Cheap knock-around gas Warbird
Recently finished putting together a CMP BF109 and installed an HK RCG 26cc gasser. Talk about cheap thrills! The motor was about $125 delivered and I picked up the airframe at our auction last year for $150. I used some old Robart air retracts I had in "the drawer" and a dropped maybe a couple of hundred for decent servos. I did pick up a Platt spinner and added my own finishing touches. I am surprised with the engine. So far I've got about a dozen flights and it's just starting to break in. Three bucks a gallon for fuel sure beats the hell out of $20+ per gal. for glow fuel. She's a real smooth flyer and with all the flaps, will three point at a crawl. Too much fun!
Here's a few pics.

Ram-bro,
I'll bet those words tasted like vinegar coming out!. I do appreciate the comments. The weathering is my favorite part of the build. All I did to this model was add the yellow trim and spend an hour or two on it with the airbrush. Probably the most fun is fishing around the internet for vids/pics of the BF109 while waiting for the paint to dry...ya gotta love this hobby!!

That is hardly a "cheap knockaround Warbird". You have to account for your time, which in this case is considerable. A cheap knock around warbird would be a third (4th, 5th) hand top flite picked up at an auction that has been repeatedly crashed and repaired, covered (and re-covered) with monocote and is fuel soaked. Oh and by the way, it has to look like hell if you hadn't already guessed. I've sure had a few.

Vinegar would be sweeter than what I had in mind. I love the finishing , detailing and airbrusshing part of the hobby. It can take a good looking plane and make it a whole new creation. The dirtier and uglier....the better. Now I gotta change my name since I complimented n ARF

Built but never flown 88" Pica Spitfire with Spring Air retracts, servos, and new ST 4500. Stole from swap meet for $200. Sold ST4500 for $100 and bought used 4.2 Sachs off RCU for $150. Needed $12 carb kit. Runs good now. Had an extra radio and receiver. Added a little weathering and detail. $262 pretty cheap for a good flying knock around gas warbird. Paul

That's what I'm talking about! And that's not even an ARF.
As far as time spent goes, the most involved process was installing a new firewall for the rear carb, stand-off mounted engine. Everything else was easy and enjoyable.
Ram-bro, you crack me up!!

got given a Mick Reeves 80" Hurricane, gone in on its nose, needed everything from the wing L.E.forward,got all the missing parts from the designer, matched the excellant paint job, new cowl, total cost? £22 parts, £8 cowl, £3 humbrol paints,about$46 flew the thing for years before it dropped a retract on a windy day, and rolled in,
