Hey Guys it Adam from Warbirdpilots.com

I just wanted to correct and add some weight information about my pilot figures. I now have new cotton filled wire frame bodies for my line of Pilot Figures. The 12" Tall 1/5~1/6 Scale Pilot figures are only 5 - 6 ounces, and the 15" Tall 1/4.5~1/4 Scale Pilot Figures are only 7 - 8 ounces. The original plastic figures I used to carry were approximately 8 - 10 ounces.

So I have been able to shave another 2 - 5 ounces of weight off the figures. They still look exactly the same with all the same great individual clothing and equipment, just now even lighter.

I have attached a picture of the 12" Tall 1/5~1/6 Scale WWII British RAF Pilot sitting on my scale, so you can see the weight. I hope this helps clear up any questions or concerns about the weight of the figures, and shows you that you can get an incredible looking full figure pilot without the extra dead weight.

Thanks,

Actually, it seems that taking off and landing with canopy open was - and still is - standard procedure with Spitfires and Seafires. Watching some images or videos should confirm it.

I've only seen one Spitfire fly "live" (Mk.XVI) and the pilot took off and landed with canopy open.
Excellent, even more of a reason to make an operable canopy. Thank you for the info!

Thank you Adam! That's great information and all I needed to hear. Currently budgeting for one of your pilots for sure, I like the light weight option you have. PS how much weight does the moving head option add? Cheers-

On a side note has anyone got a good source for a scale tailwheel assembly for a 1/5 or 1/6 scale Spitfire? I might just fabricate something but it would be interesting to know what's available too.

Does anyone have a good idea as to weather Spitfire crews often / sometimes took off or landed with the sliding canopy open (like some pilots of other aircraft sometimes did)? Trying to decide if it is worth the trouble of making a servo operating canopy.
HiEddie,
My pilot is only 203 g's which is okay for me and that is fully dressed with parachute. 12" high. The only trouble with the canopy open is it may come off while flying your spit. Unless you make sure it is built really good and strong. If the wind gets under it it will surely go. I have see a few mustangs land with out the canopy. So make sure you can make it nice and strong.

Hi Eddie,
I just checked the weight of my RAF pilot 7.16oz. But I am going to take off his gun belt and map wallet. make sure you check your pilot dress as some are not what they used.
also the tail wheel is from sierragiant.com here is a picture they show on there site. hope it all helps. John

Thanks Piperjon! All good stuff. The tailwheel looks nice, I'll have to check the dimensions. My Spit is really closer to 1:6 scale (1.5.5 to 1), might make it a requirement for me to fabricate something. It's very close to the Brian Taylor one, so anything that works on a BT Spit will "just about" work on the H9 Spit.

Hello Eddie P,

Thank you for the question. I use the original hollow plastic bodies for the moving head figures. The original hollow plastic bodied figures with all the gear and clothing on were 8 ounces. I crack open the bodies and remove some of the plastic frame work and install a Hitec HS-55 Servo which runs up to the neck joint with a very short dowel. I then close up the body and the servo in enclosed in the figures upper chest. You have no idea it is a servo operated figure except for a wire coming out his "3rd point of contact", ie: butt.

That wire goes directly into the fuselage and can be y-harnessed with the rudder. Because I remove some of the frame work in the body when I crack it open, the servo doesn't add any weight. So the Moving Head figures weigh only 8 ounces.

I added a link to one of my customers videos. He installed the moving head 12" Tall 1/5~1/6 Scale WWII British RAF Figures in his Hangar 9 30cc Spitfire. It is the perfect size and looks great with the moving head.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQiiJLW7K0E Thanks,

Adam Martin

You apparently need the guns to shoot down enemy seagulls!

Here are few pics of a few ESM/YT 89" 50cc Spits I've built over the past few years. Mine is the Recon Pink one and I've also put in a link to the YouTube video of her finally flying...

rcgeorge29, Mike Skingle makes 1/6, 1/5 and 1/4 scale cannons and other accessories for the Spitfire. Here is the link to his site in the UK. BB78, Mike is a great guy to deal with, before he takes your order you have to make a promise that you will send photos of your Spitfire after installation of his cannons etc. Well at least that is what I had to do Lol!!

Hahahah well done guys... Mike is a mate of mine and we actually set out with him moulding them and me selling them at the shows and via the website you found....which is out of date

.. Mike does indeed still make them and they are the ones I used on the Pink and Silver Spits in the pictures above.
Not sure if the Prices are still up to date but I do know he still does them.

Any issues getting hold of him come back to me here and I will see what I can do for you.

Please add me to the Spitfire Brotherhood list... H9 30CC Mk IX, should take flight this spring. I've had a MkI in the distant past, but sold it. 10 years ago I'd have been building from plans, something like a BT. Years from now, when I have more time again to devote to the extremely enjoyable art of building from basic material, I'll be doing plans built once again. I still scratch build but I can only do one of those projects every 3 or 4 years or so and I am in the middle of one now so my Spit had to be an ARF if I was to have one at all. There is a fortune of great information and motivation here in this thread, thanks to all of you.

Hi Guys,

The Pica Spitfire wing repair and retract shifting is going along well.

I have added the two spruce wing spars which has increased the wing strength substantially. I also shifted the retracts on the mounts and made longer oleo legs. Then made up some spacers and raked the gear forward.

All up I have shifted the wheels forward 1.5 inches which on the tail lift test has made a remarkable improvement on the angle where the nose wants to drop. The longer legs have also made this Spitfire look much nicer on the ground as it always looked a little short and stubby on the grass.

Am really looking forward to landing this plane without it wanting to go on its nose.

Jaz

Hello Brothers and Sisters;
Phoenix Model is coming out with a very nice Spitfire at the end of next month!! Look like a good fun plane to have!!
Not much info from Tower Hobbies, but they do have a video of it in the air.
I put one on back order and will be going with a OS 51AX in the nose.
