NW Indiana Warbird Day: Sat, July 21 2012, BEST Warbird Event within 100 miles!
Sorry guys, I've been 'slacking'/ getting this out a little later than usual. It's like they say: 'retired life keeps you pretty busy'.
ANYHOW, This is THE EVENT that I try to make it too every year, the best warbird event with 2 hrs drive of my home near Kalamazoo, MI. Turnouts are usually quite large, ALL warbirds allowed: big, small, gas powered, electric powered, and everything in between.
About 10 miles SE of Gary, Indiana, the Midwest Sundowners have a VERY long and wide, well maintained grass runway, surrounded by open farmland (no obstacles).
They have very a very knowledgable staff, put on a EXCELLENT full course lunch, even includes beverages and deserts (for donation: YOU choose price), and since they have been doing this for YEARS, no wait: DECADES, they run a very professional event.
Landing fees? We don't need no stinkin' landing fees, why should we charge YOU to bring your beautiful warbirds to our flying site? Ditto on parking fees. In fact, there are NO fees of any kind. You only pay for your lunch, and only if you want it, and only as much as you want to pay.

All is well, Tom. It was a very busy week, relatives from out of town staying with us, capped off by 15 cu yds of top soil delivered to my back yard Fri. morning (to cover new septic tank).
Spent 4 hrs in the hot sun on Fri, shoveling it to spread it around (didn't finish the job tho), and frankly: was just too beat and worn out to think about packing planes and driving 2 hrs Sat morning to get to Wheeler.
Finished spreading the dirt today, seeded, watered, and ready to spend some time in air conditioned house.
I'm sure next year will work out better for me, sorry I missed it this year.

By the way we have a new pavilion and a control tower. The pavilion is steel and a concrete pad[40'] long and the control tower is about ten feet off the ground. The pavilion is big enough to put all the cooking trays and food out of the weather with room to sit.
I was drained dry by the time I got home.No bad landings or take-offs so it was worth it.We will be having a giant bird fly-in in September.
