andy

@ForcesR, might want to consider the owner of Red Bull, I shudder at the thought of that Spitfire or any of the HA1112's have that logo painted on the side. It is his money to say the least.

I had the fortune to meet the Nelson Ezell who did the Red Bull P-38 restoration that was formerly Miss America, and had the extra privilege of spending a week working on a Corsair restoration in his shop

Ezell Aviation has done a number of Warbirds, He did the P51 "Miss Marilyn" for Dick Hanson. Dick had purchased his Mustang from Connie Edwards, Connie had owned a number of Mustangs at one time much like he did the Buchons he just sold.

Here is another video from a couple of weeks ago. A fellow club member is flying his Yellow Aircraft Spitfire and I have my ESM Spitfire up at the same time.

We often play chases with both his BF109 and my Spitfire. My ESM Spitfire has a DLE30 fitted, is fast and is loads of fun to fly.

I have an ESM 89" Wingspan Spitfire and was wondering what size wheels you guys are using. I will be upgrading to some nice 4 spoke aluminum wheels and wasn't sure what size to get. I am guessing 4.5", but just want to make sure before making the purchase.

Thank you in advance.

Yes you are correct, the ESM 89" WS Spitfire wheels are 4.5" in diameter. Did you not purchase the ESM air actuated LG with the nice aluminum wheels when you purchased your Spitfire?
