Hi Roger,

Thanks for the confirmation. I didn't purchase the ESM Retracts because I am upgrading to the Sierra Retracts. The kit came with plastic wheels but they were only 4" in diameter which seemed a little small. Thank you again for confirming that the 4.5" Diameter is the correct size.

If there is an empty slot in the roster sign me up for the brotherhood, I never really even cared much about the Spitfire until I started flying one, really a lot of fun!

I flew my HK Spitfire all week only missing Wednesday, got 6 flights today for a total of 51 flights so far. It really is an interesting plane to fly, I find the elevator authority mushy. I Have the throw at about 1" of up and down. I was not doing as good today with the 90 degree crosswind and a little gusty, but most days it just floats on in, very nice. Typically I have full up elevator in ground effect, just using power to control altitude and the flair, was not working for me today though!

Thanks guys! Appreciate the compliments! It does a very nice job going right into the wind, really a lot of fun to fly. Everyone really compliments it at the field also, it is a beautiful shape.

Nice field. Question: what's your assessment of the HK gear? Do they hold air for a long time? Is the metal nice and hard? Do you have to constantly tighten anything like you do on some of the Chinese metal?

Thanks! Like most stuff from China everything is there but you have to go over it and check it all. All the air nipples were hand tight, so I made sure they were all sealed and tightened. I use a BVM fill valve and a Jet Legend retract valve, all of the T's and valves that come with them are not usable. They hold air for several hours, but they will stop going all the way in and will always lock down with even the smallest amount of air pressure if you extend them and retract them to many times. I do not have any play or undo slop in my retracts and I have 54 flights on my Spitfire now. The retracts use lock nuts on all the strut parts, the scissors are just for show though anyway. The bolt that captures the lower shock strut also functions as my gear door retainer and it has a lock nut on it as well. I have not had to tighten anything on the gear yet.


The lower strut (exposed shock area) does not appear to be made of aluminum, it is much harder metal. Time will tell I guess but they appear to be holding out just fine so far!

I am a new member of this great brotherhood,and I live in Denmark - Skandinavia.
And yes,I allso have a Seafire. Its the one from Escale,and it is one I borght from another modeller,that gave it up. She has never flown before,so I am looking forvard to do the test flight,this next spring

I built some 25 years ago a pattern spitfire that was in Model Builder. Built up wing with only a tip and root rib shown...I lofted all the ribs and then sheeted the wing. it still flys once or twice a year and has, get this, a Kraft 61 engine that still hauls it. Also have mechanical retracts....
Still think the Spitfire is one of the most beautiful planes every built. Nowadays all the big planes are ARF, but I still like to scratch build.
