Wing Bolts?

RE: Wing Bolts?
Hi Tony,
I'm still using nylon bolts on everything. Typically 1/4-20 bolts. If you're using the stock YA bolts they are actually a little beefer than 1/4-20 bolts. They are 5/16-18 bolts. I'll be getting my YA zero ready to go this month. I'm thinking I may do the maiden at Bridgewater vs Woodstock. I think Bridgewater may be more forgiving in case of an emergency.

Long time ago when the earth was still green we used to simmer all our nylon props in water with a little Rit dye mixed in to restore the water content and match the airframe. Seems dried out nylon gets brittle. Just sayen'

From my experence about one of the few things that survive the crash are the nylon bolts that are most of the time still bolted to the blocks that are ripped out of the fuselage. Small planes I use SMALLER nylon ones but the big IMAA ones I use steel. My opinion , Max H.

Logic tells me that if the frangible bolts survived than they were too strong for the purpose. I also have had that happen so for the smaller birds I have switched to magnets, although I have to admit that does make me a bit nervous.

Thanks for all the help. Nylon bolts it is.
Carl, I am not sure if the bolts I have are from Yellow or not. Mine has metal blind nuts installed and I am pretty sure they are 1/4-20. I think my test flight will be at Woodstock. Jesse will be doing the test flight so it will be at his field of choice. All I have to do is balance mine and it will be ready to go.
Thanks,
Tony

RE: Wing Bolts?
Mama always told me I was different!
I guess ya'll proved it. I use, and always have used, metal bolts on all my 50cc and bigger gas models. I figure with the side loads imposed by long legged retracts on these beasts coupled with 30lbs or more on most of them that nylon heads would be popping off left and right if I staid with that method. As to vibrating loose, that has happened to one bolt in 10+ years so it has not really been an issue for me. I do tend to stick with metal bolts tapped into cherry or oak hardwood blocks and try to avoid blind nuts all the time.
To each his own I guess.

There is a method to make your nylon bolts shear as they are supposed to. Cut through them say 30-40 percent and then insert them.
The tensile strengh for a nylon 1/4-20 bolt is about 300lbs and shear is about 400lbs.

Hi Tony,
I like the 1/4 -20 X 2" NYLON Wing Bolts
Put each one into a Pencil Sharpener and you won't have a problem tring to find that Blind Hole.

Good luck with the maiden. I remember when I used to do all test flights for everybody. Tough when you don't trust your eyes anymore.

I would not use nylon bolts with blindnuts or in a siutation where you have 4 bolts w/out dowels or rear dowels and front bolts(ala TF P-51 kit). If I have front dowels, then nylon is no problem as long as it is going into thread wood.
Personally I use nylon on sub 15-17 pound planes and metal on larger than that.
