RE: ROAD TRIPS 2012
Sam:
Is that a Petromat runway/Taxiway at NAMFI?
How do they like it?
Maybe talk to some of the guys from that club next week at Muncie!
We are going to put that down at our field.
Nice pics.
See you next week at Muncie!

RE: ROAD TRIPS 2012
Roger, the SMMAC field (NAMFI) runway is a mat from a paper mill that is used to dry out the paper. They can only use it so often, then they must dispose of it. That's where it came from. So it actually is not petromat, which I believe is an asphalt filled woven fabric. However, we do like it and it has held up well. It just takes a lot of preparation and planning to keep water from trenching and rutting it out under the mat. We have thick black plastic underneather it so that the water runs out instead of trenching. We have pulled it up once in about 10 years to clean up some trenching that will always occur. I would assume that pertomat would need the same preparations before laying it down.

Ziroli P-38.
The twin clipped off the C-47's nose.
Twin: only the wing tips are damaged.
C-47: only the nose was cut off. Even the props were not hit.
The twin was taking off and went into the pits, hitting only the C-47.
I can't even imagine how the minimal and unusual damage occurred.
A few full size airplanes.
The 163 previously shown in videos.

Americana:
Some huge cargo that, once was exclusive to the railroads, is now handled by trucks (appears to be 36 wheels for one trailer).
I believe this is the bridge over the Mississippi (I passed over several rivers).
It's pretty flat in Iowa!
Two semi circles form the barn roof that appears to be indigenous to Minnesota.
Time will tell if these giant wind mill turbines are profitable!
Later, I'll load FDL flyin.

RE: ROAD TRIPS 2012
Aug 16-18, Warbirds and classics over the midwest at Fond du lac, Wisconsin.
280 miles from Owatonna, Minnesota (round robin trip).
I left Owatonna, Monday morning and arrived at Fond du lac in the afternoon.
An all grass field (grass is cut to 1/2"), a quarter mile long and 300' wide.
Coming here is like going to church: a very nice group of people who makes everyone feel welcome.
As with Owatonna, about 150 pilots showed up with an estimated 400 planes.
The entire 1/4 mile had 'pop ups' and planes.
I tried to take pictures just of those planes not at Owatonna.

Mac put on a great show with his B-29.
Interesting: seeing this F4U, I don't remember seeing any at Owatonna!
