SCALE P51 REPLACEMENT TIRE QUESTION!! WHAT BRAND??
I have a 1/5th Top Flight P51 that came with Sierra scale retracts, struts and ( don't know brand 10 spoke alum wheels)..
I want to replace the tires but don't know what brand they are. The tire is 4 3/4 tall and the wheel splits in half. Not robart since they don't make a 4 3/4 tire and the rim bolt pattern is different.
Any of you warbird gurus know what brand these are??
Thanks

RE: SCALE P51 REPLACEMENT TIRE QUESTION!! WHAT BRAND??
I'm thinking aerotech. They have 6 bolts holding the halves vs my 5.. The rim pattern looks right though. The tire is a bit larger than 4 1/2 inch and the aerotech tire is 4 7/8. I might have an older version aerotech?

Doug they look just like mine, mine are aerotech ...but I think they may be the same as Robart.
I flew my GS P-51 this weekend and I'm having the same issue as you ( I think) roll out looks perfect...then when the plane is almost stopped it goes all goofy and I can control it at all.
I did raise the flaps right when the wheels touched and after the tail setteled I pulled full ele. to lock the tail down and that helps some...
but my bud has the same plane with dubro wheels and has none of these issues... I love the rims... but It's not worth it to me. They also spin to well and make the roll out long.
I'm going to order Dubro 4 3/4 treaded light wheels and paint the rim aluminum and call it good... not worth the ground handling issues
This has been a known issue with these wheels for years

RE: SCALE P51 REPLACEMENT TIRE QUESTION!! WHAT BRAND??
5 inch won't fit in the well on my bird. I'm sure they are the aerotech tires. I solved the ground looping issue by reducing a bit of the full flap setting. Straight as a arrow every time. Rims and wheels not an issue. I just want new tires because the current ones are beat.

I see.... I'm still having issues
I just ordered the dubro 4.5 wheels and will try those out
I will try less flap also, I hate flipping the flaps up while I'm rolling...
maybe you can mod the 4.5 dubro wheels to fit your rim..... or contact Robart I think they are the same tire: http://www.robart.com/store/wheels/a...s-4-6/5-wheels
Call Robart because when I bought my aerotech wheels they call the 5" but there 4 3/4 so check the dia. with them

RE: SCALE P51 REPLACEMENT TIRE QUESTION!! WHAT BRAND??
I use aerotech wheels and tires on my P51, have had them on for about 6 years, forget how many flights but never have an issue with them and never ground loops.
Yes then freely but I like that, I land at scaleish speed and it looks nice running on its mains till the tail settles, rudder is worked hard keeping it straight, same as the full size. I do have a high speed, high torque servo on rudder with quite large throws.

That's good to know...do you fly off asphalt? that's what I fly off
It rolls out nice and straight no issue, the tail settles and looks good.... when it's just about ready to stop the plane gets squirly and I have to fight it
Doug was having the same issue and it may be to much flap..... I pulled my flaps up the last two flights right when the wheels touched down and that seemed to help.
I'll mess with the flaps somemore and see where that goes....
I have heard the aerotech wheels work well on grass but not asphalt so I would be interested to see what you fly off
just want to get it sorted out and not damaged anything

Ron,
If you have a seperate servo for the tail wheel steering I would suggest making the servo travel minimal. Many perhaps most WWII fighters have a tail wheel lock that allows just a bit of movement while taking off and landing. Other wise they become uncontroable. Just a thought.

RE: SCALE P51 REPLACEMENT TIRE QUESTION!! WHAT BRAND??
I did do that Bob.... but maybe I can lower the travel even more on the tail wheel.
It will turn around on the runway maybe about a 25 ft turn radius... and I have expo on it and the rudder.
Thanks for the help, will get this puppy sorted out ( I hope )
It flies so nice, I just need to get the last part of the landing roll out under control
I have a set of new wheels coming just to try (4.5 dubro thread lite) I'll give them a shot.... if they work well I will put them on the aerotech rims after.
So I'm doing less flap, less tail wheel throw, and new wheels.... hold full ele the last part of roll out to pin the tail.
I'll also double check for pull pull slop (which I did last time) and the the tail wheel setup feels tight

RE: SCALE P51 REPLACEMENT TIRE QUESTION!! WHAT BRAND??
Hey Doug,
Just wanted to let you know the Dubro 4.5 treaded lite wheels worked out good.
I pulled them off there stock plastic rims, laid the aluminum wheels on the tire and got it centered.... marked it with a fine tip sharpie
I then scored a line about an 1/8 inside the pen line with an x acto knife.... then carefully cut the tires out on my scroll saw.
They were a nice snug fit on the rims... after I put the two piece rims together I glued the tires with thin CA to the rim.
Seems to work good, I'll let you know how the work at the field
I can't load pictures right now, RCU is messing up... I will try later

I think they're actually a set of Sierra wheels. I have a pair that look just like that. I got them about five years ago. Darrell made the mold for the tires and had DuBro cast them. They are a tad smaller than 5". He had to order a minimum amount, which turned out to be quite a few. He probably still has some left. I'd give him a call.

Aerotech does not have a website anymore. They were bought out and are done. I have heard that sierra's are the same wheel or very close to it.

RE: SCALE P51 REPLACEMENT TIRE QUESTION!! WHAT BRAND??
Are you using the same servo for rudder as tail wheel,, or seperate servo to steer ?
Most people have maximum steering so they can taxi,
Once the tail comes up on take off, rudder takes over.
On landing your going pretty fast and your tail wheel is probably
Making your airplane get all squirrelly.
Try a low rate for tale wheel when landing, if you have a radio
That will let you program it,,, or mix it with the flap down switch,,
