I checked the G59 conversion site...wow. Learn something new everyday...I think it will take them a lot longer then your Macchi !!!
Unfortunately most modelers and RC warbird fliers think the only thing FIAT ever built was a 500 !

My customer may not be willing to take that bet at this point! However, after a series of starts and stops due to unforseen circumstances I think I will be able to commit more to the Macchi build starting now. (I'm working on it as we speak in fact!) I think I may even go ahead and finally start a dedicated build thread on the thing!
Regarding the Fiat, while the G.55 is my favorite I also have a fondness for the G.50. Even got one of those about half designed, although it is a simplified sport scale design. Some day....

I also really like the Re.2005, even though I can see where it is a love it or hate it design. It has huge flying surfaces, although the Spitfire-style gear that are barely wider than a P-40's is definitely a drawback.
http://vimeo.com/18295331 But first, I'm looking forward to seeing Chad's completed C.202 project (and Lazun's, too). And I'd defintely be interested in a fiberglass fuselage when we get there.

Hi Guys,
I've been reading and lurking in this great thread and thought I'd chime in with some other Macchi / Fiat Info. Forgive me, I've not trying to hijack but I think you'll enjoy some options on a little smaller scale.
I have been working on a Fiat G55. That is to say watching a good friend modify a Fiat G55 kit for me to get it to a point I can take over and finish the build. Curt has resources I don't to correct the errors on the kit and go beyond so I can start my parts.
I'll link the photos below of my kit.
As you guys have discussed the Fiat has a flat center section of the wing with the outer panels raised. The kit I have had traditional dihedral and was cut to have over-sized sport plane ailerons and no flaps. The wing shape is correct and the kit comes with the wings pre sheeted in Obeechi(sp?) but still in two half's. So Curt cut the outer sections free, glued them back with correct dihedral, cut and reglued the sport ailerons then cut and built scale aileron and split flaps in both sections. He built a scale horizontal stab, elevator and rudder. Then mounted the wings, stab, and rudder so that all the incidences are correct in relation to each other. Finally he created servo pockets and routing for me in the foam wings..... Whew...... I bought him a plane for his efforts and didn't bug him so he worked on it over about a year and a half or more as he had free time and want to play with it.
I now have a really cool kit that is not really an arf but much further along than I could have gotten it to do the kit justice as the unique model it is.....
As Curt was working on it I looked over and over at engines and really didn't want to go electric even though the nose would suit it perfectly. I wanted this model to be a stepping stone for me to learn some new techniques and assemble it like you would a SiSt FW-190 D9 which is were I'd like to end up in a year or two.... With the cool sounds of high end planes like the SiSt 190's with Laser 300v's or CARF Spitfires powered by Kolm engines i decided to do a little brother to those planes and ordered a Saito 100Ti inline Twin. Not as much power as a Laser but that sound !!!! I found a 100Ti and it's sitting in my office waiting for the plane to be ready.
So that's the story about my build. The plane is 60 sized and still kitted and sold in Germany as a Topp Rippin Fiat G55.
I have a build thread here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1359588 that details the shipping experience and the build so far, slow as it's been.
Even though I write about the shipping I would still get more kits from Topp Rippin as they were very good to work with and the shipping is just one of those things that happens sometimes. Not their fault. They were great. Their Pitts is a awesome kit.
As I understand it Topp Rippin is German's oldest fiberglass kit producer. They mainly do sailplanes but they do have some very cool offerings.

Here's the one video I've found of the Topp-Rippin G55.

and here is a video of the Saito 100Ti in a Chipmunk which is slightly larger than my Fiat and I'm hoping around the same weight.
Love that sound !!

If you'd rather have the Macchi then you could work with these guys on shipping and get a kit over here somehow. I know of one that went to Canada but I have no idea what the shipping cost.
They have a 60 sized Reggiane 2005and a 35cc sized Macchi.

One last note, if you'd like an "Easytiger" Macchi you can get the same line of aircraft from TexasRC.com and I have been very happy with them. The kits are made by CYModel. I have both the 60 sized DR1 and the ME-163 by CYModel and TexasRC was great to work with getting them to me.
Here are the photos of my Fiat G55 as it sits now after its rework by Curt. Thanks Curt !!!
Keep up the great work. I'm really enjoying this thread !!

Not much visual progress John but I am pushing to get all the internals finished so I can get the fuselage planked/sheeted. That will be a hurdle I will be glad to get over! More pics when I have something of interest to show.

Thanks for your kind words fokke, much appreciated. I have been following your Spitfire progress and it looks great. I will do a 1/4 scale Spitfire in the future as well but mine will be an early version, probably a Mk.I / Mk.II.

My next 1/4 scale design will be the Mk.I / Mk.II Spitfire but I have to get the Macchi finished before I can really even consider getting serious about designing the Spit. The Spitfire has been on my "to do" list for a very long time and is one of those models that I MUST do before I die!

Progress has been slow for numerous reasons, not the least of which because everything about this airplane is custom and it's rather more complex than it might first appear. However, I have the tail feathers now finished and ready to glass and am working on getting the rudder and elevator servos installed and all control runs made so I can close up the fuselage. I've also finished the design work on the scale tail wheel unit as I will need to get it built and installed as well. All control actuation will be kept completely concealed and despite the size of the airplane I'm rapidly running out of room in the tail end.

Thanks for the replies gents, much appreciated. I have put up a dedicated build thread at RCSB for anyone interested.
http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...155&PN=1&TPN=1
Happy to provide plans when they are ready John and hope to have a substantial number of fiberglass and/or vacuum formed accessories as well. Keep an eye here or on the RCSB thread for any updates.

I have not personally spoken with Darrell about providing the gear but it is not a one-off. The retract units themselves are the same as those used by Ed Newman and Frank Tiano (and I think some others) on the 104" span Macchi 200 that Ed designed and competed with at Top Gun. The struts are also the same as the 200, just slightly enlarged for the 115" span of the Macchi 202. I know he provided a second set of the enlarged gear to another builder as well. So it's not really a catalog item for him but it's not really a one-off either, somewhere in between. But now that he has produced at least half a dozen sets I'm pretty sure he would be open to producing more if the demand is there.

Chad,
Just to clarify, Ed didn't design the Macchi 200 that he built. I was the builder for 2 Macchi C.200 for Frank (one was sold to a another customer) and the design originally is from an Italian guy on a smaller (83") C.200 that was featured in two issues of MAN. Frank and Ed enlarged this plans and worked on the fiberglass parts for their models. They got a deal with Darrell and that is how they put the project together.
Actually when Ed was building his Macchi I was also building Frank's and we were sharing info during construction back in 2009. The difference is that Ed's wing was built-up and Franks were foam on both planes.
